Baby has arrived!

Week 24
This Friday, Sophia and I will have completed the 24th week of pregnancy- That's six months!  Time sure does go by quickly.  According to the What to Expect web site, this is what is going on with Sophia this week:

Your baby weighs more than a pound and a half right now and sports a crown-to-rump length of about eight and a half inches (standard letter size!).

Wondering what (and who) your baby will look like?  If you had a baby cam, you'd almost be able to tell by now.  That beautiful face (though still tiny) is almost fully formed.  What's still missing from the picture is the fat that will be piled on under baby's skin.  Until those fat deposits are made, that very tender skin is still very transparent, which means a close look would let you see clear through to all the organs, bones, and blood vessels. Fortunately, that see-through look won't last much longer. Babies at this point are gaining about six ounces each week — with much of that gain coming from fat, in addition to growing organs, bones, and muscle.

What's been playing on your little rocker's stereo system these days?  All kinds of sounds: from air exhaling from your lungs (deep breath now), those gastric gurgles produced by your stomach and intestines, your voice and your partner's (which your baby will be able to recognize at birth), and even very loud sounds such as honking horns, barking dogs, or a wailing fire truck.

Already Daddy's Little Girl
Usually, when Dean feels Sophia it is because she's kicking pretty well and I tell him (or just grab his hand) to feel for her.  Last night, however, Dean just randomly put his hand on my belly and then she started kicking.  I told him that she started kicking because she knew that Daddy was there.

He's also able to feel her movements much better now. I used to say "now" every time she kicked and Dean would say whether or not he felt her (most of the time not).  This time though, Dean was the one asking me if it was her moving and he got it every time.  What is funny is that she doesn't seem to be kicking any harder.  Maybe I'm just getting used to her movements.

I'm also starting to sing some lullabies to Sophia.  Not really lullabies I guess, but I think they are songs for a baby (who wants to sing about babies falling out of trees anyway?).  I sing "Blackbird" by the Beatles and "The Wind" and "Moonshadow" by Cat Stevens.  Dean thinks I should throw in some female artists' songs too.  Maybe I'll start singing some Ani songs to her! :)  I also sing some "daytime" songs. I sing "Bushel and a Peck" that I remember Grandmother singing to me (I just found out there are like 3 or 4 verses in this song!) and I sing "Skinamarinky Dinky Dink" that I remember from the Elephant Show.  I used to sing both of these songs to Thomas when he was just a baby and I remember him liking the songs so I hope that Sophia will like them too.

There's no use hiding it...
I definitely look pregnant now. I'll have to get Dean to take some more pictures to post.  I'm not so pregnant looking that strangers stop me or try to rub my belly, but I can definitely tell and that gives me some comfort.  My guess is this is the only time in my life that I will be anxious for my belly to get bigger!

On another note, I have been wondering lately about the tradition of the baby shower. I was reading that a friend of the mother-to-be (not a relative) is supposed to throw it.  That seems crazy, wouldn't a grandmother-to-be be one of the people to host a baby shower?  It also seems selfish for parents of means to expect someone else to spend all the time and money on a shower for their baby, yet it is uncouth for the parents to throw the shower.  I just don't understand.  Would there be people who would think Dean and I are scandalous for throwing our own couples shower (which we had been thinking of doing)?

What do you think-- Is the traditional etiquette of baby showers  outdated?

Week 22
According to various web sites with information about pregnancy, Sophia now weighs about one pound!  She also looks like a smaller version of what we will meet when she arrives in April.  I guess that means she doesn't look like Skelator Baby anymore (see ultrasound photos). :)

Sophia's brain has also entered a stage of rapid growth.  Her organs are also becoming more specialized and her senses are further developing. Personally, I know that Sophia is very active and strong.  I feel her moving around, kicking and punching quite a bit!
