Baby has arrived!

2007-09-17  (baby has arrived)
14 weeks

Sage is really reaching these days.  He wants the colourful rings hanging above him, he wants them in his mouth.  Both legs are getting lifted up in unison and the whole little, chubby body is rolling to the side, causing me to think rolling from back to front is well on it's way.

He seems to have discovered his tongue and has spent the last week poking it out and generally playing around with it, very cute.

And during tummy time today he managed to turn his body round 90 degrees, woo hoo!

Go Sage!

Moving next door

Last night Sage moved into his own bedroom.  Our cradle is old fashioned and larger than modern ones and he was able to continue sleeping in it for a long while, but his new found ability to push himself up by arching his back and digging in his feet, and roll himself sideways, meant that I was waking in the wee hours of the morning to the sound of him whinging as he either a. hit his 'noggin on the top of the cradle or b. wedged his face and body up against the side of the cradle... it was time for him to move into the BIG COT.

I prepared by making the cot afresh, moving the mobile, (so I wouldn't have to bend under it when getting him in and out) and returning the change table to it's rightful place in his bedroom.  As night approached I felt a little melancholoy but also excited to see how he went. I put him down at 7:15pm, shut the doors and exited.  I felt kinda nervous wondering he would go without us and more importantly how we would go without him.

Caleb and I retired to bed about 10:30pm. I could not sleep.  The room sounded so quiet without him.  His little cradle was sitting in the corner of the room empty and I couldn't stop wondering if he was ok all the way on the other side of the wall.

I got Caleb to check on him, he was fine.  I tried to sleep.  I got up and checked him myself, still fine.  I tried to sleep.  Around 11:15pm I heard him mummuring, I waited until he got a little louder and then promptly brought him back into our bed for a feed.  15 minutes later he was back in his cot and I drifted off to sleep.

He woke at 3am for a feed.  Went back into his cot. And then I woke at 5:15am to the sounds of him playing and talking to himself in his bedroom.  Caleb went and brought him back into our bed.  We said good morning, wrapped him, popped in his dummy and he drifted back to sleep between us until 7:00am.

Not bad, not too traumatic at all. I'm happy with that for our first attempt apart.

And I, coincidently, slept great in the end.

Happy 3 Month Birthday

Sage has reached the 3 month mark.  No longer is he in the 0-3 month category that I see printed on all sorts of baby items, he is now in the 3-6 month category!  We took him to Babies Galore today, the store I worked at briefly while pregnant with him in the third trimester, and bought him a new, BIG, deep bath, a jolly jumper and his high chair!!

We set up the jolly jumper when we got home and popped our little man in it, he looked adorable!  Being able to stand back and look at him I realised he still is a little tyke!  His chubby little legs were doing adorable stances, he didn't do a whole lot of bouncing but seemed to enjoy the change in perspective and new found mobility.  He then became entranced in the set of rings I had hung from the side of the harness and attempted to put one of the rings in his mouth to no avail for 5 minutes or so.

An hour ago we were lounging on the couch together and I was 'experiementing' with his hand and eye coordination.  He was eagerly sucking his dummy but continuously dropping/spitting it out, so I placed it in front of his face, his eyes lit up and slowly but surely his chubby little fingers, slick with saliva and furry with random fluff, grappled and found the dummy and grasped on.  I then let go and watched him attempt to put the dummy in his mouth.  He was concentrating hard, but keep missing his open mouth.  I led his hand to his mouth, he sucked ferociously when the rubber teat hit his tongue, then it fell out again.. we tried again.  With the dummy firmly in his hand he attempted to get it to his mouth and this time succeeded!  He had a few goes and each time eventually found his mouth, on his last attempt he couldn't seem to make contact and quickly grunted/whinged his frustration!  Ah ha!  This little boy truly is my son!  I was wondering whether he would get annoyed that he couldn't get it in his mouth, I know I would, and sure enough he did!

He makes me laugh a hundred times a day.  The sounds he is now making, his exclamations of joy, they are soo adorable and captivating.  Yesterday he chatted ALL DAY LONG with Caleb and I and first thing this morning I manged to get him laughing out loud again and again.

Everyone says the 3 month mark is the 'magical' milestone you want to reach, where it suddenly all becomes easier.  I feel that this happened with Sage a few weeks ago, when he started finding his voice.  He began telling us what he wanted with sounds rather than cries, and now only uses his cry when he is overtired or not responded to quickly enough.

I am feeling increasingly more confident with taking him out in public.  In the first couple of months I was always concerned he would have a public meltdown that I didn't know how to stop but these days I can usually respond and soothe him without a whole lot of fuss like before.

He is the chubbiest, strongest little baby I have ever known.  I bought him a true baby outfirt on Saturday.  White baby pull over pants, the sort that fit round the nappy and have a slighly padded bum, with a white tank top, fitted, both with silver stars printed on them.  I thought he would look like a sweet, little baby in it.. I was wrong!  He looked like a real little boy baby dressed in an outfit that didn't suit him!  He looks like such a little boy he needs to be in jeans, t's, overalls and other obvious boy outfits.. so funny!

His eyes are still blue and his fluffy golden, brown hair seems to be filling in each night.  He is completely captivated by his hands and always wants them in his mouth.  He has started biting my nipples while feeding, not sure why.  I say stop and try and get across that it is something he shouldn't be doing, but he doesn't pay a whole lot of attention = eeekkk.. wonder how it is going to go when he has teeth!

At the moment his is curled up across the front of my belly, suspended by a sling, snoring softly away.  Delicious!

I don't think I have ever experienced as much pure joy as I am consistently these days!

Beautiful baby Sage, Happy 3 Months!

These Days...

Sage is inching towards the 3 month mark.  Though one part of me is a little sad the other part is excited because it means I get to see more of my little boy's personality, which coincidently seems to be HUGE!

My goodness.  He is not shy in letting me know what he doesn't like and is a regular chatter box.

Yesterday morning when he woke up Caleb and I were saying 'hi' to him and he promptly (and purely coincidently I am sure) said loudy, 'aye!'.  We were a little shocked and couldn't help raising our eyebrows at each other and laughing.

I am continuing to solidfy our daily routine.  It is a nice feeling.  A night sleep is going well, Sage puts in a 5 or 6 hour stint and then wakes for 2 feeds - 1:30am and 5:00am, though he doesn't eat much at 5:00am so I am considering phasing it out and seeing how he responds to that.

I am considering baby swim classes, you can take them from when they are 3 months old, and the weather will surely start getting hotter and I can't imagine anything cuter than seeing my little chubber in swimming trunks!!!

We have joined a Mother's Group.  There are 7 baby girls and 1 boy, Sage!  He is the youngest but the biggest! heheh.  We have only had one meeting but I found it really enjoyable.

Well, that is all I have time to write now... better make the most of my 'free time' while he naps and do ...something.
