I bought maternity clothes when I was about 3 months pregnant. At that point a couple pairs of pants already weren't fitting. You'll just have to judge for yourself when your clothes are getting too tight.

i went right away to old navy and got stuff that i ended up HATING with a passion, the pants NEVER fit right, all they had was tapered leg and im tall so the legs were too short i quit wearing them even around the house it was just too embarrassing!!! dont buy stuff that you wouldnt normally wear just cause its maternity!!!! i say pay a little bit more and go to motherhood and get a pair of stretchy black pants and generally they have a better selection of jeans too. im too far along to invest in any more maternity stuff but i regret buying aLL the stuff i got at old navy except for the tank tops i cant wait to put all the maternity stuff in a bag and send it to goodwill or salvation army i hate the sight of it all!

I would but a few maternity items early though. It kinda creeps up on you. I went to work one day just fine had my pants buttoned and everything, as the day went by, they kept getting tighter and uncomfortable. By the end of the day I couldn't even zip them! So glad I wore a long sweater that day. Another co-worker exploded like that overnight. Just came in the next day with a belly. You never know when it's coming, it's kinda fun though. I didn't need to wear mine till I was close to 7 months though I just wore low cut pants and longer tops. Just watcvh out for the pants the have a mid or underbelly elastic. They seem cooler, but once you get a belly, your belly will push them down and you will lose your pants, not fun.
