I had my 20 week ultrasound. The results came back that there were signs of fetal soft markers which, is a red fag for a high risk pregnancy. Ultrasounds that show signs of soft markers have a higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities. This is my first pregnancy, I am a single mom, and stressing way out of my mind with all these thoughts. Although, I have an appointment to meet with the Genetics Doctor and I have also decided to have a Amniotic fluid test done, on Tuesday. I would like to know is there anyone out there that has or is experiencing the same thing I am? Please respond to what was the outcome or an update of what is going on? All the support is appreciated. Thanks.

Soft markers are NOT A BIG DEAL.

Choroid plexus cysts (CPCs) occur in approximately 30% of babies and usually disappear at about week 30. Even if they don't they usually do not effect the child (They only discovered them in the 1980s and have since found perfectly normal adults with CPC)

Not a usually a reason for the Amniotic test, unless there are other indicators of a problem.

I know it's worrying, we recently had the 20 week US and they found one and it's terrified us. But we've been assured that it is not a reason to loose sleep. (easily said).

Dear Reale21 I do hope that everyting turned out all right for you.

Reale21-
Hi. What markers were found during your ultrasound? My baby has pyelectasis (soft marker for DS) and it was questionable on whether or not a cpc was seen.

I know how you feel. It is so concerning to hear that your baby is more at risk to have a chromosomal abnormality. From what I have read and heard soft markers can be found in "normal" babies as well.

Did you have an afp or quad test done?

Hang in there!

Re: Soft Markers

Went for an ultrasound at 20 weeks and was told they found 2 markers ecogenic heart and nucheal fold. We were freaked out not knowing what that could mean. We went to see a Genetics counciller and was told there was a third marker the ecogenic bowel. They offered us a Amnio, but we denied it.

My doctor told us the finding of 3 is significant and that i should prepare myself for what could be... and how do i prepare myself for maybe something could be wrong but maybe not

Im just taking each day at a time and trying to enjoy the pregnancy as best as i can and hoping/praying for the best!

If anyone out there has had a similar experience let me know

Thanks
PS
I did meet another mother who had 2 markers found during ultrasound and her son was born perfectly heathy, so I hope the best for all of you out there

I am 25 weeks pregnant right now. I just found out recently that my baby has 2 soft markers- fetal pyelectasis and echocardiac focus (a spot on the heart). I decided to get an amniocentesis done yesterday because I was told that it could be Downs Syndrome. My amnio was painless and very fast. I am glad I did it. I have good faith that the baby is fine, but I feel it is important to know what the condition of the baby is so that everyone can prepare properly. If the baby does not have Downs Syndrome, there are other reasons for having pyelectasis, like blockage of renal flow and whatnot. If the pyelectasis gets worse, it could call for a need for surgery. It's important to know so that the medical team can work on it. I find out my results next week!

My daughter had 2 soft markers, a 2 vessel cord and a white spot on her heart, we were told about the higher probability of downs. We stressed out and worried for weeks. Our daughter Annabella was born 2 weeks premature due to the 2 vessel cord. Other than that she is perfectly healthy and happy and was home in 3 days. I know its impossible not to worry, but hopefully our storey will keep your mind open.

Both of our sons had soft markers. Our first had the cyst and the echogenic focus on the heart, and the second had the echogenic focus. We were terrified like most, especially during the first pregnancy but it was for nothing. Both of our sons were born perfectly normal.

Try not to worry about it, chances are everything will be fine.

It was recomened I get an amnio cuz of this and my age but I have had numerous miscarriages I don't want the amnio but I am worried . Do u have any advise? Have u had this happen or know some one who has?

We just got the results of our U/S (19 weeks). Two markers: echogenic bowel and CPC...freaking out. I'm 31, and have a healthy 2 year old already. Anyone else have these markers??

I had my 20 week ultrasound this moring and they found 1 soft marker. The doctor stated there is a very very very small chance that anything could be wrong with the baby. He stated if everything else about the baby is normal, he is not that concerned about the marker. I also asked about the amniotic test and he recommeded against it due to another set of complications that could arise, and possible loss of the baby. He stated the marker may go away in time but was not worried abou it. He also stated the more markers you have the more concern there is. I would ask for your doctor's recommendation, ask how many markers there are, the what are the chances something may be wrong with the baby?

