I have had my cats for a couple of years now. I am expecting our first child in March. Our one cat is about 2 and the other two are less than a year old. I love them to death, I have pretty much seen them grow up. What I'm wondering is I've read so much about cats and babies, will my newborn be ok around my cats?

Hello Annie, I had cats with my daughter they were fine. In fact one became verry protective over her...she would not let any one near her (not in a vitious way). There are a lot of stories about cats suffacating children while they sleep.....I wouldnt pay no attention to them. You know your cats! If they have a good dispasition they will be fine. The only thing you may have to be conserned with...is when the child become a toddler. You dont want the toddler to hurt the cat... this will cause the cat to defend its self. We all know how cats defend ....with claws and teeth! No, as an infant I wouldnt worrie!

I have had my cat for 5 years, the only thing that I can offer is don't change the litter box, unless you have no one that can do it for you. If you have to wear gloves to do it and hold your breath. My cat pretty much steers clear of all of my kids now!

I have the same fear. We have three cats and one of them weighs 22 pounds! I talked to my mom about it who had four children of her own and also took care of my older brothers newborn. She said that cat's can pick up the smell of formula/breastmilk real easy. They tend to smell it on the mouth or face of the baby so they will jump on top of the baby and try and lick the formula/breastmilk off of the ace of the baby. Hence the smothering. That kind of weight on an infant can't be good. I would just keep a close eye on the cat when its around your baby and make sure to wipe the mouth and the face of your baby really well.
Hope that made sense!

no you will be fine. just to be safe, when u clean the litter, wash ur hands after[ u should do that anyways] and just make sure kitty doesnt try to play with the babys, or snuggle to much, besides you shouldnt let your cat snuggle with the new baby, in case your cat comes down with somehting. just to be safe! but supervision is the kay to all! anyways your cat will probably be scared of the new baby! plus new studies show that babues that were exposed to animals, early in life, had a smaller chance of developing allergies. but just dont leave the baby alone with the cat! lol, some cats are just freaks when a new bay comes in the house, my best friends cat started jumping around when he saw the new baby in him moms bed. lol. he got mad. they had to keep kitty outa thier rrooom for a few months to prevent the cat from getting spooked and jumpin all around. it was kinda funny! but all should be well!!!!! CONGRATS!

Your baby should be fine around the cats! I agree with others, just watch them closely when they are in the same room, especially at first!

As far as cats and pregnancy, I want to double and triple other's words on litter boxes *and* cats while you are pregnant!!!! Cats can be the carriers of a very serious desease called toxoplasmosis. This is totally harmless to everyone *except* pregnant women and fetus's!!!! I got a huge lump behind my ear when I was about 14 and had to have it removed to check for cancer. What they found was toxoplasmosis and the first thing my dr asked, was "Are you pregnant?!!" When I said, No, of course not! He told me how extremely dangerous this disease is to unborn babies and that it is doubly deadly because it has no symptoms! Once you have had it and are immune to it, you don't get it again, but there is not really a way to know that. I grew up with cats and kittens all around me my whole life (played with them every day) and I did not get the disease until I was 14. It is a very serious disease to the unborn baby and can cause serious birth defects and even death of the fetus. Toxoplasmosis is transmitted through a cat's feces, thus the litter box warnings, *but* think of a cat washing himself, walking in his litter box, etc. also! None of our cats were indoor at the time I got this and had never changed a litter box in my life!

Just wanted to 'double' warn about this again, as I feel it is something most people don't know much about!

I am allergic to cats and I am pregnany. I am trying to tell the mother in law that I dont want my newborn at her house for a little while b\c of the fear of my newborn also being allergic. What are your opinions?
