My labour story When i was pregnant last year, i was really scared of giving birth. I'm a staff nurse and knew all about labour and birth.
It was much better than i thought it would be I went into labour 4 days early. At 3.30 am i turned over in bed and felt a bit wet but didn't really think anything about it but 20 minutes later i felt evcn wetter I thought i'd wet myself!! I jumped out of bed and water was trickling down my legs!. I made it to the bathroom and realised my waters had broken. Waters are clear and have a sweet smell so you know its not urine! I went to lie down on the settee to watch TV. 30 minutes later i had a slight discomfort in my back....i was hoping it wasn't contractions but it was and they came every 1/2 hour to an hour. I didn't wake my husband as it was only 4.30 in the morning. At 7.30 i went to give him the good news and he was delighted. I rang the labour ward and they told me to come in for a checkup. I was examined and they confirmed the waters had broken and i was put on the machine to check the baby and measure the contractions. I stayed there for a couple of hours and was having contractions but they were fine, just niggles in my back, nothing in my stomach.
Went home and was fine at home all day. Went back for a check at 4pm and they were happy for me to go back home. Contractions were coming every 30 minutes and my waters were leaking alot.
Another check at 10pm till midnight and again as my contractions were not sore i was sent home again. As soon as i got home just after midnight the contractions got worse. Its like period pain but it wasn't coming in waves it was pretty much constant. I got some relief from standing over the bath and then i started to have slight bleeding so we went back in. I arrived at 2am and the midwife said they would wait till the morning before they induced me but they got a shock when i was examined. I was already 8 cm dilated !! I had no pain relief until then. I felt really nauseated by then and in quite alot of pain. I was rushed to the delivery suite and given gas and air. It was the best thing ever!
The pain went and i felt like i was drunk! 3 1/2 hours later my son was born at 5.41 am on the 12th November 2006.
I can't believe i managed on gas and air only!!. The hardest bit was the transitional stage when you reach 10cm and feel the pressure of the head when you are ready to push. I felt a bit panicy then but that feeling went away fairly quickly, thank goodness.
I didn't feel the contractions during the pushing. It was very painful to push him out but it was the best feeling in the world when our son was born! We love him so much and can't wait for another baby
