As our family closes out our first year as a foursome, Ari and I have noticed some clear personality traits exhibited by our BTs.There is one particular difference between the two that has come to the forefront of our attention. We have noticed that Julia and Marayla have each achieved certain milestones ahead of the other. For example, Julia is crawling all over the place on her hands and knees, while Marayla has yet to lift her right arm from the “wounded soldier” position. On the other hand, Marayla has a larger vocabulary than Julia and just the other night she clapped her hands after Mommy showed her.Last weekend, a whole bunch of us watched as Julia climbed up the step into the dining room; she didn’t give it any thought – she simply did it after numerous failed attempts.Julia is the Doer.Marayla shows us so many different facial expressions, most of which involve her eyebrows, telling us that there’s a lot on her mind. She will typically give most of her actions a good deal of thought before going forward.Marayla is the Thinker. Now, of course, we believe our daughters are both highly intelligent (as most parents do), and both are physically adept. We just find it fitting that Marayla is more perceptive and needs a little bit more TLC, while Julia has the bumps on her head from trying to escape the living room.Eventually, they will be able to put their skills together, and put them to use.The brains and the muscle.

Our First Christmas - JEM Ray We traveled so long to get to Aunt Kara's house, it felt like days in the car. Once we got there, we forgot that long ride and hugged all of our family. It was our first time with the (almost) whole Matthews family--Grandma and Grandpa, Aunt Kara, Uncle David, Uncle Daniel, cousins Sydney and Rachel, great aunts and uncles, lots of extended family and little doggies just our size. Our family was so surprised how content we were just hanging out, and even though Grandma and Aunt Kara didn't want the dogs (well, mostly Elaine) not to lick us up and down (and in our mouths) we LOVED it! We had a slumber party every night with Mommy and Daddy, as we were all in one room and we made sure to keep them up through the night. But we were lucky to have Uncle David to comfort us when we couldn't sleep, that way Mommy and Daddy could play games (Daddy won three different versions of Scene It). On Christmas Eve we went to a local Chinese restaurant to keep with the tradition set years and years ago when Daddy was just a boy. We even sat where they all used to, right next to the fish tank, which we loved so much! We threw all our toys on the floor and drank from cold spoons dipped in ice water. Later that night we went to our Great Aunt and Uncle's house for a party and met more family, including our Great Grandmother. Next morning we woke up to a pile of presents from Santa! We got lots of cute clothes and a fun rocking horse that turns
into a ride on toy. The next morning we sadly left our family but we will see them again soon. Aunt Kara and Uncle David have a big in-ground pool which we plan on swimming in this summer! New Jersey is really not that far away.
While Mommy was typing this for us, I (Julia), decided to rip an arrow key off the keyboard - yay!

Being a parent - Arianne You are never fully prepared to be a parent and once you get things down your children change!

What parents do on New Year's Eve - Arianne Last night, after Ryan came home from work, we decided to get down and dirty for New Year's Eve. We gathered up our 100 odd-piece alphabet mat (used to keep the girls cushioned on the hardwoods and spit up off the floor) and decided to clean each and every section! YAY! Some mat squares have 4 pieces (ie B) and we have 3 full mats of ABCs and 123s. That only took us until 11pm. In between disinfecting and rinsing we also cleaned each and every toy and hard book that the girls play with. And while everything was up off the floor we scrubbed that too. We both had to keep reminding each other it was New Year's Eve. As we crawled into bed it turned 2008, we gave each other a kiss and slept like babies.
This morning, I have already cleaned 3 bathrooms and dusted. I think I am trying to clean away 2007 and leave all the dirt behind. It was a long year-definitely the longest of my life. I am looking forward to a little more time for myself in 2008, as we are more settled into our house and we have done a lot of visiting with family and friends--plus it's a leap year and who couldn't use just one extra day.
Happy New Year to all of you that keep up with our family and thank you for all that you have done for us in 2007--we could not have done all that we did without each and every one of you. I truly mean that.
