Hi Anom! Sorry I haven't responded, but when it rains it poors! I hope you had a good vacation! I live about 2 hrs away from Orlando. How is your son? I'm assuming he has started this school year, right? (We start earlier than most states). Mine is having a much better year so far. He has an amazing teacher who had made all of the difference in the world!
Have you gotten into any med colleges? I know you were searching).
Well, I hope all is well, Natalie ↑ |
I did not realized ADHD could be so severe. My son is 5 and we are struggling greatly. He was ok for awhile on focalin and clonidine and then all hell broke loose when he started kindergarden. Now he is on risperdil because one of his main issues is aggression. HELP----someone tell me this will get better. I just want him to get through school and be happy in life. ↑
Well my son as te same teacher and staff. So far no complaints have come form school. No I haven't found any teacing colleges, except for nyu study center. I would have to call and ask if they specia;ize in autism. I really don't know what to do. However when he is in school that is when he hasalot of problems in handling his behaviors esp with his ability to control his anger. ↑
natalie we had a great time did alot of rides and saw 2 shows. we all had a ball. PS did I tell you he's seeing a Nutritionist and the nutritionist said he had hypoglycemia last year when all this started. His sugar was 42 when they took blood work. he said a person can go into rages and become uncontrollable. So now we are trying to get him to eat alot of protein. tell u more later ↑
Hi, this is my first time on a forum, My 5 1/2 year old has ADHD/ODD. he was diagnosed at 3y/o. He has been on 6 or 7 different med's., unfortunately the amphetamines don't work on him. He has been on 150mg wellbutrin and 1 mg. risperidol for over a year. This combination has been the only one to work, and when I say work, I mean about 75%. But that was enough to get him through pre-k @ Gramercy, Which we wish went up further in grade, but it doesn't. This is the best school for children with disabilities in nyc. ges 2-5, it's a part of YAI. Anyway, he has not been adjusting well to kindergarten. He went from a class of twelve to an inclusion/CTT class of twenty five. He has been having the kind of outbursts that he had at three, before the meds. We saw his ped. neuro/psych who put him on Serequel 100mg and stopped his risperidol. He also suggested that it was time for us to see a strictly pediatric psychiatrist. Does anyone know of a good one in nyc. and what do you think of the new combination. I can't see much of a difference on the serequel, but it's only been three days. Also I need a private school that knows how to deal with ADHD children and their behavioral issues. Please help so he doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

Hi I don't know what to tell you my son has asd and i'm from S.I,. . I hope all goes well. The only thing I can tell you is that these meds seem to take on a whole new life of its own. Our kids need something but I don't know anymore if medication is the answer for all of these kids. What I do see is is that once they are on you need alot of luck in hoping they could come off.Let me know if you find someone in the nyc area. I've been trying to find someone to help me out. It seem the risperidol is having a side effect on my son's blood sugar. I recently found out that he was hypoglycemic when all of his problems started and now I know why the med has such an ill effect on him. Because it directly effects the blood sugar being high or low. I wish I could be one of those parents who everything just works out for but that's not what has happened. ↑
Winter, call the NYU Child Sudy Center or Columbia Children's Hospital for a referral to a pediatric psychiatrist. You may also try Rusk Hospital for help in finding one. There is also an agency whose name I can't recall, something like center for children with special needs somewhere in the Gramercy Park area. If your child is in public school, there should be on site psychologistsand social worker who should be able to give you help--And tell them you want your son evaluated. Most private schools, even those set up for children with learning disabilities, don't want to deal with ADHD unless there is an underlying LD. Good luck, its a difficult path. ↑
Hi Natalie how are you and your child doing? ↑
My daughter is cp and takes risperdal .025 and 10mg of prozac every night before she goes to bed. She is sleeping better but not sure what it is going to do for her outburst. We are just having problems going to school. She likes it one week and the next she doesn't want to go. We are hoping that this will help her calm her fears of school when she is having a bad week. What have you seen in children at this age. She is in a wheelchair. She also takes a BCP to help with her periods since she is in a wheelchair. ↑
Hi Anom! We are doing great, thanks for asking. How are you guys?
My son had to do a sugar test... and guess what? He isborder line diabetic -correction, "medication-induced diabetic". He has been off the drugs for almost 6 months now, and did the first test in Sept. We noticed significiant behavioral changes directly corilating with the food he ate, or in some cases, skipping meals & snacks. The Dr. says that there is no reversing what has happened, but thank God he stopped taking it before he turned full-blown diabetic. So, thats sugar issues & vision problems for side effects that we were not aware we potential side effects.
The school has now said that they think my son as Sensory Auditory Processing Disorder. Do you know anything about this? I have just begun the research for this...
