its all trial and error every child is different and reacts different to meds, sorry your son has experienced extreme side effects , but most times these meds are helping our children so i worry if you sue than more doctors are going to back off and from help our kids dont get me wrong its not fair that some kids get worse while on meds i have the deepest simpathy but i feel a law suite is not going to help but hinder. i wander if trying to advocate and raise money for more research and use of mri and testing tools will be a better solution. truly this field could use a buste in finding better alternatives for our children. hope i ws helpful

I just took my six year old off this drug. 2 weeks now and he seems worse than ever. He was on it for about a year for adhd and agressive behavior (BOY-LIKE) Now he is just plain nasty. I am hoping that he just needs to detox and flush it out and he'll be back to my son again.

Can anyone tell me any long-term effects of Respidal? My 6 yr. old son has been on it for about 8 months & is doing great! No side effects at all, (other than when it wears off he falls apart emotionally). He rage & outbursts are gone, but I am very concerned about long-term effects. I am not comfortable giving any drug 2x daily for any amount of long-term use. There has to be an alternative...

Although it doesnt work all the time because i have found jar a peanut butter and a spoon underneath his pillow lol. good luck

I have a 12yr severely autistic/ aspergers daughter.. Risperidone has worked exceptionally well for our daughter for seven years now and continues to enable her to be highly educated, capable and an essentially thriving young lady.. We have watched and weighed up the benefits of Risperidal to our daughter and the benefits far outweigh any side effects ( being almost nil side effects in her case). Risperidal combined with a dedicated home-schooling system and music therapy/ tuition has enabled our daughter to go from an iliterate, low functioning child to a very high functioning and capable person in her own right.
It could be that the dose was too high to start with and it could be that he was inappropriately diagnosed but our experience with Risperidal has been nothing but beneficial to our daughter.

After seven years on Risperidal we have only seen good things and benefits for our 12 yr old daughter.. It appears the longer we have stuck with this amazing medication and combined it with programs designed to meet her individual needs(ie music, education, continuity and consistant rules) the better our daughter does.. After seven years of gradual increase of the Risperidal (in conjunction with her paediatrician/ autistic specialists) the better she is.. My advice to those just startting out is to stick with it.. It is an amazing medication if applied correctly and if the dosage is gradually increased very slowly.. Our daughter started on a very low dose at age five and is currently 12yr and is on 1.5mg twice daily.. Stick with it its a good thing if used appropriately. We have had a significant decrease in anxiety, aggitation and self-harming behaviors to a point after seven years these behaviors are almost non existant.. This is not to say that Risperidal is for every child but it has worked exceptionally well for our girl..

Dear Jade
Give Risperidal a chance it is not an over night fix to any behavioral problems on an immediate basis but believe me after seven years and a lot of dedication and gradual slow increases each time our girl grew a bit more we have now total faith in Risperidal for use in children with autistic related unusual behaviors, agression, aggitation and self harm.. We were forced to try Risperidal as our daughter nearly took her own life with an elastic band around her neck at a young age.. Seven years on we would not change our decision.. Have faith in what ever works.. Have faith that not all didtrust this medication and that there are others out here who have lived the success of Risperidal over along period of time - seven years now..

Hey i tottaly agree. My son is now 6 years old and was diagnosed with adhd since he was 2. I was against the medication thing but my mom insisted that we do have him on meds. He was first put on focalin but after a while didnt work. he didnt sleep at all so they put him on risperdal in june of 06 by the beggining of Jan. he was hopitalized for 4 days cuz he had slept for 3 days striaght. Theres was nothing you can do to get him awake neither. That was the scariest time in my life. i didnt do anything but stop ALL the meds he was on. From there it has been living hell cuz he couldnt finish school cuz of his behavior and he is just out of control cuz no one wants to take the time to deal with him. If i were you i would get them for malpractice cuz kids shouldnt have to go through that at a young age. I didnt do anything about it and i wished i did. They need to get rid of that medicine and other meds that do that. Meds are sometimes just a get away and the kids will eventually DEPEND on HAVING to take meds. Please think about whats right for your child and other children.

my 11 year old son was put on this drug for ODD and it done no good at all in fact it made things worse as he got very anxious about everything and was a nervous wreck i stopped it myself and am still arguing with his pyscologist about it as she is insisting on putting him back on it yet when i brought him to a private doctor he said my son shouldn't be on it i agree that it is poison.

Do any of you have a child on Respidal that is gifted? My 6 yr old's IQ is 155 and I am wondering if he really has bipolar symptoms or if these behaviors stem from being very intellectual and bored. I seems that all of you have other symptoms as well (ex asperger,autistic...). The symptoms, however are a lot better on the drug.

My son just turned 7 and has been on Risperdal and the Daytrana patch for 2 years. He is diagnosed with ADHD, explosive intermittant behavior, and oppositional defiant disorder. We tried all the other meds and this combo seemed to have the least negative side effects. His behavior is usually normal until he becomes frustrated processing information to complete a task; especially if its a competitive environment such as a classroom group setting. He is gifted intellectually and reads as well as a grown-up. His hand-eye coordination is very underdeveloped though. Some days are perfect at school and others he has to be removed from the class for violent outbursts. He is on 1.5 mg Risperdal and 10mg Daytrana. He has been placed in special ed under emotionally disturbed and as harsh as this sounds he is actually protected federally to receive a public education regardless of his disability. My personal opinion would be unfair to sue a doctor for prescribing a medication that has worked so well for many others and that parents seek out support groups to discuss alternative therapies and meds to find the right solution that works for you and your family.

