Pregnancy Journal

2008-04-24  (8 weeks)
Unsure of my dates?

So apparently I am supposed to be 8 weeks today. I had a pretty good week 7. I was fairly sick, but with the aid of pink popsicles and peppermint tea, I seem to have overcome it. The last 3 days whatever nausea I had seems to have disappeared, knock on wood.

I don't think I'm really 8 weeks. All of a sudden over night I have just popped up out of nowhere. Like really, I was unsuspecting, and now people are actually asking me if I'm pregnant because it just turned up out of nowhere! And I've been watching what I'm eating too, so I'm not gaining an incredible amount of weight. Its like the weight everywhere else just went to my belly and turned hard and round haha.

So I'm thinking I'm further along. I have an ultrasound booked for July 7th, but I'm going to try and beg my doctor for an earlier one.

People are freaking me out by telling me I have twins. And now, I am concerned. Here are my reasonings as to why I may possibly be having twins:

1. I had a STRONG positive pregnancy test almost a full week before my period was even due. That means increased horomones.

2. The last 2 weeks I have been sick as a dog. Increased nausea seems to be a common sign that you could be carrying multiples.

3. I've been incredibly tired, going to bed at around 9:30 and sleeping 12 hours pretty much every day.

4. I'm carrying HUGE and its all going to my belly, and I'm not eating any more than I ate before I found out I was pregnant. Plus, I'm eating healthier.

5. Apparently, there are twins in my family. I don't know who these twins are, or when they were born, but everyone keeps talking about the twins in my family.

So now I'm stressed out because I do NOT want more than one baby. I just don't. Not at the same time anyway! Argg.

Here is what is going on in week 8.

The following developments also typically occur during the eighth week of pregnancy:

  • The leg buds divide into thigh, leg, and foot units
  • The arm buds divide into hand, arm, elbow, and shoulder units
  • The arms and legs move
  • Cartilage and bones begin to form
  • Eyelids begin to form
  • The ears, upper lip, and tip of the nose become recognizable
  • The tongue begins to develop
  • The intestines grow so long that they start protruding into the umbilical cord
  • Teeth develop under the gums
  • The gonads (testes or ovaries) are forming
  • Nerve fibers connect the olfactory lobe of the brain, laying groundwork for the sense of smell.

I'm posting a belly pic. Even if you don't know who I am, comment and tell me that this is normal/not normal so I can have some peace of mind please haha.

Ob-Gyn Appointment and the 6th week

I am officially 6 weeks pregnant. 6 weeks and 2 days, to be exact.

I went to the Ob-Gyn yesterday for the first time. I'm not sure if I like her or not yet. She is supposed to be very good but she kind of rushed me along like I should already know all of these things. Ahh hello! Its my first time being pregnant! I hate people like that.

So all she did was ask me a bunch of questions about my health and told me what to eat and what not to eat, and what to do if I miscarry (crossing fingers that doesn't happen!). She sent me for blood work and is booking an ultrasound for the week of July 5th. I, for one have a problem with this. 18 weeks!?!? I have to go 18 weeks without seeing or knowing if there is anything wrong with my baby, or how many are actually in there (lets all do a communal prayer for one, people)?? I think that is absolutely insane. ABSOLUTELY insane.

She also changed my due date to December 5th, but I'm still keeping my countdown the way it is because I've had two other doctors, a pregnancy calculator and myself figure out that it is December 3rd. Maybe we're all just incompetent at counting and she's a genius because she's an ob-gyn? Who knows.

So I've had two exams this week already, and neither went very well. I had to tell my prof today that I was pregnant because yesterday I pretty much needed to puke the whole way through the exam. I didn't want to rush out of the classroom out of nowhere and have to explain it to him in front of the class. So that was bad.

Morning sickness/All day sickness HAS set in unfortunately. I've been nausous every second of every day for the last 4 days. But that has NOT detered me from craving everything spicy that I can get my hands on. I thought cravings were a myth because I didn't feel the need to have anything for the first 5 weeks. I would just like to assure all of you out there who feel the same, that I was WRONG. I'm practically eating banana peppers straight out of the jar. I could drink Frank's Hot Sauce at this point.

Oh another thing...this doctor told me that I shouldn't be hungry and an extra glass of milk a day is enough for the baby. Okay, let me tell you something doc. I'm starved. All the time. And I'm not imagining it!!!!

