Hi there ... you'd posted a question in my journal re: drug-free delivery. You are right, there are relatively few drug-free deliveries these days, I think for good reason! I had an epidural, and will do so again for my next delivery (if I don't go so fast that I miss my chance). In my case, because Landon was coming so quickly and had his cord around his neck (which was causing his heartrate to slow down dangerously as he was moving through the birth canal), the epidural likely slowed my labour down enough for Landon could stretch the cord enough to come out 100% healthy. Of course, we didn't know this when I requested the epidural, but in the end is was a very good thing.
Before knowing this, my labour advanced much quicker than I anticipated it would, and I was not able to keep myself relaxed enough to breathe through many, if any, contractions (once I hit active labour). I was expecting much longer labour, with a period of time for me to adjust to the pains of labour. But that didn't happen. By the time I was in the hospital, I was 6 cm dialated, with only about 30 - 40 seconds between 1 1/2 - 2 minute long contractions. And I continued to dilate quickly. So the pain relief was very welcomed to me.
In any case, don't worry too much about if you do or don't get pain relief. I was determined to go as long as possible without drugs, and I am proud of how well we did. There were no lingering effects from the epidural for me, and with the epidural there are no effects on baby (it affects your nerves, not your bloodstream). You will do absolutely wonderfully -- which I'm sure everyone has told you already. It's hard to have that confidence when heading into the unknown land of labour for the first time -- but you will do everything it takes to get your little one out and healthy when the time comes.
Good luck!!

I love helping in the preparation for Joey's arrival and this Gramma can't wait. Well, I guess I'll have to be patient won't I? He'll make his debut when he's good and ready and you both are doing a great job getting ready for your little guy. He will feel cozy and homey in his special nursery you're putting so much love into. Love to you both......Mom/Gramma
p.s. Shell, you "still have it"

Hi
Hope you had a very happy birthday! So, I was wondering how much ice cream you are eating? Ice cream is my absolute weakness and I've been trying to cut down, but it just tastes so good! I felt relieft when I read your blog and realized I am not the only ice cream fanatic!
