I think that the saying actually referrs to what you crave, not what you eat... but this is my first and I haven't found out the sex, so I couldn't say if there is any truth to it or not.

This is what you would call an old wives tale. Here are a few others:
What could be more fun than trying to guess the sex of your baby-to-be? Everyone wants to get in the game
Don't be surprised if someone you've never met stops you at the supermarket, offering a prediction of your baby's gender. For hundreds of years, expecting mums have relied on time-tested methods of guessing their baby's sex. Even though these old wives' tales are far from foolproof, they are certainly more fun than their more reliable successors, amniocentesis and ultrasound. Enjoy guessing your baby's sex!

It's a boy if:

You didn't experience morning sickness in early pregnancy
Your baby's heart rate is less than 140 beats per minute
You are carrying the extra weight out in front
Your belly looks like a basketball
Your areola have darkened considerably
You are carrying low
You are craving salty or sour foods
You are craving protein - meats and cheese
Your feet are colder than they were before pregnancy
The hair on your legs has grown faster during pregnancy
Your hands are very dry
Your pillow faces north when you sleep
Dad-to-be is gaining weight too
Pregnancy has you looking better than ever
Your urine is a bright yellow in colour
Your nose is spreading
If you hang your wedding ring over your belly, it moves in circles
You are having headaches
You add your age at the time of conception and the number for the month you conceived the number is even

It's a girl if:

You had morning sickness early in pregnancy
Your baby's heart rate is at least 140 beats per minute
You are carrying the weight in your hips and rear
Your left breast is larger than your right breast
Your hair gets red highlights
You are carrying high
Your belly looks like a watermelon
You crave sweets
You crave fruit
You crave orange juice
You don't look quite as good as normal during pregnancy
You are moodier than usual during pregnancy
Your face breaks out more than usual
You refuse to eat the heel of a loaf of bread
Your breasts have really blossomed!
Your pillow faces south when you sleep
Your urine is a dull yellow in colour
If you hang your wedding ring over your belly, it moves from side to side
If you add your age at the time of conception and the number for the month you conceived the number is odd

The problem with these are that they are exactly what they are call old wives tales. They are not fact. In fact when I was pregnant with my first child which happened to be a boy.
I experience morning sickness right away, his heart rate was always above 140 (it was actually 153+ most times), I actually carried high (people actually told me that they though the doctor was wrong about the gender of my baby, my areola never darkened, I couldn't stand meat especially red meat, never had a craving for salty or sour foods (I actually couldn't get enough of sweets), my pillow actually faced south and still does, my husband never gained weight, the only thing my pregnancy did for me according to my husband was make me nicer...LOL, my urine was actually not bright but pale, no widing of the nose, my wedding ring did say I was having a boy, I did experience alot of headaches but I have magraines so because of the hormones this is going to happen anyways, and my age at the time of conception and month I concieved adds up to 31 which is an odd number not even. So everything but my wedding ring pointed to me having a girl. My son is now 2.

This time around my wedding ring says I am again having a boy, the chinese calendar says I am having a girl, and the needle test has no clue as to whether I am having a boy or a girl.

These old wives tales should come with a warning label that says "for entertainment only". I've craved oddball things with both my pregnancies and I've got one boy, and another boy on the way. With my first, I craved sour stuff. Gummi worms, chewing gum, unripe watermelon and honeydew. This time, I'm craving roast beef sandwiches, cheese and crackers, pretzels (which I hate), and trail mix. Just have fun with the old wives tales until you get your scan midway through pregnancy.

LOL...I wish I had a craving for pickles. I think I actually have a collection of pickles started in my house. Every time they are on sale or I have a coupon for them I buy them. My son eats them as snacks so I'm not really willing to find out what would happen if I didn't have them in the house. However, speaking of pickles the best pickles are the garlic ones...Love them...LOL
