my 6 year old son was just diagnosed with severe adhd. we are now on a trial basis with the meds to see what will work. we started with the long acting adderall 5 and 10mg and then went to twice a day. we then went to the ritalin long acting and twice a day different mg. every single med made him very mean, moody, very irratable and worse than if he wasn't on meds. i know there is somthing going on with him. i wonder sometimes if he was misdiagnosed and there is something else going on. no med seems to work yet and i am getting very frustrated. any ideas?

The same thing happened to my son when he was little. The adderall was a complete nightmare. also the ritalin long acting was the same. The one med that worked for us after trying many combinations was simple ritalin. But that took time, because the first doctor kept changing the med. not the dose. The dose was the problem. also to help stabilize his mood he takes strattera. Make sure you have a good doctor that is very good at medication knowledge. That also took mant doctor changes. what ive noticed over the years is alot of times the doctor perscribes the med that they get kick backs at the time. so beware of alot of switches. If something works stick to your guns about keeping your child on it.
I would recomend that you stay away from red dyes, Hotdogs and processed food. That will worsen the mood swings. M and Ms are really bad. I have a chocolate cake I make from scratch that my kids love that they can have but if I go near a box cake or God forbid the frosting in a can they go nuts. This doesnot pertain to adhd kids alone. most kids react to these foods. I know it seems tough at first to eliminate these things. But take it one day at a time and minus one item at a time. pretty soon you'll stay clear of it because your know the differance.
I always pack my kids lunches for school as well. the school lunches have tons of perservetives that will set them off. I have my daughter on omega 3 or fish oil vitamins. plus a multi vit. this helps her so much with consontration. good luck and if you have any questios feel free to ask. Ive been at this for 20 years and there isnt much I dont know on the subject or at least can find out.

More often than not ADHD is only part of the diagnosis. Children have can Behavior Disorders, Mood Disorders etc. which is considered a comorbid diagnosis.

Keep notes on his daily behavior and take them with you on your next visit to his physician.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone tried changing their cleaning products? Less harmful chemicals in my home has changed my daughter's ADHD and my son's tantrums (he's 2 so I'm not sure if he has ADD/ADHD).

I am having the same problem, my son is 4 and we had him on Adderall 5mg twice a day and that made him moody, so I swithced to Adderall XR 10 mg and that made him violent and angry and he hit me. He started Concerta 18mg today and he is in PRe-K and the principal had to be called because a child said my son said a bad word and my son got angry and started throwing his shoes and yelling he did not say that word, so they had to take him to the hall and calm him down. I am stressed at trying to figure out what is going to make him happy because when he is off medication he can't sit still, he talks all the time, he gets the class acting out with him and now he is on medication he is moody and angry. Please help!

Ok I have tried both adderall and ritalin and neither one helped my son just made him like you said mean. I now have my son on concerta that is ritalin but it is taken once a day and it is a time released pill. My son takes that and he acts normal. That has helped him out alot. Ask your doctor about it, it could help for your son too. I was told by my sister from washington that she was doing research on different meds for adhd and she learned that adderall isn't good for our kids because it has caused death in kids with adhd. I found out that they had my nephew on it too and we almost lost him too. But he is now on this concerta and doing great. I hope that you ask your doctor about it.

My 5 year old son was diagnosed with O.D.D.when he was 4. His doctor has him on Geodon, 40mg in the morning and 0mg for dinner and before bed. I feel like nothing is working either and I am very frustrated. I keep reading that people are giving their children omega 3 and I would like to know how you give it to them? I am trying it but it only comes in caplet form (as far as I can tell)and I try to put it in something he drinks. I don't know if that is the way to give it to him or not. Please advise.

ODD, ADHD,OCD, AND AUTISM ARE ALL NEROLOGICAL (SP) DISORDERS THAT RESPOND TO THE SAME MEDS ALOT OF TIME. NOT ALWAYS THOUGH ADD OMEGA FOR THE MOOD SWINGS AND A MULTI, IT WILL TAKE TIME AND CONSISTANCY BUT WILL HELP iM SURE. CONCERTA IS NOT RITALIN. RITALIN HAS ITS OWN TIME RELEASE FORMULA. CONCERTA WORKS WELL FOR SOME BUT iVE FORND MANY HAVE BAD MELT DOWNS ON THE MED. ASK THE DOCTOR ABOUT STRATTERA FOR THE MOOD SWINGS.

I strongly encourage you to look into glyconutrient supplementation. It is easy, safe and people are having substantial, very substantial results with their children as well as adults when they add this to their diets. It works for other people in your situation, what if it worked for your son also? [email protected] if you want to get more info.

My 6 year old son was diagnosed alittle over a year and a half ago as ADHD, PDD, and OCD. I have to say that the meds. that worked the best were Focalin XR and he also will only sleep about 4 hours to 6 a night with out sleeping meds., too. Cutting the Red#40 and Yellow#5 out of his diet has really helped with irritabllity, too. I know that there are also alot of other home remedies out there to try, you just pretty much have to test the waters and see what works. Just as a added note I recently read that breast feeding helps alot with hereditary nerological disorders, so my suggestion is if you have another child I would consider it. Hope some of this helps. I research alot and am currently going to college to hopefully be a psychologist one day, so if you ever need to ask anything, ask away :).
