The AFP scare

I am an epileptic and have been on AED since the past seven years. When I learnt that I was pregnant, one of the first things I did was to visit my neurologist and discuss the risks and care to be taken to ensure a normal pregnancy. He told me that I was doing fine but would like to do a sono and AFP test at 14 weeks.

I went ahead and did the tests. When I got the test results I found that the AFP level was out of range. Now, through gathered medical knowledge I was aware that abnormal AFP levels indicate the possibility of birth anamolies. In a near state of panic I called my cousin who's a doctor and read out the results to him. He assured me that AFP is not a full proof test and is only a statistical risk indicator and that my reports did not fall in the high risk category.

Since then I have started developing a confidence that nothing will go wrong for me or my baby and I will have a smooth pregnancy and a normal, healthy child.

When I learnt I was pregnant!

At the turn of the year, I was running a high temperature and had a bad bout of cough and cold. My periods were delayed - it usually happens to me when my body is undergoing any kind of strain. It took two whole weeks to get back to normal. I had to even repeat the course of antibiotics.

After that I started feeling very nauseous. Again, I always used to feel nauseous after a course of antibiotics. So the doc gave me an anti vomit pill. It dint work. On my mom's insistence I got a home pregnancy test kit and did the test. It turned out positive! I was dazed for a few seconds, told me hubby to cross verify the results. He also confirmed it.

I called up my mom and told her about this. Since she just stays a few buildings away, my dad insisted that she visit me. My brother had already left for office though. I called up my mom-in-law to tell her about this.

I had fixed up a gynaec appointment two days later but now that the results were positive, I couldnt wait for the confirmation. So I went ahead and did a lab test. After a five hour impatient wait, I called the lab and got a confirmation on the test.

Two days later, me and my husband visited our gynaec. We had a sonography done and saw the first pictures of our little one :)