I hope all is well, Natalie ↑ |
Hi Natalie, The school says he is pretty much staying on task but he is not generalizing his academic programs. I don't know what to do except look for an endocrinologist and have them check to see if he is really hypoglycemic and if there is something more that could be done in that area. As far as the risperidol he is taking only 2 lines of the oral bid. However the dr.s don't really know what to think although the sugar level was at 42 when this all happened;dued to the fact that his last sugar test in june was 97. However I agree that when he has food with additives such as msg or drinks colas then his ability to function and not be easily frustrated goes down tremendously. ↑
Natalie I'm not sure about your son's diagnosis. However, sensory auditory processing is one component in autism. For my son I did the Ait training. This reteaches the ear how to listen and relieves the problem with noise. i'VE NOTICED THAT MY SON'S HEARING IS LESS BOTHERED WHEN HE doen't eat cup of noodles or anyother soup or pasta with msg. maybe research it online or talk to the dr. who made the diagnosis further. As far as my son goes he still isn't ready to come off the med as of yet./ and is probably the wrong one. My son has been giving me a hard time with his diet lately. I can't blame him its a very hard thing to do. Not to mention that most of the foods do not have the same flavor. But hw has to get use to shopping differently. when he aclamated to this style I'll start to send foor to school for lunch . I'm going to find an endocrinologist and find out once and for all if i'm doing everything right. Have a good evening. ↑
Hi i need a little advice my step son who is 4 and a half has just been put on Risperdoal because his mother thinks he has a problem when we have him his the sweetest little boy but his mother has stated he bashes other children and his teachers at day care and she has said he stabbed his sister and told her he was going to kill her we have never seen this side of him at all even when he meets new children he has never hit one when he has stayed with us but were concerned because his mother suffers from depression and is on medication her whole life it just breaks my heart because now when i look in his eyes the look vacant i know that they are not going to formally diagonse him till after he starts school in a couple of months how can some say there is something wrong when there is no formal diagonses ↑
my grandson is 4 and is being given 1mg per day of risperdal because of failure to calm down at bedtime. I am alarmed at the infomation i've read about this drug. pls give me specifics you have about it being used as a "calming" agent. ↑
My grandson is ADHD and bipolar. The diagnosis ws made when he was 3 yrs. old. My daughter and I cried and then pulled ourselves up by the boot straps and went on w;ith life. We give him every opportunity possible. He is a super student who loves school, he plays tennis, reads andplays Nintendo for fun. I do not like the meds. However, this began with a chemical impalance that can never be cured only treated. One pediatritian insisted that he get off the ritalin and risperdahl. We went through 8 weeks of hell. Finally, with him back on the meds life became as normal as possible. He does go to counseling, he does have a very understanding mother who does not crowd his schedule and works to let the small issues go. He is recently beginning to gain weight(he is 10) and that is frightening as to what he might face from otherkids. He has gotten this far. He will make it. Taking a child off medication will make actions seem worse. They have not been seen for the period of medication. Also, I believe that the disease continues to progress even with medication. A parent would not take medication away from a child with cancer or some other intense disease. This mental illness is the same. Let it be treated and let your child have as happy a life as possible. Yes, you give up your life as you might wantitmaNY TIMES, BUT the child provides many moments of joy with Scrabble or other fun board games. Enjoy your child then you can enjoy your life. I am a grandmother who fortunately gets to spend a lot of time with this child. His mother works 8-5; his father is bipolar and contributes little in time, atteniton, dependability or finances. He is at home. ↑
Fatigue and wt gain are tw sie effects I have seen with this medicine. Works well for folks with BP. ↑
Has anyone tried the transofrm my child DVD and had sucess? Before we spend the money, I am looking for some opinions on this product we saw advertised on tv. The site is www.transformmychild.com. The site describes my teen to a tee. THanks for any input ↑
My nephew was "diagnosed" with ADHD. He is now on Risperidone. .75mg a day!
He's been on this medication for about a year now. We have noticed drastic weight gain, he's not himself. Not a normal 6 year old.
The reason he was put on these meds was for behavior problems (Lack of dicipline.)
Seems like most of the children now days with "behavioral problems" are being diagnosed with ADHD and other forms of medical terms for... lack of dicipline or even normal child behavior.
I have 1 other nephew and niece (from a different family) whom have also been put on this drug.
You can't tell me doctors aren't in this for the money even the schools. Where is this country headed too?!
We need parents to RAISE our children not doctors or teachers. We parents know our kids better then anyone else, and we are giving our rights as parents away.
I think it's time for us parents to act as parents. Drugs are not a cure for our lack of parenting.
My nephews and niece are not "normal." This medication has dulled their childhood and has caused other problems which have led to other prescribed medications for the side effects caused by Risperidone.
I know many of you probably disagree with me but, someone has got to stand up and speak for our dear children. We're a drugged nation. Why can't we take care of normal life problems on our own anymore. There's a medication for about anything anymore. No wonder why the increased amounts of diseases caused by side effects from medications.
Lets think twice before allowing our children to take these meds.

