| dear another mom when things go wrong they go wrong all at once, When your child goes through puberty and their behavior changes you sometimes have to act fast inorder to keep the child from having an even worse episode. I did not want to place my child on any drug but there was no choice. This was the option that was given at that time. Plus this is the only durg of choice that doctors give to the asd population ↑ |
| hi Natalie can I ask you something regarding the risperidol? When the doctor slowly weened your hild off of the medication did he place the child on another psychmed or did he place the child on vitamin protocol? I'm asking because I called the Lab co. that distributes the product and said that It is possible that the drug is just not agreeing with my son and quite possibly the dotor would have to ween the child off this drug and replace it with another psych med. And that is the only way a child can be taken off of risperidol. I just needed to know please respond and hope all is well ↑ |
HI Anom! At first the Dr. tried to add another drug before he whined him off- but no luck finding one that was beneficial. So then we just whined him off with nothing else. Its been about 5 weeks maybe that we are drug-free. He did develop what they called a "medication withdraw induced" motor tick, but it seems to have gone away now. The only vitamins I give him are: 500 mg of Vit C, a multi & 1000mg of amino fatty acids (fish oil). He has been on the regimin for about 3 years. I swear by the amino fatty acids... but they do take awhile to become effective.
What exactly is your son's DX? I thought you said autistic? but I'm not sure... ↑ |
| Hi Natalie, Thanks for responding No my son is autistic. I called the drug company because everytime the oral solution winds up with a quarter left in the bottle My son starts acting as though he is having a reaction as if he hasn't been reieving the medication at all. I am going to call the doctor tomorrow and if I do not get a response then I will have to look for another doctor who specializes in this area. The drug company told me that the drug could enhance any sensory problems and bring on anxiety and make them feel agitated. Also, she said that when a child comes off of this drug they get weened off it while being placed on another psych med. I was hoping that she was wrong. It seems the risperidol isn't doing what it should do except for his appetite. If he is overtired he gets cranky and a little bit on the aggressive side. In other words his sound sensitivity is being offset dued to the medication and suggested that the dr. take him off and maybe find another drug in its place. Now I feel like I'm walking on eggshells. My aim is to try and get him to do 2hrs. of cardio a day inorder to offset the problem with his senory system . Today he had a cycling class and then he went special olympic swimming after that we went jogging but the only thing the two of us could do was run for 2mins then walk fast for 3mins we repeated this action for a 1/4 of a mile. Tomorrow I will try the bowling again and from there go and jog for another 1/4 mile. If he doesn't want to go bowling then he will have to go and rollerblade. You know if the drug made him concentrate or even helped him with his talking I would have no problem in his having to take this drug.I'll let you know how it is working. Wish me luck .P.S. I placed him on a reward system I go through a list of what is not allowed and what is expected and from that he will earn a dollar a day at the end of the week he can decide how to spend it. ↑ |
| I've taken my son jogging 3x this week and his overall behavior has improved. There is still some behavior but not like before. Also I placed a reward system in place. He gets to earn a $1.00 a day for doing what he is suppose to do and if his behavior is unwarranted he loses a privilege as well. So, far so good. but I still can't get him to be able to do all that has to be done. Another thing I started is that I leave a plate out of cut veggies and fruit for him when he gets home from school.baby carrots cucumbers and lettuce. He seems to enjoy the crunch. Also I haven't had to give him any melatonin to fall asleep except for tonite. Hope everyone is well. I thinkI might try him on the gfcf diet again and see if I can get him to comply and maybe enjoy it. ↑ |
| Has anyone ever had concerns that the ADHD and Autism might of been caused by their childhood vaccines. I have been finding more and more parents wondering ↑ |
