I have been fighting this battle since my son was 3. I dont like or want drugs. My son was diagnosed at age 3 with adhd and at 5 with "a mood regulation disorder" basically bipolar. We have done as much behavioral and reforcement based programs as I think are humanly possible and finally gave in last summer and started clonadine for the mood regulation. We tried Straterra (its safer in the adhd drugs and the only non stimulant drug) I have seen some improvement, not enough for the teachers . I am ready to home school at this point. I feel your frustration and will be looking, if you find something that works I want to know. I heard a family mention chiropractics, something about balenceing the demands on the Central nervous system which is where the problem is with adhd. Im just not sure about it. Has anyone heard?

Biofeedback has lots of good research, but the local psycologist says the brains isnt mature enough for it to work till 7. We will try it when the time comes that our son is old enough. It is expensive, about 4000 and insurance doesnt cover it unless your in CA. Worth my extra job at mcdonalds if I have to.

Hi. I just found this site. My step son is still "being diagnosed", but we've known for years he has ADHD. He's only eight and we don't want to medicate (altouhg I see how it can make things better for all of us!). I see a chiropractor and when I mentioned the diagnosis he said to bring him in & it could help. At first it was a way for him to get more clients, but reading your post made me think. We haven't even begun counseling yet. The old insurance waltz - maybe he'll be covered, maybe he won't. The poor boy is struggling so badly. grades, behavior, even his diet! The only thing he does fast is eat. nonstop. Grant it I appriciate the enthusiam for my cooking (his brother will not eat ANYTHING), but I worry for his health. He has one friend (a wonderful boy with a brain tumor who eventually will pass on) and can't see how his mean swings push friends away. I just stopped at school and saw him sitting alone at the lunch table. I wanted to cry. He can be so sweet, but tends to fight alot.verbally at school, physically at home. He goes to a wonderful school (public, but suburban) and his teacher is an absolute angel but he won't be in her class forever. Another year, maybe, but not forever. I see him struggling with everything. Getting dressed on time for school, finishing homework in less than 3 hours (third grade is not THAT hard) I think his "real" disposition is very cheery, so he tries to play it off like he's tyring to be funny, but he really just doesn't know how to stop. I would love feed back on how to make our family happier (and less stressed out!)!!
