A perfectly healthy baby boy! Or girl. Well, we had the ultrasound last monday. Baby was incredibly active... rolling, sommersaults, waving, kicking. We think we even saw some thumb sucking! It was really cool. However, when it came time for a peek between the legs, Baby had sat down behind my pelvis and wouldn't budge! Glimpses through the rest of the ultrasound hinted at a boy... but we could have been seeing the umbilical cord, too. Never did get a close enough look. The doc gave us an 80% chance that it's a boy. Personally I raise that percentage up a few points cuz baby was so incredibly obstinate and stubborn that it HAS to be a boy, right! :-)
However, we did manage to get a good look at the organs and spine... which was the reason for this ultrasound. You see, diabetes can cause alot of defects in development, particularly to the heart and spine. So... of what could be seen, everything looks perfect. Of course, everytime they tried to get a picture of the heart, Baby would move and arm and shadow it! And they couldn't see the very bottom of the spine cuz, as noted before, Baby decided to squat down at the bottom of the uterus and not move. But what was seen, whether or not they got still pictures, looked perfectly healthy. And that was way more important than finding out boy or girl!
We go back again in January to do it all again. Hopefully this time Baby will be a bit more coopertive and alot less shy about showing off his (or her) parts! :-)
The three new pics (all black and white ultrasounds) are from this visit. This was the 20th week of pregnancy -- the halfway point! Yay! |
Quad Screen Oh wow! It has been a long time since I updated this! There really hasn't been much to write about... the nausea is gone at least. We got the results back from the quad screen (a blood test to let us know if there's increased risk of genetic problems like down syndrome or spina bifida). That came back negative (which means almost no chance that the baby has these. Yay! One more step towards a healthy baby.
I am going to be going to Duluth next month in order to get a "high resolution" ultrasound. With this they will be able to look at the baby's heart and organs to make sure that everything is developing normally. Doc wants this higher resolution ultrasound cuz of the added risks with me being diabetic. But so far everything is going well! |