| I miscarried during the 1st trimester, However, I did a titer on the mmr and it came out pretty high. He had enough immunity from 5yrs of age to early adult hood. So, I've never given him another vaccine. I f they can't guarantee safety why should I put my child at any more risk. I am trying to get my son on dietfor gluten free and casien free .Wish me luck! ↑ |
| My 8 year old son is on risperdoal and strattera he is adhd and bi polar and I am so frustrated over it all. He's a little better but he still sneaks and takes things that aren't his and he couldn't tell you the truth if his life depended on it. He at times gets very angry and yells and he crys alot for no reason. Does this seem normal? or at least common? ↑ |
| What is wrong with you people???? QUIT DRUGGING YOUR KIDS!!!!!!!! Why don't you spend some time loving them & helping to correct or change their behavior WITHOUT poisoning them??????? ↑ |
| SANDY, just who do you think you are ! Don't you think we do that! We love our kids and medication is our last resort!! People like you make me so mad!!! ↑ |
Sandy you should consider yourself lucky that your child isn't having any problems other then being autistic or adhd. For many of us our kids have out of the blue developed aggressive behavior whethrt it be self inflicting or inflicked on others. When you have a child who has a problem coping and displeays aggressive behavior there are undelying causes and they have to be handled in an appropriate manner so these behaviors won't become problematic. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BEFORE YOU JUDGE. My son never had any aggressive problems until last spring he started latent puberty and had new teachers and therapists the teachers and therapist didn't help him to transition and caused the problems at present. Since then I've had to place my son on this drug and now I'm trying to take him off because of side effects. Also, my son has no choice but to adhere to nutritional changes with vitamin supplementation. It is very easy for you to judge. and say we are bad parents however I think you are very small minded . When someone needs help they should get it. The trouible is all the people who can help our children cost too much money with there consulting fees and there testing. And there aren't enough programs to help our children. The onlt reason people are starting to care now more then before is due the ever growing numbers. Do you realize our children and our childrens children will be taking care of our children when we are all gone. Our children will never get married or have a little job that they can work and have there own family. This is not funny. And on top of this the finacial world has entered such a bad period of recession that where will the funds come from to support there programs . And with the numbers of disabilities growing at such a fast rate I wonder if this is what the end of civilization will be. Now a days You have children growing up at alarming rates who suffer from depression commiting horrendous acts which we read about and see on the news. And the ever growing rates of disease such as hepatitus, and ever growing rate of autism. Now this disability is world wide. With all these ever growing manisfestations what will become of the world as we know it.
Sandy did you ever think that if someone ever realized the guy last year in virginia who went on a killing spree needed help and rec'd it that situation might never had taken place. And how about all the parents whose children commit suicide each year what about that. If those children were reached in time and rec'd what they needed then things would be different. At times medication can work But when it doesn't and you get side effects you have to rethink and start over. Just consider yourself lucky that you don't have any problems. And I think you owe everyone here an apology. I think you are on the wrong web page this pg is for parents whos' kids are on meds airing out and trying to have a solution to the problems our kids are having ↑ |
anom I couldn't have said it better myself, thank you! I am a mom of a nearly 6 year old autistic little girl, these past couple of weeks have been terrible for my husband and myself. My daughter has had aggression problems for about a year now at home and at school but lately this has got a lot worse, she never stops we think she may have adhd also because she is on the go all the time, we have to give her Abilify which is in the same category as Risperdal which she has been on before but we think now the Abilify is just not working, it was very hard for us to put her on medication and a last resort but when your child grabs you by the hair and scratches your face you hav no other choice! Yes every single day I look at my little angel and wish she would get better but I will do everything I can do for her.
