Growing baby Everyone says that once you have a baby, you dont have time for anything else. And as you can see, I haven't had time to update everyone on her progress. She's now 5 1/2 weeks old and has changed so much since she was born! She's already started outgrowing some clothes! We went to the doctor a couple of days ago, and she weighed 10 lbs 10 oz. She's growing fast!! We also had her one month portraits taken (and spent more than Homer wanted to...). We woke her up when we got there, and she said it was time to eat even though it was time for our picture appointment. So between shoots, Homer held the bottle, I held the burp cloth and we would count to 3, pull out the bottle, I'd wipe, and the lady would shoot a picture before she had time to start crying. haha. It was crazy! So in one of the pictures we ordered, there is milk dribbling down her chin. So cute! I'll post the pictures when I get back to B'ham (we're in Dothan with Homers family this week). Luckily, she's kept her full head of hair. I think it's starting to thin a little from her laying on it, but it's not as bad as it could be. We read the book "On Becoming Babywise" that a new mom recommended for me. It's a schedule of feeding, awake time, and nap time every 3 hours. We started it while we were in NC and it worked pretty well, but then when we got back to AL we didn't do the schedule as much and she wouldn't go back to sleep during hte night. So we've started it again and last night was good. She's waking up about once during the night and then early in the morning (5 or 6). So it's getting better at least. Hopefully she'll be sleeping longer by the end of the month when med school starts. She's starting to hold her head up and is getting stronger. She's also starting to look at things (and us) and noticing the world. She still stares off in space and stares at the strangest things (like the side of her pack & play). But she LOVES looking at herself in the mirror. She just smiles at herself. And then she'll even notice us in the mirror and follow us with her eyes. She's really started smiling at me when I talk to her over this past week. The 3 of us are really getting used to one another and Homer and I have learned her cries pretty well now. She's doing great with breastfeeding, although I have to use a plastic nipple shield--but it protects me and she likes it so its not so bad. And she takes the bottle and paci great too. Since we've been on the road a lot, I usually just pump and we bottle feed it to her. But she'll get so hungry sometimes that we have to give her some formula to keep her satisfied. But she doesnt' mind and while I'd rather her drink breastmilk, I'm fine with her having some formula when we need it. Well, I need to finish getting ready for the day and I know I've been pushing my luck already with her (she's napping on my chest adn I know the longer I wait, the more likely she is to wake up). Sorry its been so long for the update, but things have been crazy with her and Homer and now we're starting to pack. |
