I have been diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravidarium, spent about 9 days in the hospital. Basically it is severe morning (all day) sickness. I eventually became so dehydrated I ended up in the hospital, as I cannot keep anything down, even water.
I was released and given Zofran to ease the nausea and vomitting. Diclectin took the edge off, but didn't curb the vomitting and nausea.
My issue is this: I am 14 1/2 weeks pregnant and I called this service called Motherrisk out of Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto and their studies indicate no abnormalities or birth defects associated with women taking Zofran in the first trimester of their pregnancy.
I am in my second trimester and there are no studies on effects of the medication after the first trimester. The medication I am taking is given to cancer patients to help with the effects of chemo. The side effects are substantial (it feels like I have every pregnancy symptom along with every side effect from this medication) and it is taking a toll on me emotionally and physically.
Along with the regular pregnancy symptoms (which have been a constant since week 4) from my medication, I am itchy everywhere, dry mouth, can't sleep, constipated, dizzy etc etc.
Does ANYONE know of any alternative I can try that isn't, well used for treating chemo patients? Something along the more natural side? I tried to stay off Zofran for a couple of days and unfortunately I fall right back to the constant nausea and vomitting, which I do not care to spend another week or two in the hospital.
PLEASE, if anyone knows of anything I am willing to give it a shot.

I had that. It lasted up till the day I gave birth. Vomiting every day, constantly dizzy, sick, etc. Nothing you can do except take the medication prescribed for you and stay hydrated. I took Cyclizine (Valoid)

The problem is Hyperemesis is they don't really understand what causes it. And there's not natural remedies. Cyclizine worked for me for about 2-3 hours (i.e. stopped me vomiting, but I still felt sick) but apart from a few days, I was vomiting every day all 41 weeks. It's not nice. :( But it won't affect your baby. I still gave birth to a healthy 8lb 3oz baby boy. Take care.

Sounds gross but I had to take a lunchbox with me to be sick in any time I went out in the car (which wasn't often) and I was cleaning the toilet EVERY DAY.

You do get used to being constantly sick ... That's the odd thing about it. And it will stop the moment you give birth. :)

Thanks! It is nice to hear from someone else who has gone through the same thing...I totally hear ya about cleaning the toilet (and everyone else's! lol)

So I guess just deal with it is the best solution for now. I am glad to hear your baby was fine, so I guess the countdown is on until my baby's birthday!

I am used to it, I am just tired of it!

Thanks again!

My morning sickness wasn't as severe as yours, but I did become dehydrated and coudln't keep anything down, including water. When I first called my OB they told me to try this combo:

Morning-- 1/2 pill of unisom and 25mg of Vitamin B6
Afternoon-- 1/2 pill of unisom and 25 mg of Vitamin B6
Bedtime-- Whole pill of unisom and 50 mg of Vitamin B6

I was a little nervous when I heard this combo because unisom is an over the counter sleeping pill, but I did research on the computer and found that it is used to treat morning sickness. It helped take the edge off, but I had trouble keeping the pills down sometimes so I ended up being put on phenergan suppositories because I didn't have to worry about keeping them down.

I've known several women who have taken the zofran during early pregnancy and their babies were born very healthy. Good luck, I hope you start to feel better soon.

thanks 04nidak...did the unisom help you to sleep as well? I am having difficulty with that too...

When I could keep it down it did help me sleep which was a good thing because when I slept I didn't get sick...usually. I hope it helps.