We have a behavioral therapist coming in we take her to Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore she goes to a mainstream school but has to have an aid she gets P.T and O.T I get really mad with people when they make snied remarks about other peoples children when they are lucky enough not to have to medicate their kids. Again anom we just have to be strong for our kids and LOVE them just like we do all the time, have a great day! ↑ |
| HI mom of a beauty, I just started a getting rid of the gluten and he seems a little bit better. Also, I now go jogging with my son 3 days a week. This week was hard my sister was sick and my son was put off because he didn't get to go to six flags. But as far as your daughter you are lucky she is able to be mainstreamed;however I think you should make sure she isn't suffering from allergies or a drip and have her ears checked make sure they aren't infected or that there isn't any blockage. I haven't had any problems with blockage.,but I've heard of kids who acted out due to lodging toys inside their ear cannal. I don't know if you remember a few years bank a mother was on the news and had taken her child to a hospital for doubling over in pain only for doctors to find a foreign substance was lodged in his intestines. And the parent said the doctors said didn't your child complain and the mother said no but for the past 31/2months the child was having problems with agression . And the mother said ' she the doctors in the hospital said thats why - the child was being agressive because the child couldn't communicate what was going on. When my son's allergies act up the sound sensitivity is so bad he can't take any vibration let alone noise. Have it checked out. Meanwhile I have to call the dr. and tell him the company said the problem with the sound sensitivity and the trouble with his vision is a side effect and this drug isn't agreeing with him and to have them help you get him off. Also I found out the dosage that is subscribed has to be giving in small doses and increased over a period of time if not the patient can have side effects. This explains alot. I am still looking for a dr that specializes in this. Anyway just hang in there something has got to work. I've taken advive of only having fresh fruits and veggies around I think that has helped. Also try having your child keep busy either baking or painting or just playing outside. Maybe her sensory system is overloaded and she is not dealing with it.Good Luck and speak to you soon. Hey Natalie how is everything going?I have been going through the hospital directories on line and I am still looking for an altrenative dr. My friend found a doctor who will be adjusting his medication levels and suggested that maybe I should give him a call and get his opinion.I don't know if I want to keep him on meds. I'd like to take him off and see how he does.So far I don't want to jinx myself.Looking for a dan doctor who can help. Let you know. ↑ |
| Thanks for the reply anon. My daughter has started a lot with the arm movements thinking it is a side effect from Abilify also could be having some subclinical seizures going on Dr said to take her down one quarter immediately on the Abilify and then another quarter next Thursday which is when she is scheduled for an EEG at Kennedy Krieger then see what the results of that is. Do you live in Maryland? I was just wondering when you said six flags because there is a six flags 45 mins from me. momofabeauty. ↑ |
| HI MOM OF A BEAUTY No I live in Staten Island. Hope all is well with your little girl. I'll keep you in my prayers. Take care. P.S. there has to be another answer out there for our kids then these drugs. Sometimes I think other people look at our children and don't see what we see in our kids.Meanwhile I have still been trying the gfcf diet - he seems a little bit calmer and a little bit more responsive. tomorrow I have to call my son's dr and leave a messagefor him to cb regarding the medication &proceed to take him off slowly and see what happens then. The main problem with risperidol and ambilify they are not for irritability they are for people for have real manic disorders and for what I can tell there really isn't a drug for an autistic child or any child for regulating their feelings. Maybe they should try to teach them how to react as part of behavorial therapy. I have to go my son just fell asleep . goodnight ↑ |
| Has anyone tried Risperdal in combination with stimulant medication like ritalin or adderall? What were the results, was the combination effective? I've heard of stimulants having their effects blocked by antipsychotic medications like Risperdal, did anyone experience any of that? Thanks so much, I have a son who's desperate to have his receptive language disorder/working memory problems treated and any information on this medication combination would be so helpful. ↑ |
Hi Anom! I'm glad to hear things are going a little better for you both! Way to go on the Sandy thing. Simple-minded parents are the worst of all. ITs been what... maybe 6 weeks now & still med-free! The ticks have stopped. The Dr says tha they were withdrawls. His appetite has gotten back to normal now, too. When I enitially took hom off, we had tried to introduce a new drug first, but that didn't work out so well. We then stopped the new one, then the risperdal. Something I found questionable while reading one of your last blogs- why is he on the liquid version of respirdal? I've only heard the things your saying from parents whos kids take the liquid. My son, and a few other kids we have met take (took) the pill form & didn't seem to have that problem with the stregth towards the end of the bottle. I will also say this... I don't know if this is due to my son maturing since we started the drug or if it was the drug.... but his frustration & adjetation has gone way down since going off of it. His sensory problems, however, have elevated.
The glutein thing... before you kill yourself trying to stick to that diet, have his Dr to a test for glutein intollarence. Mine just had the test done recently. Its a simple blood test with accurate results. It will also give you the results of wheat products in general.
I'm so glad to hear from you... keep me updated! ↑ |
FRUSTRATED1190- Sorry, I forgot that I wanted to respond to your question. My son was 5 when the problems began, and yes, we tried the stimulants. 1st alone, then w/ the respirdal. Both were a huge disaster. He just can't have the stimulants. Rispirdal is an antipsychotic... a very serious drug. NOT THAT I AM IN ANY WAY MINIMIZING YOUR CHILD'S DIFFICULTIES... but it seems to me that the side effects would counter-act what your trying to combat.