I am pregnant with twins. My doctor said that baby B is fine... but Baby A has two cysts on his brain, they were not able to locate the 4 chambers of his heart (they said this could be because of the way he was positioned and because he was moving too much) and Baby A also has bi-lateral mild dialation of the renal collecting system. All of these markers by themselves are not a big deal... but all together makes us worry that it could be trisomy 18. Anybody else have simlilar experiences? We see a specialist on Friday.

Hi, I'm 24 and this is my first pregnancy. I just went for an us and im 19 weeks. My baby has 3 soft markers for downs, cyst in brain, calcium deposit in heart and kidneys are swollen. Those are all three soft markers for downs. I am really worried and also getting an amnio done, but I wont get the results for 2 weeks. I have read other posts by women who have had 3 markers and their babies were healthy after all. These problems can go away on their own and doesnt necceserly mean that the baby has down syndrome. I am praying that my baby doesnt have ds. I still have hope, especially because I am young and I have been as healthy as can be during my pregnancy. I was really stressed out for the first two days after I ound out but I realize that its just odds, and my dr. says that its just a numbers game and if I get pregnant again it doesnt mean that my 2nd baby will have downs, even if my first one does. Good Luck!

Im 24 weeks pregnant and at my 20 week scan they discovered 1 soft marker which is a thickened nuchal fold which measured 6.3mm. When I first found out i was really upset knowing something could be wrong with my baby and still it causes alot of anxiety. Everything else in the ultrasound came back as normal and the serum screening came back negative which my doctor indicated i was low risk for my baby having downs. I was offered an amnio by the genetic counsellor but she said that there is a chance of miscarrying so I refused it. I can't help but research it all the time and have read that women with the same soft marker and same measurement have had perfectly healthy babies which gives me some piece of mind yet there is still a part of me that can't help but worry. Is there anyone else with the same soft marker?

I am 29 years old and this is my first pregnancy. I have been so excited to find out I am having a daughter. Although I recieved horrible news 3 days ago. They found what may be 2 soft markers one on her brain and another in her intestines. I've been told not to worry, that it's common and most times it clears on its own. Telling a pregnant woman not to worry is CRAZY!!!! I want nothing more than for her to be healthy. I am praying for a miracle. In two days we are taking more tests.

My wife is 20 wks and she had an amnio a couple of weeks ago because it came back that she had a high poss of having a DS 1/20. The amnio came back clear, but we've been to the 20 wk scan today and she has two of the soft signs, bowel and cyst on the brain. Wife is fit and healthy, we're trying to be positive but it is worrying, although the nurse say the amnio is the main thing and that was ok. You just have to remember that the odds are stacked in your favour. We've both been tested for CF today. Will keep posted.

This is for user DD24 or anyone else who can help. My sister in law just went in for an ultrasound and they found 3 markers cysts in the brain, narrowed vessel in the heart and swollen kidneys also the baby did not open his hands and that could be a sign of trisomy 18. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced so many markers but a negative amnio. She is freaking out and cannot get back in for awhile.

Im 20 weeks pregnant and had my 19 week scan last Wednesday. Everything else looked good in the ultrasound except for 1 soft marker which is a thickened nuchal fold which measured between 6mm to 7mm. The serum screening came back negative for both 1st and 2nd trimesters. My risk went from 1/16,000 to 1/940 after the 19 week ultrasound, which the doctor and the genetic counselor still considered low risk. We were offered amnio, but after they explained that the risk of miscarriage is higher (1/350) than our actual risk of having a DS baby (1/940), my husband and I decided not to do it. But I've been worried and freaking out since. :(

My Wife is due in Dec/2010, and she also had two soft markers.

we did all the test but not the Amniotic fluid test due to the risk to the baby.

I have been reading and alot of people say they has same thing and baby was ok/normal.

We are also stressing on this issue but blod work came back fine 1 in 20,000? so not sure what to think at this point.
The Dr's do not say much to a void rick of saying somthing wrong.

How did your test go? Have you gone?