My nephew has been on Risperdal for 3 years now and they just moved back from GA. the Doctor they are now seeing is trying to ween him of Risperdal and he's on a very low dose. It's been hell trying to get him off the medicine and now that he's at the final stage this has been the worse thing I have ever experienced. I feel like crying when I see him and my sister and her husband are going crazy. This poor 9 year boy is having terrible side effects. 1st insomnia 2nd no control over his entire body (arms, legs, mouth and head ) he looks like he has can't control anything his happens in the afternoon as they are still giving him .25 in the morning still. Once it wears off around 3 pm it begins and gets horrible as the night goes on. Then in the morning he complains his arms and legs hurt. 3rd has very bad case of mani (repeats himself over and over and studdards really bad) 4th mood swings to the point he scares his 5 year old sister to the point she locks herself in her room crying. 5th takes about wishing he was dead he hates this happening, he wants to die. OMG I can't stand watching this anymore. Took him to the Dr. today and they aren't sure if any of this is perminate or if when it/'s completely out of his system this will go away... He may need to start taking the medicine but Dr says this will be for the rest of his life. I say lawsuit in my sister's future just not sure when..... ↑
Dear bjom , do you think it is better to see a pyschriatrist then a neurologist? I just took my son to the neurologist it sweems my son keeps getting stuck and either can't get started or just can't finish off a task also my son hasn't been eating. Has anybody out there had this problem with this drug? AQnd please help if you can ↑
I was wondering if anyone had a child that was put on Risperdal at the age of 3? My son is 3 years old and the psych doc said that he would reccommend .25 mg once a day for him. He has not been formally diagnosed with anything yet, but we all agree that he has some emotional issues (outbursts, no fuse..he is either happy or in the middle of a melt-down, no in-betweens and it takes only seconds to go from one extreme to the next). I am also worried that he will become the "zombie" that people keep telling me he will become. HELP!! ↑
sarah I think you should see a behavoralist and a neurologist before medicating. My son just turned 17 and started meds at around 15. His starting dose was .25 bid. He almost came off but have had to place him back on it due to lack of sleep and not eating. Your child is only 3yrs old I would try something else before the meds. But if you feel you have no recourse then you do what you have to do. ↑
I actually wanted to wean him off on Risperdal and Addrerall... My son, who's autistic with severe ADHD- is turning 10 in Aug. and he started Risperdal when he was 7...I just realized that autism can be reveresed without this type of medications.. I wanted to try what Jenny McCarthy did to her son and when I visited her/their website, there are so many things you can do to reverse it.. and plus he's getting more jeberish talking and intese movement that you usually see from kids who has autism... Any advice of how should do weaning off? Now he's on 5.5mg of Risperdal per day... I am afraid to talk to his Neurologist and Pediatrician because they don't know crap about it... I just learned from generationrescue.com ... ↑
My son has been on risperdal for 3 years now for aggression/separation disorder. He takes 1mg twice a day. In the last year 10mg of celexia was added for depression (which was never a problem before). In the last year he has developed a few tics that comes and goes. His nose twitched continually for about a month and went away. For the last 6 month he has had a strange rolling/tic in his neck and shoulder. His pediatrician and psychiatrist has brushed it off because it does not interfere with his ability to learn at school or play sports, but I am worried that it may be causing permanent damage. Has anyone else had this type of side effect with risperdal? It has made a huge difference in his aggression and behavior, but I am worried t what cost. ↑
I had a son on this posion for 1.5 years and it almost killed him. He loss alot of his muscle function and became zombie like. The issues are too lenghty to detail, but I strongly encourage anyone considering this drug to "do your homework". The initial results were promising, but about 10 months into it , it became a nightmare. In the middle of the stromit was hard to see what we should have seen. I regret harming my child with this drug. He was only 4 when he was put on it and at age 9 still has muscle issues to this day, after 3 years of therapy.
If there is a lawyer out there who knows about this drug. CONTACT ME ! I have all my records, but most lawyers are afraid to go up against drug companies and big hospitals! ↑ |
My daughter who has Autism and behaviors as a result was put on Risperdal when she was about 7 yrs old. She is now 18. I watched a news special (CBS I think but not sure) recently that said there are now many lawsuits related to permanent problems children are suffering as a result of being on this drug, including irregular breast growth, lactation (even in males), and a hosts of others. I also read about some pituitary gland tumor lawsuits. My daughter has horrible problems with insomnia and severe and chronic constipation, and I also read that Risperdal can cause these, as well as seizures, which she suffers from. I am meeting w/her doc this month to wean her off immediately. The side effects are worse that what we were trying to treat!!! This drug really should be pulled off the shelves from what I am learning, especially for children. ↑
Okay I have been on riperdal for a few months now and I want to know how other people are living with it can I have some replies ↑
I was wondering if the risperdal is a good bi-polar med for kids 8 years
Thanks ↑ |
| My son is 3 1/2 and supposidly has ADHD but they have him on Risperdal .25mg in the morning and .25 in the evening. He also takes 2 other medications for ADHD. Isnt this too much?? Now my son is having spouts of nervousness and anxiety. Its almost like hallucinations about spiders, frogs and lizards. I am exhausted and he will only sleep with me in my bed with the light on!