DANI... please get a second opinion on his diagnosis. PLEASE. The reason I say this is because the 1st Dr we saw gave us the same dx, along w/ 1000 other ones. I've seen 3 more drs since the 1st one, all of them agree (including his therapist) that bipolar absolutely can not be diagnosed at this age. My son is almost 8 now as well, and we've been dealing w/this for almost 3 yrs. Everything you've described are symptoms my son has had. These same symptoms also follow suit for a million diagnisis. My point to all of this is just do your best to treat the symptoms not the diagnosis, and no matter what- remember you know far more than the Drs do. Whatever treatment you decide to try- follow your own heart, mind & gut instinct. Lastly, what you have described sounds totally normal. The reason things got a lot better in our house was because my husband & I had to learn to parent better. PERIOD. We forgave, excused & overlooked out of sympathy. The moment we stopped, things turned around. Things are not perfect by any means... but we had to learn the hard way that some of his behavior problems were not actually his, they were ours. The more strict & routine we become (and admitting that we needed to be was the hardest past) the better he does. NOT AT FIRST, but over time. Good luck. ↑ |
Mi Natalie , my son woke up with his eyes pussed and bloodshot this morning so I left him home and took him to the dr. The dr. of the group was surprised at the way he was being effected by the drug and said I was right to start to cut the dose. She couldn't believe how disphonic he's become. I also explained how when the bottle is down to the last qtr he has a reaction at times where he becomes scared for no reason (as well as it affecting his vision) and then he runs. However I didn't get to explain the effect on his sensory system but you can more or less see this in his reaction to sound. I hope you don't mind but I explained what you said about the liquid form. But she asked me if the diet was hwlping and I told her it was still to soon to tell but I have no choice at this point. It's sad because my son always had a good sense of humor and was always very independent. and now I have to take things a day at a time. A friend of mine recently placed her son on topomax and she thought by givimg her son meds that all of her son's problems would be solved. lol I had to tell her everything takes time and now you have to establish counseling as well as behavorial modification. And by all means I told her I don't know about this drug but if it is like the risperidol in any way don't expect for it to do miracles. but just hang in there because you don't have a choice.I think I am going to call wagner college and see if there is a pysch who specializes in autism and see if they can help. As far as your son doing well coming off the drug I have to say that I am very happy to hear all is well. This is something that can give all of us hope with our children as well.
Hi Mom of another beauty How you are and I hope all went well with your child's testing .
If I don't get to speak to anyone this week have a happy mothers day . ↑ |
Hi Anom! Your not going to believe this... my son has been in glasses for about 1.5 yrs now. His RX has changed 4x in 1 year. We went for an eye exam last week, in in amazement, she said that he NO LONGER NEEDS GLASSES! He went from coke-bottles to nothing, and do yu know why? NO MEDS. I can't believe it. I'm furious & thankful all at the same time. No one ever told me that a side effect was headaches & blurred vision. This explaines why the glasses were not helping & we had to keep changing RX's.
I hope your son is doing well... keep me updated! ↑ |
hi Natalie, I am glad to hear the good news re your son. So far this week my son has had no behaviors or outburst. I've lowered both the pm and the am doses. He seems better but the disphonic behavior is still there almost all the time. Mon and Tues. this week I was able to get my son to study for 21/2 hrs on both days. I didn't do anything yesterday because he has ot from his rsa for 1 hour on Wed. Today I haven't did anything with him yet but will work him for an hour after dinner. The driver to his Sat program said he screamed on the bus but calmed down quickly when the matron asked him to calm down. The other day at his school I realized that the school was using maintence men to help in handling the children. I find this kind of odd and it bothers me quite a bit. Do you think I should say something to the AP or the PTA? I,ve started making phone calls for a behavorialist in helping my son progress better mentally I'll let you know what happenswith this.