I Just had my 20 week ultrasound and am freaking out extremely! I am 21 years old and this is my husbands and my first child. We were told that our little boy has two soft markers and I have to go see a specialist next week. He told me now to worrk to much. I had the genetic testing at week 12 and came back 1:10,000 of a baby with ds or trisonomy. I am still very worried though. They found a spot on the heart and also a kidney enlarged by 1 millimeter. He assured me that I shouldn't worry because 1 millimeter is really not that much, but if he is having me see a specialist I should be worried!! Help! Has anyone had both these soft spots? If so what happened?

It is hard to read this forum and see that there are so many other parents going through the same stress as us. We are currently pregnant with our third baby (I am 22, my husband 26), our first child had Trisomy 13 and is in Heaven, our second is a wonderfully healthy 2-year-old girl, and our third is also a little girl. Every pregnancy has had soft-markers so far. It is so nerveracking. This should bring some reassurance, however. Our first actually did have something wrong and there wasn't any guessing about it, the doctors "knew" (they will say 99% sure) before we even had our Amnio that J was not healthy. Our first daughter had 1 soft-marker, the cyst on the brain, that corrected itself by birth. We opted to have the Quad Test done and thankfully received reassurance and the chances of disability were very low. With our second daughter, they saw two concerns, Echogenic Foci and SUA (Single Umbilical Artery). The Echogentic Foci isn't so concerning, it's a very common soft-marker in healthy babies (as is the cyst on the brain), but the SUA is disconcerting. Our son had SUA along with his many other problems. We opted for the Quad Test again and the results unfortunately were the opposite of reassuring: 1 in 350. Not considered positive, but with our history and the 2 soft-markers, our doctor is really pushing for the Amnio. Just thought I would share some of the knowledge I have. I am praying for all of you!

hi,
I am pregnant with my first child and I am having a similar scare. I had my blood work doen at 16 weeks and everything came back fine. I went for my 20 week scan last monday and was tod that I could call for the results in 3 days. I figured if I didn't hear anything back from the doc then everything is ok. no news is good news right? So fast forward to yesterday, my doctor called and said he would like me to re take my scan because he saw spaces in my baby's brain and intestines!!!!!! I am terrified to say the least. I was so scared that I went right to his office after work to get some clarification. He told me not to worry and these are "soft signs" of a potential problem. I am still very scared and I do not know how to cope with this feeling. I go for my second scan tomorrow at 9 am. I am praying that everything will be OK!! Has anyone ever been told that their doctor saw "spaces" anywhere? when I tried to look it up, I got nothing. Is he wording it incorrectly? I am so confused and scared. Please if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it

My wife and I had a normal ultrasound at 18 weeks at the hospital and they noticed a very small Choroid Plexus Cystus in brain and sent us to the specialist. At the specialist he noticed an additional soft market of a Echogenic Focus (calcium deposit on the heart). He was very re-assuring that everything would be fine, but it's still very scary. Please keep us in your prayers as I will keep you all in mine! He said it was a 1/600 or so chance of DS, but that's way higher than 1/3000 w/o a marker. The specialist did say he wouldn't have bothered us with the Choroid Cyst at that early of an ultrasound which was a nice thing to hear. I just hope everything is ok with our baby boy!

Hi I had an ultra sound done at 19 weeks and they found a bright spot on the baby's heart. I've been reading and some have said it could be a softmarker for down syndrome. I'm only 19 years old should I be worried?

Name: Devon | Date: Nov 19th, 2010 12:51 AM
Wife has one soft marker here. Kidney enlarged by just under 1mm. But get this: since she is 40 we were told chance of downs is 1:43! Sounds bad but that is still a 98% chance of a healthy baby. Other two children are perfectly normal. Since then she had two miscarriages and genetic testing was conducting and there were no chromosone abnormalities in the fetus. She was 38 and 39 with those pregnancies. For those of faith, just remember God is in control and has no odds. If it is His will it will be either way. Just continue to pray. Prayer changes things. Maybe this is a test of faith for us all.

My son had 2 soft markers throughout my pregnancy- pyelectasis and echo foci on the heart. Glad to report, he was born perfectly fine.
