I found out yesterday that I have protein in my urine; I'm 20-weeks pregnant. The doctor said it could be due to the discharge I'm experiencing, or an infection, and shes sent it away for further tests. Is it common to have protein in urine? Has anyone else experienced it, and if so, whats the outcome been?

Some amounts of protein in urine can be normal so it depends on how much. If the levels are low, it could just be an infection or if it's high, could be a warning of pre-eclampsia ahead. In the latter case, they will monitor you, but you usually have other symptoms with it such as high blood pressure and very severe swelling. I wouldn't worry too much, you will be monitored closely if that is the case and with technology today, you'll be fine. Did she say if the levels were high or borderline? How is your blood pressure? My docs were quite sure I would end up with it because my blood pressure was always high with my pregnancy, but because I had gestational diabetes, I had to change my eating habits and my doctor says that is probably what stopped it.

i recently had high levels of protein in my water but that was because id had bad vomiting etc at 32weeks. was kept in hospital until they could stop me vomiting then the protein disappeared immediately and so far has not returned. I was really worried but its amazing how quickly it can return to normal.

She didn't say how much protein there was, only that I had protein in my urine, and that she needed to send it to be tested. I'm feeling really unwell today ... headache, aches and pains, and the fatigue has come back, so I'm wondering if I do have an infection ...She didn't test my blood pressure yesterday, but up until now it's been fine.

headaches with the protein together may give indications of pre-eclampsia but if shes sending your water away theyre doing the best for you. dont work yourself up, youll be fine im sure.

As long as my little son is fine, then all is well. Is pre-elampsia dangerous?

to be honest im not 100% sure what it entails, as like i say mine was due to me being so sick so it quickly cleared up. I think theyd be more concerned about you than baby but dont quote me on that. your doc cant be that worried though or shed have got you into hospital straight away.

Thanks for the info. :) Yeah, she said she thinks it's an infection, but she wants to be sure. I hope that's all it is.

im sure it is and like i said it can clear up so quickly. when i was in hospital they tested me in the morning when i got up and it was really high, they tested me again at lunch time and my water was clear and has never come back so they do know what theyre doing and can sort things out quickly for you

i just read on the other topic that you are also being sick with hyperemisis, it may well just be that thats affecting your water as with me

Yeah I hope so. I have to wait another couple of days for these results. I read that you're expecting a baby girl at the moment, and that you have two other girls. I'm having a boy, but I do want to have a little girl at some point. How did you find the births the first two times? Is labour as difficult as they say?

i had a hard time the first time around ending up in a c section. On baby number 2 i said i wanted a natural birth which they werent too pleased about but i insisted and had her in 3 hours, no problems so going for natural again this time. i didnt find it as bad as i expected, yes its painful but your body is designed to have babies and once the baby is there its all worth it. i know everyone says that but its so true.

Oddly enough, I'm actually looking forward to going into labour (at full term of course!!) There was a woman in labour at the maternity hosp yesterday, and I was a little jealous of her, because unlike who has to wait another 20 weeks to meet my baby, she'll prob meet hers in a few hours. I just can't wait to meet my son!!!

even though im on number 3 im still a little nervous of going through it all again, maybe because theres quite a big age gap but at the same time im so excited. also im the size of a house and never seem comfortable now so im ready.

My last two visits my urine had something wrong with it, she said something about enlarged blood cells, so I don't know if there was protien in it or not. Both times they questioned me if I was having symptoms of a bladder infection, which I'm not. But they sent it off to the lab to test anyway and I never heard from them and I asked my mom if they said anything to her since she works at the doctors office and she hadn't so I assume everything was ok.
