10/13/07 - Hospital Tour We toured the labor/delivery and mother baby unit of Morristown Memorial today. Boy was that interesting. It took us a while to get security clearance to even get onto the unit (which reminds me, all visitor must have a state photo ID on them to get on the unit to visit). Once we got into the unit they showed us a labor and delivery room first. The rooms were nice and had all the amenities including showers. Only the fathers or "support people" are allowed in this room, the babies siblings would be allowed in after delivery but all other family must wait until we are move to the mother/baby unit to visit later (could take a couple hours). No cell phones are allowed to be used on this unit either, so we won't be able to share news with people until we are moved also (or if Matty runs outside or we pay for the phone which we have been informed is not cheap).
They have not yet completed the labor/birthing tubs and are not sure if they will be done in time (BUMMER!), they did say they have a portable tub we have the option of using if someone is not already using it.
There is a nursery but the babies do not stay in there unless the parents ask. We will most likey be requesting the baby "rooms-in" with us the entire stay.
After the baby is born they attach a "Baby LoJack" to the umbilical cord (yes I am serious). It is equiped with GPS and actually locks the doors on the unit and hopital if someone tries to leave with the baby. The woman told us it will also trip alarms and it would look like the equivalent of a swat team raid. It almost makes you want to "accidentally" set off the alarms to see it all.
The mother/baby rooms are brand new and they look it. They all have flat screen tvs in them and a sleeper couch for the husbands. Visiting hours are from 12-8pm and there are no restrictions for visitors over 12 years old. There is even a lounge area with drink and munchies for families to hang out with the new baby.
Things have definitly changed.... more restrictions on visitors, phones, and such, and no more looking at the babies through the glass but more ammenites for the parents. They even offer every new mom a complementary professional massage.