As far as the blurred vision that explains alot with my son also. I have noticed that at times my son seems very headachy and can look at me and have a problem in realizing it is me. I think an autistic child with blurred vision would get spooked by this happening. These drugs are very dangerous it is too bad no one knows how to help our children. I really think many dr.s don't know what to do withour children and the solution is a quick fix with alot of side effects. By the way I am still on the gfcf diet. My son has been getting a yen for pizza but he will have to suffer with steamed shrimp and chinese vegetables and brown rice. lol.
Natalie you really had a very good Mother's day. It's nice to know after all you've been through it went well. I am very hopeful for my son after all you've been through with your child. I am going to hang in there and and keep working him stay positive and in the end all will be well . Maybe not perfect but well.
You know what is funny - a week ago I had taken my son in for being sick and the dr's associate saw my son she was very concern and said he should come off the drug she didn't feel he was acting right from the drug. I told what you said about the liquid and what the company said. She told me to continue to do what I have been doing but very slowly and to be very careful.
I love my kids doctors but I feel my son should be monitored in coming off the drug on a weekly basis.
Dear mom of a beauty how did everything go with your child hope all is well ↑ |
| hi my 9 year old son was on many adhd meds which did nothing he was on risperdal for 19 days and i took him off due to side affects of drug its been 3 weeks now and he is still not the way he use to be its like he was asleep for a while on the drug it affected him really quick i want my son that enjoyed life back and he seems worse after all these meds any advise ↑ |
Hi evelyn,I had the same problem with my son lasy june07. My son started havingsevere tantrums out of nowhere and out of his character also my son had trouble sleeping through the niteso the dr. prescribed this drug and 3-6 mgs of melatonin he was on it now for only 3 days then his reg. pediatriacian of the group called me and said this is not like your son and maybe it was only something that maybe will never happen again so he said for me to stop giving the risperidol and only give as needed. Now I was pretty scared because I didn't know what to expect from my son. At the same time I stopped the drug I also decided to try MB12 against the dr.s better judgement the dan dr. told me not to listen to the last piece of advice but to leave it alone and give the mb12 along with it for now.In other words the advice was you either do the medicine or not this medicine cannot just be stopped. No matter how long the length of time. Anyway geting back to my son I gave him the MB12 for 8wks. and stopped the risperidol as my son's dr requested. But 2 wks latter he had a meltdown out of nowhere I think he got angry because I was talking to someon trying to get family support and he just freaked. We had to give him the medicine inorder for him to calm down. All of Ajuly and August I couldn't trust my son I didn't know what was going to happen next. In the end I had to place him on the med due to him having a reaction to the sudden stoppage. Now my son is having a reaction to blurred vision where he is having something unclear and then he runs as if he doesn't know you. Also he has always had a problem with sound sensitivity he always even at the beginning of his protocol of this medication would just cover his ears now it gets so unbearable he bangs ion things with aggressive anger. And the biggest problem I've had is that when my my son's bottle is down to a qtr left he can become aggressive at times;in other words the medication takes the reverse reaction. And my son who is semi verbal is now only say go there we see and ok., over and over again 24 - 7. Then when I get a new bottle he is a piece of bread again.
So I ask the dr. why this happens and the dr.s office tells me to ask the pharmacy the pharmacy say's they don't know and I should call the co. The company say's how do you know its due to how the drug is doing this at the qtr left well maybe I should send you all 7 bottles with the qtr left. The co. cust. serv. advised me to have the dr. take him off and find another drug. But she saID CHILDREN ON THIS DRUG CAN ALMOST NEVER COME OFF AND IF i DID'T WORK FAST THESE SIDE EFFECTS COULD BECOME PERMANENT. I have been trying to find a shrink that specializes in autism. Also I've put in for ABA again and I have him rec counseling 1 x each week. The counseling I can say has helped. Also when he does any banging I take away all of his game remotes and music cds. Also I've changed his diet He gets no wheat or dairy and no gluten the gluten part is hard since it is almost everything. Now I take him to the healthfood store once a week. Plus I've cut down his medication he seems much better. I have decided to call the nerologist and go back and have him assess him after all that has happened. Meanwhile he still can't take noise I've recd 2 complaints from his sat. program that he got loud the only thing I can think of is the noise component. Anyway evelyn you can't just stop this medication even in just 19 days even 1 day is one day too long. You know I found out this medication is recommended for persons 18 and over. If this is true then why are they giving it to our children.
