My son is 8 years old and was also diagnosed with ADHD. I am a single mother and know the feeling of hopelessness that you feel constantly. I have tried Concerta, with which he delivered involuntary muscle spasms (that is heartbreaking to watch), and was told that it may become permanent. I stopped the medication immediately. He has been on Stratera 40mg capsule once a day for over a year now and everything has improved. I also supplement him with EYE-Q (Omega 3) capsules daily, which helps stimulate the brain and concentration naturally. His teacher has nothing but praise for him now, and he has settled down a lot. Granted we still have the odd difficult day where he refuses to do anything I ask, but for the most part he is an absolute pleasure!

Have you tried looking at Stratera? It is a non-stimulant that does not work with all cases, but it does not have half of the weird side effects that the others do... At the end of the day it requires lots of love and patience.

I wish you luck.

Just another note: Important to all parents with children suffering from ADD or ADHD... ROUTINE!!! Set one and stick to it like your life depends on it. These children need strict rules that have to be followed. Do not give in to the temper tantrums, screaming, name calling, taunting...that is exactly what they want. Set the ground rules.

OMG!! we need to chat, I am in the same boat, I am 42 yrs old , my son is 8 he takes the daytrana patch, i have a 5 yrold and a 2 yr old, he hurts them all the time. he also has autism, i have him on zoloft for his anger and mood swings. he is home from school today because this week he decided he won't wear his patch anymore and as soon as he gets to school he takes it off so he can't stay in school so now i am waiting til the 9th to see his doctor. i feel like i am going to lose my mind daily, i take meds just to deal with it and it still is hard. but all i can do is keep trying!

The school needs to set up a 504 program, including for the bus. In fact, he should be on a small bus as the reg. bus may be way too stimulating.

It sounds like he's demanding attention--negative attention, and he's getting it. You work so many hours, but you need to get help with his behavior and even more important: YOUR response to it. He sounds like he's very angry, but under it all, probably very sad.

Make him EARN his video games and cartoons with good behavior. Time Out may calm him down as long as he's out of sight and must stay there. Add time if he leaves his chair.

This may help, too: take time to read a book like mine (HYPER HARRY) WITH him. The chapters are short. Read one or two chapters a night. Watch his reaction to all the trouble Harry's in (including being kicked off the bus) and talk with him about siimilarities and differences between his problems and Harry's.

HYPER HARRY is for kids 8-12, and is available for $.99 at Amazon.com/Kindle Store/Hyper Harry.
I'm a former school social worker and member of the CT Task Force on ADHD.
You're in this for the long haul. Help him now or when he's a teen he will have many more problems and so will you.

Good luck. It's not easy, but so much depends on your getting yourself as well as him under control.

If I were you, i'd sent him to an alternative boarding school. it might sound extreme, but you can't do this alone. He needs professional help and this type of school provides that. They give structure for them and the staff are trained for this kind of problem. :)

I have a 4 year that is progressing in his behavior. There is no doubt in my mind that he is ADHD and possibly bipolar because it runs on mother and father's side of the family. He is high risk either way. I have been caring for him from age 2 weeks until now. The doctors don't want to put him on MEDSHARE right now, but he is in a private school where his learning is at kindergarten level. He is not able to stay focused and I receive a bad behavior note everyday.

Any suggestions on getting him MEDSHARE at this age. I have spent the entire weekend with a screaming manic tantrum throwing 4 year old. I need help. I can't do this much longer. I want to put him on a plane back to his mother but she is not in any shape to care for him because of her drug problems. Please help me.

My son was diagnosed back in march of this year, he is 8 years old. I am not a single mom but i sort of am due to my husband travels alot and is only home on the weekends so i kind of understand the frustration of doing it alone. From the time he was born i knew something was a little off but freinds and family would just say he will grow out of it, finally last year i had had enough! i was getting at least 2 phone calls a week from his 2nd grade teacher telling me he wont stay in his seat he wont finish his homework and he talks all the time. My husband didnt want to put him on any meds but i finally took him in to get tested and low and behold my son Is ADHD. I told my husband that since i am the one doing all the hard work when it came to raising our son and he had the easy job of coming home and being the FUN parent that i WAS going to put him on medicine and mainly just to help him focus in school. I cant emagine even have another child. We thought about it and tried for like 2 years when he was 5 but it never happen and i honestly am greatful that i didnt get pregnant because i just wouldnt have the energy or the patience to deal with another one. I will have to say that after reading up on some other parents experiences and how their children are, mine is a handful but not as bad as some of the other childern. He is medication and that has helped alot! Is your son on medication? and if so he may need to get looked at agian and put on something else

My almost 8 yr old diagnosed with ADD and ? conduct disorder recently visited his grandparents for a weeks break over the holidays 9to be honest the break was more for me).
he was up there for 2 days before he caused havoc by lighting 2 small fires in the garage.. that wne out and another in the back of the house that unfotunately didnt go out.
So much for a break for me i went rushing up there and my parents are distraught.
I'm torn between the love and suffering of my parents and the feelings for my son... sometimes I look at him and i think he's evil.
The services here are crap.. I dont know how to help him or what to do.
He's currenly on Rubifen 10mg mane and 7.5mg midday, low dose due to headaches.

Hi my Grandson hasbeen diagnosed with ADHD TARETS OCD my daughter was home schooling but it is all too much for her. He has been staying
us and his Mother and 5year old brother. It has been horendice to say the least. He swears he is crule to the cat upsets the whole family he is in control of everyone This child is 10years old and has a very determined defient streek we have no idea how to handle his bad behaviour. Mental Health tell us he is not retarded and he is suffering. Im sorry he is not suffering we all are and why is it that the so called medical profession do not listen to the parents. This child is frightening he bites his brother does not do anything he is told and speaks to all the family like dirt. When he is on a 1hour visit to the mental health workers he act like a poor miss understood child and manipulates anyone who pays him attention. Ihave no idea how my daughter will survive this child. I have had success with Strattera with my 8 yr old son He has been on the medication for a year and we saw changes in him within hours of taking his first pill Before his medication he had anger issues couldn't sit still in class and was interfering with the other children's learning by visiting their desks and talking all the time The worst thing was his hiding under the desk the kids thought he was crazy! He is smart and a loving child and told me his mind was running fast and he felt weird His teacher was patient and his dr was wonderful He likes him knows he is smart and really wanted to help him He is getting A's and B's now and we have a calm household.

My son is 16 now and we have fought ADHD especially hard in the younger years! He just got his permit, making C's in Geometry, passing all his classes this year, in tenth grade now! So what I am about to tell you will work but you MUST follow through! You must always mean what you say and say what you mean. You must learn to get your devil voice, "thats what my kids call it". When you say get down, dont say it more than twice. Grab him sturdy by the elbow pretty strong where he can jerk away, look him straight in the eyes and with a deep growl you must set him down. I dont mean oh baby we need to talk about your behavior. I mean in a voice he doesnt know if what you are going to do. You must be direct and growl your instructions to him and take away something he loves. Tell him for two days or 3 to start out. Dont give in, that comes back to say what you mean and mean what you say. Also dont be afraid to ruffle his butt! There is a difference in beating your child, then discipline. Remember in the bible it says "Spare the rod, spoil the child" of course you dont wanna use a rod!! A chore list helps, even if its for a dollar a week, when they get that dollar they are so happy, when they dont get it they will try harder. You have got to get your bluff over on him and let him know you are the boss of the house. If you dont it will never end!!
