A friend of mine that has a baby who's about 3 1/2 months old wants to know how much cereal you should put in the formula with the baby's milk. I recall someone on here saying like one teaspoon per ounce. This is why im asking on here for my friend im sure that person will respond to me :) Thanks Ladies!

when my girls were babies the doctor told me not to put cereal in there bottles...that there wasn't any reason for it. and to not start them on solids until they are 4months old at the earliest

i went to alot of baby classes and they all said DON'T put baby cereal in Baby Bottles, and if shes only 3 1/2 months she shouldn't be eating that stuff yet. think would you like sucking that stuff through a bottle?

one table spoon to every 2 ounces

this is just my opinion. the reason i put xylea on cereal at 3 months was because i thought it would help her sleep longer. yes her sleeping habits changed, she woke up more. i stopped after the 3rd day but started up again at 3 1/2 months due to her spitting up alllllot. i asked the dr and she told me to put 1 tsp per ever oz but if i give her 6 oz i give her 5 tsp and if i give her 5 oz i give her 4tsp. i only do this at night time and thats it. but i think if it was some biiiiig no no about feeding your babies cereal through a bottle they would not make feeder nipples. i also bought spoons at the store the other day that said " ages 3 months+" nuk makes them. i bought them so i can sit her in her bumbo and let her play, look at it, hold it and let her put it in her mouth. she loves it, she gets all excited when i give it to her.

but if you cant give babies cereal before 4 months why is there a spoon for 3 months and older?

My sons pediatrician had me start giving him cereal in his bottle once during the day and a small bowl of cereal before bed when he was almost 3 months. He did that because my little guy had horrible refulx and couldn't keep anything down. There are alot of babies who have reflux or other medical reasons where they are put on cereal earlier. I believe that is why spoons start at age 3 months. Anyone who wants to start using cereal before the pediatrician recommends it, just call and tell the doctor what you want to do and find out how much to give your baby. Mizzes, since you said you asked her doctor first then it's fine what you are doing.

i agree with what you said about reflux, but the box the spoons came with did not say just for babies with reflux. i think as long as your dr oks it than it dosent matter when you start solids.

I just went today and mentioned again about his spitting up, and she said you started him on cereal right, i said yeh but not every feeding, she said well you need to start again and see if that helps. she said start off 1tbsp to every 4 then 1 tbsp to every 2, and for reflux, like my son has, you work up to 1tbsp per oz

hay I am the one who said 1tbs per ounce. That is what the box says for "first feedings" also what my dr told me. Lots of people jsut add rice thinking that "a little extra" will help the baby sleep, but honestly I haven't noticed much of a difference in the sleeping part. the point of cereal is to be thick. Adding just a little will not accomplish anything. Also if a baby is getting it from a bottle then there really should be a medical reason. I know that some parents di it for the supposed "sleep" help. If it is really time for cereal then it should be given in a bowl with a spoon. Like coart said it is best to work up if it is a reflux issue. you only want it as thick as the baby needs, but in my experience anything less then about 1tbs every 2oz doesn't do anything to help reflux.

brandiss-you "can" do what ever you want. It is just not what is reccomended by doctors. It won't hurt a baby, but it is not needed and you are adding bulk to the babies diet for no reason. If you have a regular child who eats a normal amount of food in normal amounts of time peroids then there is no need to add anything until 4-6 months. If you have a baby with reflux ir that is gaining lots of weight because they are eating 5oz every 2.5 hrs then dr's will have you add rice to hold off their hunger and help with the reflux. If there is no reason they if is jsut teaching your child poor eating habits earily and teaching them to want more then they need

yes jill you are right but i think you should know what is good and what is not. its not like i am going to give her more than what she needs and make her sick or kill her. i give her cereal at night just because durring the day she drinks 6 oz bottles every 4 hours and she can only probably keep down 4 oz. now i have tried giving her 4 oz bottles just to make sure i wasnt overfeeding her but she was fussy if thats all i gave her. oh well i start her on stage 1 foods today so i hope she does well.

also the reason the dr started her on cereal at night was because she was drinking 5 oz every 2 hours it was bad in the beginning because she had to adjust to it but when she got use to it she sleeps a little longer through the night, she still wakes up through the night still so it does not help a baby sleep through the night.
