So I am 23, pregnant and very new to this stuff. This might sound like a stupid question...bare with me. Can you use tanning beds while pregnant? Can it hurt the baby if I do?

No you can't use tanning beds while pregnant and yes it can hurt the baby. And not to preach, but you really shouldn't be using a tanning bed at all. Protect your skin.

I think tanning beds are dangerous for the same reason hot showers/baths are bad...They elevate your internal body temperature to the point that it could hurt your developing baby. If you went tanning before you knew you were pregnant, it's probably fine. But if you continue doing it, you could put your baby at risk.

I hear because of the changes in your body and hormonal levels fluctuating in your skin, that tanning outside is also not recommended. Although, they don't say not to do it...they just mention to avoid sunlight if possible. So if you MUST tan I would say that outside is your only choice.

tanning beds... those are a no no...

tanning outside.. its fine in the first trimester... AS LONG AS you dont go tanning during the "danger zone" time frame. The danger zone is the 5 hours in which the sun is at it's peak strength between 10am and 3 pm... Also wear a tanning lotion with SPF... SPF 5 should be the minimal used... and only lay in the sun for small periods of time (30 mins max)

tanning after your second trimester should be limited or not done at all...an alternative to tanning is fake tanning ie self tanning lotions, mystic tan.. etc.. however while pregnant stay away from the pill products that promote tanning.. the chemicals in the tanning pills are very toxic to the baby..

Actually, having asked 4 doctors about this, the tanning bed itself is NOT dangerous, in fact, its not much different then sitting in the sun sweating your ass off while pregnant. The danger comes from the heat since being hot or feverish durning pregnancy is not good. I tanned once a week with my first child since I suffer from seasonal depression, nothing happened to me or my daughter, she is fine and perfect in every way. My gyno encouraged it, but only for 10 min. and if you feel hot to get out... I personally think its ok, as long as you don't get too warm to raise your body temp.

i lived in costa rica for 7 years until my 2nd trimester and then i came back to the states, and i spent the winter here, and i was as white as i have been in years and it felt soooo depressing i felt like a big white blob....
well we had some warm days here so you better believe i went straight to the beach to lay out in my bikini! im 31 weeks. i felt sooooo much better after being in the sun and i look way better too. just dont let yourself get burnt or overheated. i wouldnt do the tanning bed while youre preg though cause when you think about all that radiation cooking your body it just cant be too good for the baby......
my baby is half costa rican so maybe she will just come out with a nice tan and not have to worry about pasty whiteness or sunburns!!!!

and soooo weird i actually got hit on there on the beach, this guy was asking me all these questions and telling me to name my baby after him... i thought he was drunk, but he was drinking a capri sun... i am really starting to think that there are lots of men with some kind of weird pregnancy fetish....
