i need a VERY important question answered. this is my first baby and since my 12th week i have been looking around at baby matresses. it seems that the cheaper the mattress is the softer it is...does that mean that we need a study yet sort of soft one but not to soft? how do i know what is too soft? adults get the mattresses that your body sinks into so that it supports everything on your body but are babies different? like do they need less soft matresses for better support. moms that have done this before, please help me. it just seems weird to me that the cheaper, the softer...so, whats going on?

from everything i've ever heard, and i am working on baby #3, the mattress should be very firm without lots of blankets and stuffed animals to avoid sids. thats one of the reasons they say a baby should not sleep in an adult bed. newborns cant turn their heads like we can and can suffocate.

wow I am so glad that you started this thread, I came on here to start one too!! Great minds think alike. I read a poster the other day at hospital which said the same as what Jen wrote but as far as the firmness went it did not mention a thing..... I reckon firm would be the way to go but lets here what the professionals, the mums who have done it before have to say.

The biggest killer of babies aged from one month to one year is
SIDS - short for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or 'cot death'.

SIDS isn't a disease, but a term used for the sudden, unexplained death of a baby who seems well, or almost well, and whose death can't even be explained by a post-mortem examination.

Make sure the baby sleeps on its back. The risk of SIDS is increased if babies sleep on their tummies.

Make sure the baby's head is uncovered during sleep.
Loose bedclothes can easily cover a baby's head, so it's important to tuck the baby in securely so he or she can't slip under the them. Don't leave soft toys, pillows and cot bumpers in the place where your baby sleeps. There's no need for a baby to have a pillow. Use a firm, clean well fitting mattress (but never put babies down to sleep on a water bed or a bean bag). When you put a baby down to sleep, always position the baby's feet at the bottom of the cot.

Keep the baby smoke-free before birth and after. The risk of SIDS is increased if the mother smokes during pregnancy and may also be increased if the father smokes as well. If both parents are non-smokers, there is a lower risk of SIDS. Babies who are exposed to tobacco smoke also have a higher risk of SIDS, so make sure no one smokes near your baby - not in the house, the car, or anywhere else.

Most information can be found on the web if you type in sids in google or even better at your next antenatal class ask for some literature about it and have a read.

yes all crib mattresses fit all cribs. no, you dont have to put your baby in a bassinet. i think the small space makes them feel more secure though. with my 1st baby, he was put in the crib at like two weeks and slept through the night. with my second, he didnt go into the crib till about 3 months and was a horrible sleeper in his bassinet. i almost think it is better to put them in the crib sooner so they get used to the big space. once they have their little bed then go to a big bed i think they get scared. so i dont know about the theory of a baby sleeping better in a bassinet. it didnt work for me.

Hey Heather um i think probably a firm mattress is the best. my daughters is a sealy from wal-mart and its firm and i think she likes it. and you know that they will be sleeping in it for a while, after the crib its onto a toddler bed, so its important to pick a durable one to. hope this helps.

thanx alot you guys. that was alot of help and alot of worries taken off my mind. I found this great bed set the other day that is on sale for way less then it usually is and i was like "yes, its so cute!" and then i thought to myself "crap, we still gotta go buy the matress!"...lol...Does anyone ever wonder why the babies bed has so much to it?!? i mean, you cant just buy one thing because there is always something more to it. like the fitted sheets for example...after you buy the sheet you have to have a matress pad...couldnt someone make this easier for us? lol.. i cant wait though. it will all be worth it in the end. good luck ladies and once again, thank you.

hi heather. what about the tuna girl. she scared me. ha ha. another thing, dont forget that the mattress will also fit into a toddler bed. my son used his till he was about 4 1/2, so get the mattress that will last four or five years, plus you can pass it on to someone else or use it if you have another baby. i know what u r saying about the bedding. we arent finding out the sex and its such a pain because there is so much to buy and i cant decorate the nursery till baby is born.

not necessarily, my aunt didnt find out the sex of her baby until it came out. she painted the walls this beautiful yellow and paited her ceiling blue with yellow like swirly designs...but the ceiling waany flat, it went up into a point. it was really pretty. then she bought an armoire and just opened the doors and set the changing pad on the shelf and it looked so fancy. and then with the crib, she just bought a boy/girl crib set and i think there a plenty of cribs that will fit both sexes. she bought alot of boy/girl clothes...theres alot of them out there when you rally look...i mean, you can do white with yellow or tan with teddy bears and all that and then when you find out the sex you can do more shopping. ive seen the most beautiful nursery done before and not know what the sex was. yea, she kind of scared me too..lol.. but i think she was just really passionate about it because of her child.
