Baby has arrived!

Week eight

Today Meighen is eight weeks old. When I got back from Mom’s last week I thought we should transition Meg from our room at night to her nursery. It took no effort and has been working out great! It’s right across from our room and if we leave the two doors open we can still hear her. We don’t hear every coo, gurgle and babble (which is good cause it would keep me up at night) but we hear her cry when she really needs us. As nice as it was having her close to us it’s time we take our room back. I’ve started a night time routine where we head up to her room around 11 pm and I rock her in the glider while she has her last bottle. When she starts to drift off I put her in the crib and chill in the glider till I think she’s seriously asleep. The last few nights she’s been up and down for the first couple hours but then she finally dozes off for at least seven hours. She then gets up for another bottle and goes back to sleep for between two and three hours. Her room is so comfortable and cozy. Sometimes I wish there was a bed in there for me!

Another first this week is using the swing. She still seems a bit small for it but it has lots of straps to keep her snug. The main reason it came down to the living room was because I need the space in the nursery for a few other things. She really seems to like it. She’s mesmerized by the mobile that hangs above it and I think she likes the oceans sounds that come with it.

We have a busy week coming up. Tomorrow night we’re going to Ben’s brother’s place so Meggy can visit with her m’oncle, auntie and cousins. They have two girls and have a bunch of clothes that the youngest has grown out of (she’s two) that we’ve been offered. Tuesday one of my old co-workers is coming by to visit. A few months ago she sent the most wonderful outfits for Meighen as a baby gift. My fav was the little pink pants and shirt with the bunny tail on the bum… tee hee. Thursday Ben and I have an appointment downtown and Friday Meggy and I have our doctors appointment. It’s my six week post-partum check up (a few weeks late) and Meg’s two month appointment complete with vaccinations. My poor baby’s going to get poked. I’m not looking forward to that. Here’s hoping we can calm her down quickly on the way out without people thinking we’re torturing or neglecting her. Right after that we’re stopping by the house to grab Sprocket and we’re heading to my folks for the long weekend. It should be nice and restful if Meighen cooperates. Grandma’s awesome and takes the night shift so Ben and I can get some sleep. We’re hoping to take in a movie while we’re there as well as daily swims. We’re also going to swing by this really great second hand baby store that has everything you could imagine at great prices. While we love the Snap-and-Go stroller frame for quick jaunts and downtown trips I want to get a more robust stroller for the winter and longer walks, one she can lay down in. I saw them there for under $100 and some of them look brand new! It will be a nice way to end the summer.

Seven weeks old...

Yesterday Meighen turned seven weeks old. I can’t believe I’m a mom! I’ve gone from doing my own thing to wiping little fingers, mouth and tushie. She’s started smiling and it makes the late nights and early mornings worth it. When she was born and for a short time after bringing her home I used to avoid saying her name, not intentionally but it just didn’t sound right, like she was a stranger. Now it’s an everyday word like “Ben” or “Sprocket”.

We had a busy week last week. After a couple long nights with Meg and my bit of food poisoning I went to my Mom’s to get some rest and help with the baby. We did some shopping, got a haircut and spent some time in the pool and hot tub. Since it’s been six weeks and my incision is looking really good I made sure to take advantage. Saturday morning we did breakfast with Ben’s friend Jay and his wife. They’re really great with Meg and we had a fantastic visit, so good we had to leave because they were closing… ha! Meighen also went to her first wedding reception on Saturday. She was pretty good. I wore her in the sling and she slept for most of the evening. Sunday we went to Newmarket to visit with my cousin Kelley again while Ben took her son to a movie. After that it was off to Brampton for dinner with Ben's Aunt/Uncle. Their little girl (3 yrs old) just loves Meggy already and was really sweet with her. She kept wanting to hold her and smothered her in kisses. She also brought Meighen blankets and asked if she could sleep with the baby that night. It was very cute.

As I mentioned, Meighen has started smiling big time! I put up some great pictures I got coming home from Mom’s. There’s also a great frown shot. Talk about a mood swing. I think she was getting frustrated with the camera.

