has an ear infection. I feel so bad for not taking her to the dr sooner. She wasn't pulling her ear or anything she was jsut acting like she had a cold. Since darius was sick last week I just assumed that he had given it to her. I think that she did have a cold also, but at some point it also turned into an ear infecftion. She spent the entire weekend going through crying bouts of just screaming for like 2hrs at a time. So now she is on some antibiotics and has started to feel a little better. I just feel bad that she was in pain and I waited so long thinking that it was just viral

I think Kaden has one too Jill. I feel your pain. Kaden has been screaming in the middle of the night for a little while now and I thought it was teeth. Then he got a cold as well. I noticed yesterday that he is tugging his ear and it's red, so I gave him some homeopathic ear drops and he settled. I just gave him some tylenol now as well. He goes to the doctor Thursday.

It's hard to tell when they have ear infections versus colds. The important thing is she's on meds now, you didn't do anything wrong!

Just yesterday Kaden started slapping at his left ear a lot---like a dog scratching at its ears! :) He has been a little grumpier than usual---ummmmm. Danny is home all day with him--I guess I will wait for his report and I might be taking mine to the docs tomorrow too........

I am one of those sort of people who avoid going to the doctor because I think that some doctors give out antibiotics jsut to shut up parents when it is viral, I remember that Jeremiah used to get them often when he was a baby. I know now that if she is acting crazy like crying for no reason when she has not done that before and she had been running a fever I am going to jsut take her to ahve her ears looked at. I mean if it ends up being a cold and the dr wants to give meds (which I don;t think our is that type) then I will jsut say no to them.

Coart I would get him checked just to be sure. It is so painful for them and they have no real way to tell us. IT jsut sucks that it happens when they have other stuff going on like a cold or teething because it is so hard to tell if it is a normal teething thing or an infection of some sort

Oh one more thing I read that some babies start getting ear infections after they learn to hold their own bottles because they tilt their heads back farther or lay flat and milk will collect in the middle ear.

Thats what I heard before---about the laying down with a bottle. So if Kaden does have one--I bet that is why. He does hold his own bottle and will lay down with it. (not at night--just throughout the day)

Even if they lay on their side? I make Kaden lay on his side when I give him a bottle.

when emma was a baby i always held her while she had her bottle and i never let her lay down while she ate and she stillhad ear infections ALL the time....like 15 in 24 months! thats one of the main reasons i breastfed gracie and she is 2 1/2yrs and has only had 3 infections her whole life...
so i dont think it has so much to do with them laying down as it does with eating from the bottle...i'm not sure how though.

I was told not to let my son feed himself in the laying down position, even on the side. I always held him to feed him, even when he held the bottle and fed himself.

NEVER EVER lay a baby down while they feed.. not even on the side.

Always have them elevated. that is 1 of the main causes of ear infection

My daughter only had one ear infection her whole life--and it was when she was almost 2 years old. I let her eat her bottle laying down, when she could hold it.....that was before I knew about it causing ear infections....BUT it never did cause one with her. I guess that is why I'm so lax with Kaden doing it. I guess if this ends up being an ear infection then that will change!

Well then your darn lucky Double_K =P

I thought so! :D I really did always wonder why she didn't...ALL of my friends kids always had one. People would say about breastfeeding---but I only breastfed for 2 weeks....
Doesn't look like I'll be that lucky with Kaden.

I feel bad because I knew about the whole middle ear thing and that is just one of the many reasons why parents should not "prop" baby bottles, and I even thought about it when seeing kendra laydown to eat her bottle once in a while. Most of the time I have her say on a pillow or make her stay in my lap so she is elevated, but I never told gary or my mom to do that even though it entered my mind. Guess you should always go with your gut.