My son has been on Risperdal for almost a year. The main side effect of excessive weight gain. We tried another drug but it seemed to make him more aggressive. So we went back on Risperdal with a morning dose of Focalin to help curve his appetite. He takes 2mL at night. He is so much better on the Risperdal but evidently not where he should be. He started Kindergarten last Monday. On Wednesday, they had to clear his classroom and physically restrain him. On Thursday the school called at 9:30 for us to pick him up. Does anyone know how to get the special ed process going so that he will be protected under 504?

Sandy...my son was exactly the same in Kindergarden. Violent agressive outbursts, flipped desks over, threw school supplies and even breaking them. When school administrators tried to restrain him, my child would spit, bite and kick. He even spoke obscene language. We decided to change doctors and meds. Focalin was his previous adhd med and we switched to a 10 mg Daytrana patch. He started calming down and making progress. I did go to school with him and work side by side with him as a play therapist. After he was suspended with numerous referrals the process began and he is now in 2nd grade under the 504 as ED and has a daily behavior chart with goals and rewards. Also he has 2 hours of aid assistance who come in during the morning and after lunch. These times were indicated as problematic times for aggression thru his charts. He also can make choices to work on the computer when writing agitates him. The journey to this point was long, hard and very lonely. I cried everyday because I knew I would have to take care of him for the rest of my life and that he was different from my other 2 sons who are 23 and 18. The school did psychological testing and showed IQ of 130; however processing information was his slowest ability. He still shows signs of aggression but has not been physically restrained since 1st grade. He has made progress communicating and can almost calm himself down after an episode. Yes he is labeled, but he is still in a normal classroom setting and that is our ultimate goal. Good luck with your child.

I think it depends upon the individual. My 11 year old daughter has had something wrong with her as long as I can remember (mentally). I've tried and tried to get her help and psychotherapy alone wasn't doing it. She was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and severe anxiety. Medication was a last resort and she started with depakote. That wasn't enough and started risperdal. I finally have a child that can function in daily life for the most part. She is happy and can rationalize now. I can't tell you the positive effects on her mood disorder the medication has had. But, like I said, I think it depends on the individual and what their body responds too.
This has been 8 years of doctor after doctor trying to figure out what is wrong and trying everything BUT medication.
If you knew me, you'd know I'm not a strong supporter of the drug companies or a big believer in medications being a fixall. However, in some cases they are needed and some cases they work. Unfortunately, not everything works the same for everyone. If one thing doesn't work, keep searching for what does. Good luck with your children and keep loving them through their hard times. Never stop searching for the help they need and the right doctors to help them. It's taken 8 years and scores of doctors to find the answer for my daughter. I wish you all well

My son is 5 years old. He took 1 mg of Risperdahl for almost 2 years. You definetly have to slowly take them off. I did this last May. I went from 1 mg, to 3/4 mg the next week, to .5 the next, to .25 the next week and so forth. He was TERRIBLE in June, a brand new kid in July, but then started getting really violent again in Aug. He is now back on the meds in order to adjust to Kindergarden. I don't want him on them either, but I really don't know what else to do. He was diagnosed as PDD/NOS, mainly asperger's, but his meltdowns are brutal when he is not on them.

My 4 yr old son has been diagnosed with Aspergers - High Funtioning Autism. He has been had horrible tantrums, bites, kicks and throws things. He screams too. He has been asked to leave two school and made to leave another. My husband and I both have to work full time and are stuck what to do next. We are attempting to get a "shadow" from the state, but chances are not looking good. His nuerologist want to put him on Risperdal. I have been again meds, but don;t know what to do anymore. Is 4 too young to start? He needs to get his moods under control or one of us would be forced to quit a job and have to move out of state in order to live with one income. We don;t know what to do anymore.

is risperdal anything like ritalin?

Name: Natalie | Date: Oct 26th, 2007 11:45 AM
Respidal is NOTHING like ritalin. Ritalin is a stimulant and respidal is an antipsychotic. Like the last comment, I never believed in meds as a solution... until I was completely despirate. My son has tried stimulants, anti-anxiety meds and now respidal. I am not totally confident that i made the right decision by using meds, but my sons quality of life has definately improved. He is now able to function in school socially where he couldn't before. I am still researching ways to get off of it, but in the meantime, he is much happier.

Rebecca- after I commented last, I read a very interesting article in Parents magazine (the Nov. issue if you can get it). It talks about risperdal & ritalin. It says: "Ritalin is like candy compared to such drugs as Risperdal". The article is worth reading-very very eye-opening

I am new to this forum and was wondering there is anyone who had a child on Risperdal and then had an increase in glucose levels and cholesterol levels? If so, what did you do? Thanks : )

It has been recommended for my 15 year old son. idon't want it. What did it do to your son?

Name: Natalie | Date: Nov 15th, 2007 9:48 AM
My son is only 7, so I'm not sure about a teenager. His Dr says he is a very rare case, because he has no adverse side effects at all., not even weight gain- which the Dr says every patient on this drug has. What is has done is enable my son to control his temper & emotions. The constant arguing has lessoned, and his ability to communicate rationally has greatly improved. His confidence has also increased. Again, I can't stress enough that I am not an advocate for this drug... but the alternative was far worse for my son. I will never be confident in the decission to use meds, but until I find another solution i will have to live with it.
