Pregnancy Reflections

After Birth

  You were born on:
Sunday, June 4, 2006 at 12:19 PM

  You weighed:
8 lbs, 10 oz.

  And your length was:
20.5 inches long

After much thought, you were named:
Jacob Graham Richard Sisler

The first thing I thought when I saw you was:
How beautiful you were, and how happy that you were safe, and that "you have sideburns just like your dad" (I was a little out of it from the anesthesia! I don't even remember saying that)

The hardest part of the delivery experience was:
Having an emergency C-section, not being able to have Daddy in the delivery room with me when you were born.

The easiest part of the delivery experience was:
Knowing that I was in labor, that I had a job to do - breathing through contractions, focusing on the birth with Daddy by my side.

What surprised me most about the delivery experience was:
How quickly everything moved in the emegergent situation. The doctors, nurses and hospital staff were very professional & calm.

This is what happened the day you were born:
My water broke at 3:00 AM. I got up, woke Daddy, and took a shower. Daddy was nervous; I told him things to bring me and to do, like pack up the rest of the bags and load things into the car. We had already called the doctor, who told us to take our time, get some breakfast & go to the hospital. We went through the drive thru at McDonalds (I was NOT hungry!) and ordered food, which they got all wrong, but it's a funny story to tell! I was calling people all the way there, because Daddy was concentrating on driving due to the darkness and rain. It was a cool morning! I called Grandma & Grandpa Steinhelper first, then we called Grandma & Grandpa Sisler next (who were 4 hours away up north), I called Uncle Jamie & Aunt Steph, Uncle Chris & Aunt Liz, Uncle Rick, Heidi & Pete, and Amanda & Andy. It was fun to talk to all of them while breathing thru contractions (then 3-4 minutes apart). We got to the hospital, and went to triage. Daddy had to give my information to admitting, so he was downstairs for a little bit w/o me. He finally came up to be with me. Grandma & Grandpa Stein joined us around 4:45 AM. We were moved a little later to Labor & Delivery. I was started on antibiotics b/c I was positive for Group B Strep. They burned while going into my hand!! But somehow took my mind off of the contractions. My contractions slowed down & became further apart, so I was started on a Pitocin drip. Things sped up, but I remained dialated at 2 cm. We were on the monitor for contractions & Baby's heartrate. Baby's heartrate was dropping and came back up for a little while. The L & D nurse (Liz, she was amazing!) hooked up a monitor to the Baby's scalp to further monitor him. Baby's heartrate continue to dip, further and further (into the 50s and 60s - it's supposed to be 120-160) and then it was not coming up. They had me change positions from side to side, then onto all fours, to no avail. Liz came back in and told Grandma Stein and Daddy that "things were about to move very fast" - and that they did. At 12:08 PM, I was wheeled out of the room into the O.R. for an emergency C-Section. I was given general anesthesia (knocked out) and Daddy couldn't be there with us. I remember being scared about the Baby - and sorry that Daddy couldn't be there. I know he wanted to be so badly! Grandma Stein stayed and prayed with and over Daddy, even a wonderful cleaning woman was passing the room, and said to them, "This baby doesn't belong to the evil one". Jacob was born in 11 minutes, getting knicked on his head on the way out. Nothing that required more than steri-strips, and healed nicely! The next thing I recall is waking up in recovery, with a LOT of pain. Liz brought Daddy back to see me, and we breathed through the pain just like they were contractions. Daddy said "It's a BOY!", I remember crying and feeling so happy that you were safe. I whispered to Daddy (b/c my throat hurt so bad from the tube) "Jacob" because we knew that was your name! Daddy got to hold you over me for me to see you, you were so beautiful and handsome! I said "He has sideburns, just like his Daddy". Everyone got a kick out of that. By then, the grandparents had been informed that everyone was safe and you were a boy. Daddy withheld your name, so that I could share that with everyone too. That was awesome! Jacob was given his first bath in front of Daddy & the grandparents, which is uncommon for C-section babies; they broke a lot of rules for us - we loved all of the hospital staff!! I was then taken to my post-partum room (a couple of hours post-birth) and we announced his name to the grandparents. They all cried! They enjoyed holding him, kissing him, cuddling him, and sharing in the joy & blessings of the day - Pentacost Sunday. We had visitors: Jamie, Steph, Taylor, Karinne, Liz, Chris, Hannah & Sophie, and of course the grandparents still. They were all excited that you were a BOY and loved your name! I was still pretty out of it from the surgery and pain meds, I don't remember half of the conversations that I had with people. I remember Daddy's brothers (your uncles) being so amazed & proud that he was a father. Daddy & I kept looking at each other, saying "I can't believe he's ours!" What a wonderful, amazing, and blessed day. God has His had on the entire situation. WE ARE SO BLESSED!

The big world events of the day were:
I have no idea - have to look it up!

What I can't wait to do with you:
Hold you, snuggle you, love you, take you to ball games, teach you about Jesus, share you with family & friends, see you with you Daddy, have my love grow for you eveyr minute!
