I have three kids. my girl is 7 my boy is 5 my youngest girl is 3. my problem is my younger two. four times this month in the middle of the night or early morning, they sneak in the kitchen. which is gated my a baby gate. they grab food out of the kitchen and take it in there rooms and eat it. along with staining the carpet beds and walls. every time they do this i ground them to there bed for a couple days. only able to get up to pee or eat. and a couple days later if not the next day after i let them out of grounding there at it again. what can i do??? ↓

| Lock up your food. Swat their rears. Make them eat a very large amount before bed so they won't want to get up at night and eat. ↑ |

| Get a chain lock and put it on their door before they go to sleep. Don't just leave them locked in their rooms all dfay or anything, let them pee before they go to sleep, put them to bed, chain the door and leave it at that. I have my 2 year old locked in the room at night. We live in an apartment and he knows how to pull a chair to the door and unlock all three locks. That should help, you can get the regular chain locks at Walmart. Also if you go with the lock, make sure your smoke dectors work so there won't be fatalities if there's a fire. ↑ |

| hi! from what I'm reading here lots of people still get spanked, like me. I got in big fat trouble this weekend so I have to go to bed early for two days and I get a spanking each day before bed. I hate it. I have to go over my dads lap. He only uses his hand, I've never gotten it with anything else, but he spanks HARD! :( I got punished because I mouthed off and broke a window. Even though the window was an accident I lied about it and then felt bad, so I told what really happened- that's why I'm getting spanked! I'm getting sent to bed early because I mouthed off in public. It's almost dinner time here but after dinner it's going to be a couple hours of waiting until 8:30 - my new bedtime for awhile UGH. I rarely every spank my kids, so I can't offer that advice. If I spanked my children and grounded them to their beds, it would be teaching them to find a better way to hide what they're doing rather then leaving evidence to be found.
The best punishment I've found, is work. Scrub the bathroom floor, the kitchen floor, the bathtub, etc. Something that takes physical work. Although, that may work for your five year old, it may not for your three year old.
My kids will loose privilages. If you have a swimming activity planned, they loose that ability. McDonalds, etc. This makes a much smarter mark on them then spanking or locking in their room.
And the biggest thing I have found that really works, is to let them know how sad thier actions make you :( Let them see you feel very hurt and let down. It's this alone that I have found to make the biggest point on my kids - - because you DO feel let down and hurt.
Basically, you want them to take responsibility for their own actions, and to think about an action they're about to do before they choose to do it.
Usually kids who take food and hide it are hungry. Are they getting enough to eat before bed? During the day? If so, then maybe keep a snack bowl handy for them, with a box of raisans, or other such items. Something they are allowed to take out of and eat.

| I put achain on their door for their safety. My oldest is 2.5 and he can unlock the front room door and get out. I don't do it to scare him. I do it to keep him in the house and out of the kitchen drawers, unless you think it's okay for them to get out and into the knife drawer or something. And I'm 19 years old, so don't think that it's so easy. Wait until your little one starts to climb on chairs, learns to open door WITH doorknob covers on, and have another baby to chase. Safety comes before looking good to me. ↑ |

| I'm 15 and was reading this, when I lived in england before my parents died we were never spanked, it was only grounding, or made to do chores as suggested by another persoon on here. I now live with my older sister in nyc and get it almost everynight with her brush, even for little things like telling her to F-k off. I think this country is barbaric, as soon as I'm old enough I'm going back to england, at least over there they treat young people with the respect they deserve. ↑ |

| We have a sliding lock on the front door at the top, as well as the lock on the doorknob and a hook lock right under the chain lock. He climbs on chairs to reach them and knows how to undo them all. We have smoke alarms every where in our house. I just keep my oldest son in the room at night, from around 10pm to around 7am. When he starts listening better I will take the lock off his door, but until I know he won't play in the kitchen drawers or go out thedoor, I'm keeping them on there. ↑ |

Your baby is young, mine will be 3 soon. Meaning he climbs OVER baby gates, meaning that it doesn't matterwhat kind of barracade I use on the doors, hecan get past them. I can handle getting called a bad mom on the internet by a young girl who has a baby, not a hyper headstrong toddler. I can't and won't deal with my son getting out the door and kidnapped or hit by a car, or climbing up on the counter and stabbing himself with a knife or scissors. You will see what I mean when your baby starts getting into stuff. I watch my kids close, but even I have to sleep sometimes. ↑ |