Here is what is going on with baby this week:

WEEK 6:

Your baby is starting to look more and more like a little organic (albeit not quite human) being during pregnancy week 6. Dark spots should be forming where the eyes and nostrils will eventually take shape. There should also be small pits on the sides of the head where the ears will develop, and tiny buds that will form into the arms and legs at roughly 6 weeks pregnant. For several weeks the hands and feet will be connected by a layer of webbing between the fingers and toes. Your baby will start responding to sensory input and start moving all on his own in these next few weeks.

At 6 weeks of pregnancy the heart should now be beating at about 100 to 140 beats per minute and blood will start circulating throughout your baby's body. Your healthcare practitioner may be able to see the beating of the heartbeat during pregnancy week 6 using ultrasound, though it may still be a few weeks before the heartbeat is detectable via a Doppler device.

Did you know that your baby would actually be able to display reflexes in response to touch even by pregnancy 6 weeks? This is because the central nervous system is already developing and linking the muscles in the body with the limbs. You'll learn even more amazing facts as you follow your pregnancy week by week.

2008-04-05  (5 weeks)
Telling the parents and first doctor's apointment.

So I am officially 5 weeks and 3 days pregnant today. This week was a big week for developments in regards to the pregnancy. Adam and I both told our parents and I had my first doctor's appointment.

My parents took it fairly well. I mean, they took it much much better than I expected them to. They were a bit upset at first but they have come around and said that they aren't mad, they just wish it had happened even a few months from now. Their main concern was that I wouldn't be able to graduate.

Adam's mom was not as accomodating, from what I hear. I wasn't there when he told her, but from the vague details I have heard it did not really go well. But that is all we can do. I told my parents that they could either be upset and I'll be pregnant, or they could not be upset and I'll still be pregnant. There isn't a whole lot anyone can do about it except for me, and I most certainly am not doing anything about it!!

So my first doctor's appointment was short and boring. It took all of about 2 minutes. He just told me what I already knew - I'm pregnant and 5 weeks along. He referred me to an ob-gyn who will be taking care of me throughout my pregnancy and also delivering my baby. So that was a development I suppose. I have to go see her on April 10th for my first visit.

I also saw the head of my department this week about getting one of my core requirements subsituted for another one. My issue was that I cannot graduate until I do Political Science 2711, and it won't be offered until January. That, of course will not work for me since I am due in December. He switched it up though, so I get to do a better course instead :)

I bought some clothes from Motherhood today. I know I'm only 5 weeks and it is NOT the baby showing, but I am so incredibly swollen and blown up that my clothes don't fit right anymore :( But I got to go shopping so I'm happy.

Here is what is happening with baby this week:

The changes to your growing embryo are not quite as drastic this week as they've been in the last few weeks. Growth is now largely focused on their little head, which is starting to develop much more rapidly than the rest of their tiny body. This is because their amazing brain is undergoing some very crucial and rapid development in order to effectively regulate their heart rate, blood circulation, and other vital functions. As for the rest of their miniature body, what were simple limb buds last week are limb flippers this week and the tail is more expressed. Amazingly, within a mere five weeks your little miracle is already developing the rudimentary forms of their liver, pancreas, lungs, stomach and nasal pits while their little heart is already increasing its circulation. Your baby is now a whopping 4-6mm in length.

Positive test!

So I took a test on Tuesday. I took it because I had been feeling just a little off since we arrived at my parent's house last Thursday (on the 20th). I wasn't really expecting it to be positive. I really only took it so that it would show up negative and I could ease my mind until my period came. So lo and behold, I take the test and there is a BIG FAT PINK LINE.

Needless to say, I pretty much almost threw up. I rushed Adam into the bedroom and said "Look, two lines". He said "So what does that mean?" and I told him it meant it was positive. That wasn't really a good scene either. He's been sick (he was in the hospital for 10 hours on Monday) and this wasn't exactly what he needed to hear. I think he's scared. I'm incredibly scared too, but at least I know something about pregnancy. He doesn't know ANYTHING about it.

I'm also freaking out because I tested 4 days before my period was even due and it was a STRONG positive. I know loads of people who find out they're pregnant, but they have a really faint line even after they miss their period. So I'm assuming I have a lot of pregnancy horomones floating around in my body, which I am concerned about. I'm not sure if they are supposed to be that strong yet.

So I went to the Doctor and he gave me folic acid. I have another appointment on Wednesday with Dr. Lee at the university so I guess we'll find out what is going on.

According to my calculations, I am 4 weeks and 1 day pregnant, and I am due on December 3rd, 2008.

I'm not sure if I'm excited yet.
