I have a three year old that was born very tiny, 3 months early. He has a long medical history. Lately he has been showing more and more signs of minor autism. He has yet to be tested, but all of his therapists, teachers, so on and so forth are encouraging tests and they are in the works. I am looking for online support and hopefully some discipline guidances. Would love to talk.  =

hi i have 6yr.old child with mild autism starting kindergarden this year.would like to hear from you.i am a single mom working full time so reply might be slow.but, for anyone reading this i would like to share the most valuable piece of info i have found on autism..please read-there's a boy in here,by judy and sean barron, the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime.m.haddon and soon will come the light by thomas a. mckean. all these sites can inform you where to obtain therapies, definitions and testing sites but, these books can help you understand how they feel, what the think, why they react to things the way they do . i know it lowered my stress level. after reading these i wanted to grab my kid up and say iam SORRY!! i now take the time to put myself in his shoes.  =

Hi everyone I am 23 and pregnant with my first baby and I pray that my child will not have to suffer from autism...I have a nine year old brother who has it and it is sooo heartbreaking because deep down in his own ways he is a genius..I just feel so bad for him cause I know he gets frustrated when trying to get us to understand something that he wants....but every step towards progress he makes we greatly are thankful for....this past school year I think he really has improved..I know that his conditions could probably be worse off then they are... he isn't totally non-verbal we are starting to understand each other a little bit so every sentence that we share with each other is truely cherished...I hate seeing this many people in this room are living with it in their families too but at the same time it is nice to have a crowd of people to offer each other support.  =

I have a 13 year old daughter who is high functioning autistic. She has been struggling alot lately with anxieties and depression. Was wondering if anyone else had been through this with their child.  =
Name: Linda • Date: 11/29/2005 14:18:02
In response to Jose...while your story breaks my heart, i am inclined to say...stop searching. My daughter is just about 3 1/2 and just now started speaking single words, although they dont make sense to most people. In life, things happen, for whatever the reason, and we cant always change or prevent them from happening. Lonlieness can be tough on anyone even people who have "normal" children. Sometimes, coupled individuals can be lonely too. I am not Christian, but I have faith. I have faith that you will find someone who will love and accept you and your child, or rather, she will find you. For now, your child should come first. Austic or not, our children are or should be the most important people around us. Even a child who can not speak, or show outward affection, my be able to feel it just the same, or even more. I dont think we will ever know for sure. I do know this, my little girl knows when Im sad or depressed, or angry. My little girl seems to come to me with the slightest of hand when I need it most. She may not be able to say "I love you mommy" but when she pats my head, or sits close to me, or the( few and far between )times when she looks for a kiss or a hug prooves to me that she can feel, even without the expression "normal" people need to see. You will find happiness, I am sure of this. It will come when you least expect it, and when you need it the most. For now, look to your child, to yourself , or to others out there who are willing to listen, but don't expect a romantic relationship in return. Most single mothers put all of thier energy into their children, I know I do, and sometimes just to have someone who is willing to listen is enough to get you through until the "real deal" shows up in your life. I hope this doesnt sound judgemental, I dont mean it to be. I just read your posting and it tugged at my heart. I wish you luck, and all the best in life. I'm here to share an ear to anyone, as I have borrrowed many ears a time or two, and I always "pay it foward"  =

Hi Donna,I have a 6 year old son who has autism. We found out when he was 2.5 yrs old. It has been very hard to deal with. He is super active and can be very loud at times, especially in public. He is verbal and smart, but needs the right teachers to help him.He has all the typical signs of autism.Hand flapping, vocal noises, repeating things he hears, unaware of danger, and he didn't start talking until he was4 yrs old.His name is Ryan, by the way.He is big for his age and can be aggressive at times. Usually when other children get too close to him. He has an older brother who is 8 yrs old. They get along but fight alot (typical).Sometimes his brother acts like ryan to get attention. If you would like to email me its-donna@pstel.net  =

I dont wish to insult anyone, not having an autistic child myself. I am currently studying to become a teacher and for my dissertation I am looking into what support families with autistic children recieve, whether it be with a diagnosis or schooling (Each stage of their child's development.) I have recently talked with two families with autistic children, and both a which had a parent as a teacher. Each family expressed the difficulties they had obtaining any help and support, and if it wasn't because of their professional knowledge they would of found it extreamly difficult. I wanted to research whether this is a common problem which other families have experience. I would be greatful of any response. Many thanks Becky  =

lisa do you have the same frustration with communication? What do you use? signing or picture exchange or scheduling things. Just curious how others get through the terrible 5's with these special needs children. Although she goes to school she works on different level there than at home(or maybe I do, I'm not sure.). she is so beautiful and sweet but sometimes her meltdowns are so much especially since she doesn't seem to be able to reason right now or especially while the meltdown is going on. Hope to hear some response soon. thanks  =

