Is anyone else's child on Focalin XR? My 6 year old son is on Focalin XR (20mg)in the morning and lately the last few days it seems like he has been having some weird side effects. He has been talking alot and very fast like he is nervous. He has been on this medicine for a while now but it seems like he can't get his thoughts and words out and he is constantly moving some part of his body. I am going to the doctor on Dec.20 and will be talking to him about it but wanted to know if anyone else has noticed any weird side effects from this medicine.

Hi, My 7 yr old daughter is on focalin xr 15mg. The good side effects are that she can focus and is quite compliant for about 6 hours. The bad side effects are loss of appetite, weight loss, moodiness, stomache aches, and a hard time going to sleep at night. As you can see, the bad are out weighing the good at this point. When we first started the medication we were excited, but when the drug is wearing off the rebound effect seems to magnify her problems with hyperactivity and behavior problems. Good luck to you. I hope I have been helpful to you

My son has started focalin just a few days ago and he has been walking in circles talking non stop! It's like he goes through a weird manic phase. I'm going to talk to his doctor tomorrow.

I tried to call the doctor about his side effects and the receptionist actually told me that the doctor doesn't talk to the patients/parents. I had to talk to the nurse who takes care of the medications and she told me the reason that he doesn't talk to the patients/parents is because there are over 500 kids in their facility/group and he is only there for 2 days a week so he doesn't have time. I asked her what to do about his side effects and she asked the doctor and then he said that I should take him completely off the meds for a week and see how his behavior is for the week and then if the behaviors begin again then we will figure out what to do. I cannot take him completely off the medicine because that makes him worse. I would rather put up with the constant talking and picking at his clothes and non stop movement all day if it takes his bad behaviors away. He has alot of problems sleeping too so I started giving him Melatonin at night to help him sleep and he has been staying in bed all night. Maybe you should try the melatonin to get your daughter to sleep at night. I would be lost if he still didn't sleep all night because when he doesn't sleep I don't sleep. When his medication is wearing off we suffer the same rebound effects which are horrible and I can't wait to get him to bed.
I am looking for another doctor who will actually be willing to talk to me and listen to me when I have a concern over my son. He is going through enough he just had kidney surgery and is home until he goes through the 2nd surgery so I have him all day now because he is not in school. The only time I get a break is when one of his wraparound workers or his tutor's come and that is not long enough. I am so exhausted
Thanks for the advise

My 6 year old stepson is on Focalin XR (10 mg). He has only been on it for one week, but he has been on every end of the spectrum. The first two days, he was a zombie. More recently he has been agressive, primarily to me. He has kidney punched me, head-butted me and also leaped from the shower to bite me. He goes back to the Dr. on December 30th. I hope they will change the dosage, or at the least, change the medicine.
