When my grandpa was still living,he was in the hospital and had alzheimers and was diabetic. One day when my mom was sitting with grandpa a very ignorant nurse came into the room with an insulin shot in one hand and a cup of orange juice in the other. My mom asked her, what do you think you're doing?! And the nurse said well I'm going to give him the insulin shot and then have him drink the orange juice down! My mom said to her,oh no I don't think so!!!! My mom said you will check his bloodsugar first and then we will see which one he needs!!!!! I cannot believe how STUPID this nurse was!!!! Makes me wonder how many patients die unecessarily each year in hospitals due to ignorant nurses?  =

I wouldnt wonder that at all,I'd be wondering how many patients would die unecessarily each year without the dedicated and over worked, underpaid nurses!  =

Not ALL nurses are DEDICATED! I'm not saying they all suck but I'd bet only a handful out of 100 of them are really dedicated and in the job to begin with for the right reasons, the rest are only out for the pay which by the way is quite handsome at that! Nurses can make quite a healthy living in the wage department. If you are one of the few good one's,congratulations but many are not!  =

In response to "Lizzi", what does your ridiculous story have to do with my post?........... I have great concern being a pregnant nurse and possibly being exposed to harmful situations and illnesses. I am curious what other nurses have come in contact with and how they deal with it in the workplace. ........As to your other responses, it sounds as if because of your experience with your grandpa, you have automatically put an inaccurate label on every nurse out there. I have been a nurse for 11 years and have worked in every area of nusing and have yet to come in contact with an ignorant nurse. We attend anywhere from 2-4 years of extensive training and testing to become a nurse and are compensated for our efforts. You are once again mistaken if you think that nurses even begin to make what they truly deserve........  =

Lizzie,
you come across quite ignorant of the nursing profession which tells me you have had very little dealings with nurses, your bet that only a handful of nurses are dedicated couldnt be more wrong.Like RachelNicolemom,I have yet to meey a nurse who is not dedicated to the profession and who wouldnt treat each patient in they care for like they would treat their own mother or father!Your response to RachelNicolemom's post is completely out of place,as she was looking for some reassurance from other moms or moms to be who might relate to what she is going through, not some uninformed, narrow minded woman mouthing off about things she relly doesnt have a clue about, maybe you would be better off directing your anger at patient services instead of his site here women come for support from each other, you are COMPLETELY out of place here!!  =

Hiya rachelnicolemom, I too am working part-time as a nurse. While pregnant, I had lots of patients with Hep C, MRSA and all kinds of other things too. I just asked to trade with another nurse when I was overly concerned (or when it was convenient) , else I was just really careful when starting IVs and when dealing with bodily fluids. As far as I know I worried in vane...Wyatt is a healthy happy 6 month old. Good luck to you hun!  =

Yep,you're right EVERY SIGLE NURSE in the world is worthy of a badge and $1,000 an hour!!!!!! (Yeah RIGHT!!!!!!!!)  =

Of course you speak so highly of nurses because you ARE one! What I'm saying is NOT ALL are worthy of the title, and in the case with my grandpa, that theory was PROVEN!!!!!  =

Thanks to those of you that have addressed my concerns.... I appreciate your support. I will have to say that the institution I work for is very supportive, especially the staff in my unit. Now that more people are aware of my pregnancy, I believe that they will watching my back. I can guarantee that I will will not have to enter a TB isolation room during this pregnancy. However, I do not think I can avoid other C.Diff, MRSA, etc. isolation patients because of the high prevalency of these patients.......On a side note, I posted a question on another forum about the significance of TSH being low during pregnancy (0.12). Do any of you know or know of anyone dealing with this issue. I'm 12 weeks along......  =

Rachelnicolemom~ I have been a CNA for 8 years and have worked in a nursing home for one year and then in the hospital for 4 years and now I work in the Home Health Department(I see the patients after they are discharged from the hospital). I feel your concern and I think with all the schooling and training you endured to become and RN, you know that if you take the proper precautions, you will be fine:) But...if your job is willing to accomidate you and support you, I would take advantage of that while pregnant.
And just so you know, even though I am not in school to be a nurse(I'm an education major to teach Health and English), I have worked along side of A LOT of nurses! In my 8 years, I can honestly say that there were maybe only 2 that I can remember that I felt weren't in the right profession....the rest WERE AWESOME! Every nurse I know and currently work with, LOVE and CARE for their patients very much. It's not like they went to a weekend class to get their nursing license and then got a job, they all had to endure 2-4 years of grueling hard work ! Nurses are wonderful and without them who would take care of us when we're sick? Doctors CAN NOT live or function without nurses! We are all human:)  =

hi i stumbled across this site when i typed in nurses forum? LOL
i work in aged care and love it! i have the same problem as dania in that i get attached to alot of patients. i hve been pregnant while working but as im in a low risk area i felt quite safe by just keeping up the normal health and safety recommendations. i havent come across a nurse who wasnt dedication and loved their job, im sure theres some out there, but i havent met any.  =

I could tell you many stories about dum nurses! Especially those who went into nursing after they lost their jobs at the local car manufacturing plant. They go into nursing because of the money.  =

Nurses is a great compassionate occupation. Although, there are many down falls. I have hurt my back in 2002, then hurt my knee on the job in 2004. Turns out work comp has screwed me over literally. Now I can't get any job because I can't be on my feet alot and work comp don't want to pay up.  =

I love taking care of people. I feel like I really have a purpose in life and great satisfaction from it. As Lizzi, where I last worked, I could say that there were probably about 2 nurses plus myself that was dedicated and not sneaky with care. The other 10 nurses==Fire them please.  =

As a L.P.N. I have worked at a skilled nursing facility for 3 and a half years. I agreed to work 3 12 hour shifts per week. My shift is 6:30 p.m.-7a.m. I also work every other weekend. As of Oct.14th our R.n. supervisor resigned and they are not filling her position.
As a result, all nurses, day shift and night shift, are expected to take on extra resposibilites of weekend call. Its all weekend starting Friday at 630p.m. through Sunday 12 a.m. This involves 53 and a hald hours of waiting to be called for day and night shift, with no pay for being "on call". If called in and work a 12 hour shift i will be payed time and a half.
Any nurses that dont take call will be fired. My question is can they do that? Do i have to agree to that? If I dont, i would need to find another job and i would need unemployment. I dont want to quit my job but I feel bullied. This is not what I agreed to but, what options are there?  =

I am an Aide, and a nursing student getting ready to graduate. One of my instructors has an article that shows that c-diff is known to cause miscarriage. She only told me this because I am pregnant.  =

I was a nurse for about 13 years before coming home to take care of my children. I did neonatal ICU mostly and through my second pregnancy. That did not scare me as bad, because you had the Moms health history to go by. When I was preg with my first though, I was Terrified!! There were some old timers that did not think I should be exempt from isolation patients because of my condition!! Then there was what you didn't know....c-diff, flu, cmv, aids, hepatitis......
Yes, I was terrified!  =

I worked in the ICU when I was pregnant with my daughter. My bigest problem was xray coming in and snapping a film before I got out of the room. The manager tried to keep me from having the more virulent pts on my shift but in todays world that is sometimes hard. I got used to wearing my mask (I joked I was training for surgery). I got through that pregnacy fine. With my second I was working in pediatrics and managed to catch chicken pox at 32 weeks....that was fun! Both my kids are fine. Just use extra precautions and good luck!  =
