Carlie, I just wanted to drop you a note to say that I am sorry you are not going to be able to have a home birth. I can understand how you feel to have your plans change and be afraid of not getting the birth you desire. I am too high risk of a patient to have a home birth but I have to say that I have been able to have 2 (my last 2) very awesome natural births at a hospital despite the fact they did require some monitoring that I wasn’t too happy about. If you haven't already, can you tour the hospital and find out what their policies are in addition to the doctor's "take" on things? I have a midwife who delivers me and she is able to "bend" the rules quite a bit and it has been an acceptable compromise. I hope the doctor you speak of will be understanding to your needs as well. If not, is there a midwife with delivery privileges at the hospital? Sometimes things are just beyond our control and happen for reasons we just can't understand at the moment- but never feel like a failure. No one is a failure that at least tries! I can honestly say that after having 5 children I don't feel it is all about the environment or the care you get during deliver (though they do play a part); it is your mindset and attitude towards the approach that makes the difference. Even if things don't go 100% as planned, if you stay positive -you WILL have a positive birth experience. Don't be afraid to stand your ground on your beliefs while keeping in mind some compromise might be necessary and never lose sight of the goal at hand...getting that baby here healthy and safe is what really matters. I wish you the best for a wonderful birth experience.