I just 'stumbled' across this site and thought I would give it a try
I have 2 boys aged 9 and 7, both diagnosed with autism
I am interested in contacting other families (whether multiple children or not have been diagnosed), I would like to get some ideas on how to cope with the ongoing struggle, any ideas on how to move the kids forward
also, I am a full time working mom, so I would like to hear from parents on how they keep everything together  =

hi both my children have problems with speaking and social skills, but they have progressed no end in the last year i have used picture exchange and schedules and pecs , this method realy works. The kidsstill have tantrums but not as many also at school they use the T.E.A.C.H method  =

this is for Lisa - what is the T.E.A.C.H method
both my boys do very well at school (go figure!) but I think it is because of they have much more rigid schools, they know what is expected; at home - it's a zoo where all the animals are out of the cages...  =

It is a really great chat room!! come visit some time . If you cant find it email me and when I FINALLY do get the site I can send you the addy .. hope to see you soon, and feel free to email me if you need anything and if I can help I will be glad too.. :-)  =

Hi Kady , i live in the UK the teach method was developed in North Caroliner Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communcation Handicapped children (T.E.A.C.C.H) the main things that it is the way the enviroment is , there are clear visuel boundries segmentig the space into reognisable parts to help the children understand what they are expected to do in each area.then they have the schedule which visually tells them what is occuring using either objects, photos, pictures, words. All the tasks are presented visually and it lets them know when they have finished what is happening next.  =

Hi! I have two beautiful little boys aged 4 & 6 who are both Autistic. Trying to decide if we should have a third child at the moment but terrified of the risks so we probably won't. Would love to talk to other parents with multiple Autistic children or anyone else who wants to have a chat. My hubby especially would like to hear from some Dads and get a support system going. Cheers, Wendy Email: dsalvant@chariot.net.au  =

hi i have a 10 year old son jamie who has autism,it was hard work when he was younger but is much easier now he is older. Its just that people sometimes stare at him and ask whats wrong with him, i feel protective as his mum.  =

this is for Kathy Hotz -

I tried to send an email to your address but for some reason it came back - I think it's my computer

you indicated your son is 9 years old and has a temper

I have 2 boys, ages 9 and 7 both autistic

the older one is the one who is so adaptable, loving and wanting to play with others (the younger one is more self contained) - but the older one has temper, so far as to hit himself about 4 months ago which would knock any adult down, then before xmas he started hitting others both accidentally and intentionally now he has started hitting himself again that I think children's aide will be called soon!

I am not sure how to deal with the tantrums - ignore it (that's what my husband does which I think makes it worse), spank him (not worth it), discipline him (by this time he has reached his peak and he does not listen) - just wondered how to deal with it and if you have any ideas

also - do you have toilet training ideas - both are trained for no 1 but not no 2 -

actually, anyone could answer - I would appreciate it

thanks  =

Cindy..
your son is nearing puberty.. he is going through hormonal changes and NO understanding of what is going on. 12 is such a normal age for "behaviors" to be exhibited, even in typical kids.

You need to find someone that will help you through the next stages of his life. The next 10 years are very confusing for him unless someone can help him approach it and deal with it. Best of luck  =

Hello to all you fantastic parents with special child, I am the mother of 5 great boys, 4 of whom have Autistic Spectrum Disorder, 3 with autism, 1 with Asperger from 14 years to 5 years. Our eldest son age 17 has dyslexia. Life is a constant rollercoaster of highs and lows. We live in Ireland, both my husband and I have given up our jobs to care for our sons. Is there anyone out there who has 4 children on the Spectrum? Would love to talk to parents with multiple children with ASD.
Take care everyone. Mary  =

Hi, My name is Robin And i have a 13 year old son who is Autistic. When Ricky was 1 and a half he was dianoised with Tubulur Scerorsis (T.S) since than he has been dianosied with Autsium and OCD (obsesesive compulsion disorder) My spelling stinks but iam lucky to have this moment... Ricky is in the tub so i have a few before he starts yelling. We have a meeting tommrow with his school because of his behavior he has been hitting, cussing telling the teachers hes the boss ETC.... Ricky talks in a third person most the time i will hear him say "Go ahead Ricky ask mom if she will let you go outside"
I have had more than a few strange looks from that one. okay iam back i knew it wouldnt be long i have read a few of your posts most of your children are still very young if i could turn back time and do anything over it would be the way i did things for ricky instead of taking the time to let him learn to do it his self. It is always easier to be in a hurry and just put thier socks and shoes on them it takes them 15 minutes and the whinning!!.... it is easier to just do it we will work on it later well....11 years later iam still dressing Ricky . So much i would love to share with you iam so consumed by Ricky and this Autisum life i dont even remeber the last time i took a shower without comming out to find Ricky sitting out side the door waiting on me. Others dont understand not really not unless thier child has autisum it is a word i have grown to hate a word i have grown to defend a word i have grown to accept as my own for that is my life because Ricky is my life. and Autisum is his life. Iam back i had to tape Ricky's head phones both sides why? i have no clue but he insisted Iam tired so tired as all of you can relate to escpecally the ones with older children with Autisum. I hope i find time to re visit this board and chat with all of you i would love to exchange ideas and thoughts i think the best help any of us could possibly have is one another sometimes just having a safe place to vent is something we all need from time to time..Robin GbsnMi@aol.com  =
