I was visiting with a friend who is pregnant this past weekend. When I mentioned, that I had eaten at Subway, she quickly said that pregnant women weren't supposed to eat lunch meat! I was shocked! Nobody told me that! Is this true? And here I thought I was being a good mommy and opting for ham, tomatoes and cucumbers on wheat vs. McDonald's and Arby's!

Yes, any posterized meats and cheese you cannot have. They mean cold meats like bologna, ham, turkey, chicken, salami, you have to eat them warm.

I will write you what I have from my book I got from my OBGYN.

Special considerations on cheese, milk and unpasteurized products:
The following are CDC recommendations for preventing foodborn listeriosis:
1. Thoroughly cook raw food from animal sources.
2. Thoroughly was raw vegetables before eating.
3. Keep uncooked meats separate from vegetables and cooked foods.
4. Avoid consumption of unpasteurized milk or foods made with it.
5. Avoid soft cheeses. There is no need to avoid hard cheeses, cream cheese, cottage cheese or yogurt.
6. Reheat leftover food or ready to eat foods (like hot dogs) until steaming hot before eating.

Hope this helps it came from the Pregnancy Infomation booklet.

Lunch meat contains a very mild bacteria called Listeriosis. In adults with healthy immune systems it does absolutly nothing - but there is a chance that it could affect a fetus. Any meat stored at room tempurature, or even chilled, can contain it. Pasteurization doesn't really have anything to do with it - but it does have to do with the juices you drink. Soft cheeses (like real mozzerella or brie) can't be eaten because the amount of bacteria left in them after they are finished curing is to high.

Well, this is the first I've heard of it. I eat Subway all the time and cold lunchmeat and did so with my first daughter too. I guess there's a chance that it could be bad but it seems like nowadays pregnant women can't eat alot of things that used to be considered okay.

I hate to say it.... but I still eat it all the time. It's hard not to. I'm sure the minor risk is there, but it seems like EVERYTHING is a risk these days. It can't really be that bad though, because 5 years ago doctor's didn't know about it and all those babies are just fine.

That's what I was thinking too Nicole. I mean, if all this stuff was so bad then why don't they make a booklet that each doctor has to give out when they determine your pregnant. "What to eat and What not to eat." Because I would've never known your not supposed to eat lunchmeat (and some other things) w/o this forum LOL.

I have read about lunchmeat being potentially dangerous, as well as the soft cheeses. Personally, I have tried to cut down on these types of food, but have still eaten it. I'm sure we'll all be okay, but it never hurts to be careful!

Tuna is also only supposed to be consumed in small portions. I thought I was being good too and eating tuna for lunch and having Tuna Helper for dinner. But my dr. said only once a week if I have to, otherwise less would be better. Pretty soon eating fruit and veggies is going to be bad too!!

Tuna's not recommended b/c of the mercury levels. Tuna from certain areas such as South America aren't even recommended for non-pg people b/c the levels are so high. Tuna from Asia is considered the best.

omg this is just sad... I LOVE cold sandwiches from safeway and subway :( mmm especially the california dreamin' at safeway. I was thinking since those sandwiches have so many veggies and some fruits and like all the food groups basically, it would be actually better than any other food.

Ok I did read some place that it could be harmful, but that it was rare. Now I am kinda freaked out about it. I am addicted to subway club wraps. I have eaten them at least twice a week for many many months even before I was pregnant. I always thought of it as a healthier alternative to fast food. Can you tell if something is wrong or is like a defect that you won't know about until after birth??

I never heard of this with my first pregnancy 6 years ago and I had SubWay all the time and always went for lunchmeat instead of the burgers and such from fast food places but now this is a new thing and it sucks because I"m dying for a dang turkey sandwich wich is way healthier than a burger and I'm affraid to eat one. Theres a slim chance that we could get ahold of some bad lunchmeat and thats whats scary about it.
Jill I think as long as you feel fine and havent gotten sick then its ok, I would think that you would feel sick and then suspect it was from bad meat. I wouldnt worry about it unless you get sick.

It sounds like this caused quite a stir, I wasn't expecting that. I will talk with my OB/GYN's nuse about this and make a re-post if you want me to. I posted the same thing on another baby site I belong to and got pretty much the same kind of responses.

I'm going to Subway tonight. Pretty soon there's going to a pregnant women city where we all live in a giant bubble eating only organic fruits and vegatables. I think I'll take my chances, and guess what I had spinach dip the other day...I kno, I know...living on the edge:)

I have read this too...you know i feel like you can't eat anything....I just watched a news program that says grilled chicken contains carcinogens...and they want to put warning labels in resturaunts....So what will we be able to eat...

Girls I need to get a list. I think that my dr forgot to give me one when I went to my appt because there is some stuff that I didn't know. I want to be safe when eating, but I do think that some of the expectations are a bit over the top. I read some placce that you can't drink tap water while pregnant.

I've read that you need to heat processed meats like hotdogs to steaming hot to be safe. Subway will toast your sub if you want, I wonder if this would be enough to make it safe?

I read in Panic Free Pregnancy that lunch meat is fine if it's been heated. So if you like turkey slices, if you heat it up you'll be fine but just having them cold from the package is not a good idea.

I've read the same thing as betty -- and I'm guessing the toasting at Subway is probably enough. I had a grilled ham and cheese sandwich the other day, cuz ham sounded good... I would think just making sure it's warmed up would be the best -- then we can all still have our healthy lunch meat, but be doing things right for our baby