evelyn try to change the childs diet I read somewhere that the diet changes help in curbing side effects to medication. I'm sorry to hear someone else is in the same boat but maybe the reason is so we can help each other. Good Luck P.S. If you can get your son counseling in school do so. especially since you might not be able to have him travel with you effectively for now. ↑ |
Anom- I'm really bothered for you & your son about the maintaince men issue! You absolutely should say something! Thats BS (and I'm wondering if its illegal). I'm absolutely furious about that! Only certain people can handle certain types of children WITHOUT CAUSING DAMAGE(emotional).
I will bet the headaches are from the drug. My son's were so severe that he would have to put his head down multiple times a day and cry.
As far as a Dr. monitoring your son goes during this process... good luck with that. I agree with you- and I felt the same way. Unfortunately, I have to schedule the appts 6 mo ahead of time to get in... and my son's Dr didn't think that it was "necessary".
Let me know how it goes... I'll say a prayer! ↑ |
| you are a bitch natalie ↑ |
| Hi natalie, to be honest I am not sure what position the two men have at the school. At times I see them either watching kids in the cafeteria waiting for the bus and sometimes I've seen ,at least one at each time , with group of other workmen supervising cleanup. I can't get crazy with this though, the school might have trained everyone in supervising and caring of behavorial modification, what I will do is ask. After everything the school has been trying to help in the problem and with the counseling I do see a remarkable difference in his behavior. Also, I am trying to be more consistent with my warnings and punishments. I do not think anyone goes into special ed with the promise of trying to hurt the children. My son's school is very small in size the numbers of children attending have grown enormously. That's sad. I just have to stay more on top of the school and my son. And if I let my imagination get to me and stress out I will never accomplish anything. Not to mention my son needs to learn better anger management still and he has to listen to the grown ups around him. I have decided to call his dr. and talk to him and have ckd out and then decide if I need to see the nerologist. However, I probably already know what the answer is. Inspite of this I am trying to find a aba specialist in getting him to generalize better and to help in his functiong better. I'll let you know I was already turned dpwn by 1 and I just contacted 2 more. I hope they email me back quickly one way or the other. My son is getting tired of his tired whereever he finds food he's just grabbing it. I might have to give him one day a week to have one in fraction food or get a cookbook and have him try the recipes. Let you know take care ↑ |
| Oh Natalie you know what seemed to really make a difference is FIJI water. From my understanding the water contains minerals that help in people with either mood ,digestive, heart, anxiety, and a whole list of things. If you want just try it. I know it sounds crazy but if the water in its natural state can help then it's worth a shot. ↑ |
| hi Natalie,my son came home and found some old halloween pretzels and snacked on them and now he just got a little crazy over a frozen pizza he thought we had. I told him I don't like the way the other food makes you. You know the diet goes make a difference. However he's starting to miss his old favorites. I am going to have to stock up on the substitute items. food isn't important.being able to function is.I told him to calm down or he will be grounded again and for a longer period of time. speak to you tomorrow.I am going to see if I can get him to go outside and jog the weather turned out to be really nice. ↑ |
1st of all... to the person who thinks I'm a bitch- How dare you assume that you even have the right to think you can call me anything. You clearly are not on this site for the right reasons- so stay off (pretty bitchy of me to say...huh?)
Anom- hi! I think I misunderstood the "maintence men" situation. I didn't know that you had seen them in other areas of the school. Your right, the best thing you can prob. do is just ask. I can't get over the food reactions. Its almost like he's having withdrawls,?
Have you been able to switch the form of his mesd yet to pills? I'm curious to see if that helps.
I'll try the water as well. Unfortunately, my son HATES to drink water. Its a constant battle.
Let me know how it goes w/the new Dr. ↑ |
| I think I'll call the practice and get hold of the dr. who originally prescribed the med and ask her. I don't know about the pill I thought the pill gave a reaction to children with seasonal allergies.Do you think the reaction is from a combination of reducing the dosage and the infraction? I have to see. Anyway how is your child doing? And for the person who something negative look in the mirror before you cast nasty remarks ↑ |
