Help! I have had my bulldog for going on 11 weeks now and the housebreaking was going along well but now all of the sudden every single time I leave him in his crate to go to work or shopping or whatever he messes in it. I mean alot..I can be gone as little as an hour and there is a mess when I get back. I let him out befor I leave and even when we are home and he is outside to do his duty, I bring him back in the house and he will crap or what ever there in the house.. Does anyone have a clue on what is going on with him..I am at my whits end! It isn't cause he is left alone to long because when I am at work my son is here letting him out and playing with him...

Does he only poop in his crate, or does he do it in the house as well? Also if he does poop only in his crate does he do it when no one is home? I noticed you said you can go out for just a short trip and he will relieve him self in the crate. There can be a couple different reasons for why he would do that! One he associates his crate as a negitive thing, thus making him nervouse not wanting to be in it. Two he could be experiencing anxiety when you leave, that would make him poop a lot! Finally he is not beeing taken out at the rite time's to relieve himself. Most of the time, timeing is important in training. You should have your dog on scheduled feeding! this way you can set his schedual for pooping. Once he is on a schedual you must try to keep on it, if you wait to long after his schedual time he may not be able to hold it.

Thank you for your help. The crate training was going well until this last week or so. He was only being put in there when I was going somewhere and at night to sleep. For the longest time there were no messes now in the last week or so he relieves himself in both manners and even lays in it. This morning I had taken him out side and stayed out there with him for 20 mins to an half an hour and after he had done his chore, we came in and not 5 mins. later he pooped in the kitchen. As for the crate being a negative thing, I have not used it for punishment and he always gets a small treat when he enters his crate when asked to.
His schedual has been to let him out of the crate and outside to relieve himself. Then after feedings we go out a short time later to relieve himself. I have also noticed lately that he won't even walk away from the door unless someone walks out there with him. It just seems in the last week or so his training has digressed and I am not understanding why. I was actually bragging about how well he was doing and not it is making me crazy! I wonder if this is normal for english bulldogs to digress just to test us?

No hon, its not normal for any dog to do these things to test us! they usually have some reason that this happens. When he poops in the crate is it soft and all over the place? And do you only crate him at night and when you are going some where? Also has there been a change in his routine like.....mabe he usto have some one home all day and now he has no one home with him. For en example did he spend most of his day out of the crate with a person/people and now has to spend more time in his crate alone?

Oh trust me,,He has free run of the house most of the day and night. If I am at work(I work a rotating shift so sometimes days other weeks nights) When I am at work at nights my son is here, And during the day he is loose all the time, but you see he has taken to going out side and not really finishing his job and when he gets back inside he will go potty in the house also. And as for being left alone more often this is the same schedule we have had since the day we brought him home. Like right now. I got home from work (To a mess in his crate again) Cleaned it up, cleaned him up, feed him took him out side to go and I will be up until my son gets up . So you see he is not kenneled needlessly. Oh I do believe when he goes in the kennel it is solid to start with...It is just after his stomping around in it , Its a mess then.

Sorry for all the questions, I am just trying to get more info. Ok he is only crated when you are leaving or bed time. Crate him more! do it when you are home not only when you are leaving. He needs to be non rutien crated. give him something he likes to chew such as a bone or special toy, that will keep him occupied a lot of the time he is in there. He is still young and he may just now be recognizing a rutien of you leaving and not liking it. Put him in the crate more at randome times dont allow him to roam the house at his own free will. show him he will not only be crated when you leave. Give him something special to do in the crate, some thing he will only associate with the crate. Remember dont only crate him when you are leaving, crate him at randpome times or the day!

Thanks I will try that and let you know. Hopefully he will get this undercontrol , Realizing he is just a puppy I try to be understanding but boy sometimes it is hard! But then when you scold him and he looks at me with that sour puss of his, I can't help but love him. I have a few days off now so we will be working hard at this. Thanks again!

We raised English Bulldogs for 5 years and they can be a pain they are very stubborn but try putting paper in the back of his crate and this usually makes them stop this is how wetrained all of our puppies before they went to thier new homes

Baxter(That's his name) is doing much better lately, I moved his kennel to where he can see me and know that I am close by (I had it out in the breezeway) and then I have been putting him it in while I shower and such, then I let him out when I am done. When I am at work my son has been extra digilent about being around him and letting him know he has to go out side to potty. I tried the puppy pads in his kennel but he decided those where just for ripping to shreds so I stopped doing that. He has only had 2 accidents in the last couple of weeks and the other night my son fell asleep before putting him in his kennel and when I got home Baxter was just laying in his bed door open and didn't have a mess anywhere!!! He's come a long way!

I found an English Bulldog chomping up my trash the other day! He was the best damb looking English Bulldog I have seen in a long time. He was also the most precious guy to! My daughter took him to have his neck scaned for a chip and he was chipped. The problem was...the owners never registered it! We did find the owners by doing a city dog licencing check for an Englishbull dog in the area. We got luckey there was a female English bulldog licenced on my street . We called the home phone for that dog hoping that they would be his owners and it turned out he was thiers! Boy was it a great feeling finding his home! He was not licenced nore was his chip registerd to his owners. Hes home now thats all that counts!

Baxter is doing well with his training but we encountered a new problem this weekend. He was developing rashy ichy blotches so I took him to the vet today and he has demodex mites, Apparently common in English bulldogs but fustrating all the same. So now we are tending to that , But he is still adorable. Congratulations Lindalu on finding that bulldogs home! Animals need friends like you!

Cinder its good to hear Baxter is doing well with his potty training. Its to bad for him that he has mites, they can be uncomfortable. As much as I love English Bulldogs and would loved to have kept him I also knew some one would miss him terribly. I was verry happy to see him back with his family.

How long can you leave an English Bulldog alone?

Hi, I would really like to get a bulldog but I am worried about how long they can be left alone during the day? I would be able to leave on my lunch breaks to come home and let him/her out to do their business...but I am wondering how long is too long for a bulldog to be left home alone?