This week I’m committed to stimulating Meg. I get weekly updates from Babycenter.com and I just noticed they have a “this week’s activity”. Turns out I’m already doing some of them but they have some great suggestions.

Meggy’s waking up so I’ve got to get going. Just one last thing… guess who slept through the night Saturday night?? That’s right! She passed out at 10:30 pm and other than putting the dum-dum back in her mouth mid night she was out till 8:30 am Sunday. She takes after her Mommy… loves to sleep. I don’t think this is going to be a regular thing just yet but I’m thrilled she did it regardless.

Six weeks old...

Today Meighen is six weeks old. Time is flying by. It's also the middle of summer and I've been off work for two months. It feels like I'll be back to work in no time. Then again, I still have an entire winter to get through (which will be waaay easier since I don't have to go out in it).

Meggy is getting the hang of smiling. It's happening more often and for longer amounts of time. It totally melts my heart. She's also starting to make new noises. They surprise me everytime!

We had a great weekend with her. Friday we went shopping with Pere and went back to his place for dinner. She loves to be outside and enjoyed sitting on his balcony with the wind blowing in her hair. She's too young to appreciate the view overlooking the city, hopefully one day she will. Saturday it was just me and Meg since it was Ben's turn to take in a movie. He spent the day chilling with my sister. Today my cousin Kelley came over and spent some time with Meggy and filled us in on life with two teenagers... should be interesting when our time comes.

Me and Meg have a busy week ahead of us. Monday we have our prenatal reunion and will get to meet all the other babies from our class. Tuesday we might swing by my old company and meet some former colleagues. Wednesday Grandma and Grandpa might come over. Thursday we're off to my current company for lunch with a few people and Saturday we have a wedding to go to. My Mom's been wanting me and Meg to come visit for a few days during the week so I'll try to make that happen next week. All three of us are scheduled to go over the September long weekend but it'd be nice to get out there for a few days before hand.

We picked up our professional photos and they turned out ok. I've already divided up all the pics amungst the family and they're ready to be mailed tomorrow. Everyone just received the birth announcements and already they're getting more baby pics!! heh.

Back from the long weekend...

This was certainly a better long weekend than the last one. The last long weekend I was in the hospital having Meighen. Meggy was the best part of the weekend but still, being in the hospital sucked!

The cottage with my girlfriend was great. The weather was crappy but we still had a nice visit. I can't believe how big her little boy has gotten. He's now seven months but the size of a one year old. I can't imagine Meggy being that big one day. Travelling with baby is certainly an adventure. We borrowed my Mom's travel bassinet and we had everything we'd need but it's still not the same as being at home. Meg slept well though and was a great little girl the whole time. Everyone thought she was adorable.   We spent Sunday night at my folks and Grandma took the night shift so we could sleep. I always feel bad about it when she does that. I know she's happy to and wants to give us a break as well as take care of Meg but I feel it's my responsibility and I'm somehow shrugging off my duties on her. I know it's not the case but I still feel bad. I'm hoping to get a visit in for a night or two before the next long weekend in September when we're going back up for a few days.

Today I finally got Meggy's hand prints done for her baby album. Ben and I were able to get her feet done the second week she was home and tried her hands but dipping baby hands in paint and getting them to stamp a piece of paper is more challenging than you'd think. I know she's five weeks old now but at least they're done.

I can't believe how fast Meg's development is progressing. She can hold her head up for almost a minute on her own and she's even trying to roll over when on her play mat. She prefers to sleep on her side but we don't let her do that without supervision, can't have her roll onto her tummy in her sleep just yet. Tummy time is going well, I think the colours on the play mat keep her interest and make it easier on us, very little fussing. The soft spot on her head has almost closed over too! My babycenter.com weekly email said she may start to smile on her own soon. I may have had a first smile this morning! I was changing her diaper (she now loves her change table and looking up at all her colourful dresses that hang above it) and when we were done I tickled her belly and hoochy-cooed her.... that's when it happened, she smiled! It may not have been intentional just yet but it was well placed indeed.
