What other seizure meds are there besides soloxine, potassium bromide, and phenobarbitol?????

My Max has been having mini fits since Friday night. Not the occasional grand mals like he usually has. They are very mild and short in durration but are happening about every 10 min. He has a vet appt at 4pm but I am scared to death and need some kind of answer before then!!!! THANK YOU!!

Thanks T-rabbit! There were 3 new drugs on there that I printed out for our Vet to see.

I gave Max a dose of liquid valium about 11:30 and he's had 2 small fits since then. The valium usually knocks him out completely for about 3-4 hours. I don't have a very good feeling about this. : ((

I am so sorry for you and your pooch. I hope they can help in some way. Good luck and my prayers are with you.

Thanks T-rabbit. My DH has him at the vet now. Dr. said he has tried all 3 of the different drugs I found at the site you gave me on other dogs w/little or no success. But I really appreciate the help!!
They changed his meds around about 3 mos ago. Lowered the Pheno and upped the other 2. They THINK his pheno level is way down and are now giving Max his 2nd IV's of the stuff. They will check his blood level again and then hopefully he can come home.

And THANK YOU for the offer of an alibi!!!! I very well could need it!! LOL! My DH has been calling me every hour w/updates. And EVERY SINGLE TIME he just has to throw out there:
"Well, they are letting him come home BUT if Max has one more seizure tonight...you do know what that means don't you??" AND "do you realize what this is costing me???"
I KNOW HE IS NEARING THE END...I'm the one that lives with Max day in and day out...I am far from stupid! AND I could give a flying rat's ass what this is costing!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup I see murder and mayhem in my very near future! LOL!

Now remember that men have very small brains but even smaller hearts! So he may not care how much you love Max but thats ok he is a man. Just blow him off. I freaking man is not worth stressing over. Good luck.

Dawn I would have said to give him more Pheno, I have to do that with my old lady dog all the time. Its like a roller coaster ....up with the potassium and down with the Pheno. Then she has a seziur and we are uping the Pheno again!

I do hope all is well with Max, the increase in the Pheno should help! I did see you said the vet gave Max his Pheno through iv, did he/she send him home with the pills as well? He will need to keep his levels to prevent more seizures.

In some cases Valium may be used when Phenobarbital cannot be utilized or when a combination of medications are prescribed.

THANKS GUYS!!!

Max is home and doing MUCH better!! His pheno level was so low that we now have to double it. I gave him a valium supository at noon

Name: Dawn C. | Date: Mar 28th, 2007 9:29 AM
Don't know why that submitted..I wasn't done LOL!

Anyway, valium at noon and he was still having fits. That's what got me so upset! But like I said he is much better now...loaded up on doggie dope, but much better.

T-rabbit-DH and I are separated. He does love Max dearly, but DH is a cheap SOB and a HUGE drama queen. Reason # 29 that I tossed him out! LOL!

CAN"T THANK YOU TWO ENOUGH!!! ♥

Dawn no thanks to me needed! T- was the real help, Im a late commer as usual. LOL!!! How is Max today? Your hubby sounds like my sisters hubby, they had a dog when they parted. Hubby got squeaky when it came to vetting their dog! He didnt want to pay!

T- Valiume is good for later when nothing else will controll them. The only thing with Valiume is it nockes the dog out or they are real drowsy and groggy!

I feel when they get to the Valiume stage all the time, it will be time to let them rest! When my old lady dog reaches that point I will have her put to sleep.

My Max is GREAT today!!! Still very groggy and tired but they pumped him so full of meds yesterday that I expect him to rest a good long while. I was up with him all last night and DH baby sat today...no seizures at all! THANK GOD!!! The Dr said his only problem was that his pheno level was half of what it should have been. Max is going back tomorrow just for a follow up : ))))

They gave us regular valium supositories instead of the liquid ones I had. Aparently the liquid form loses it's potency very quickly so when I gave it to Max yesterday, the Dr said it would have done nothing for him. I really would have liked to have known that little tid bit ahead of time!

Good to hear he is well today! I was going to tell you about the valium but I noticed you said you had given him some. So I figured you already knew that seizures could be treated with valium. Does he have hypothyroidsm? I notice that one of the meds you mentioned he is on is a thyroid med.

Name: Dawn C. | Date: Mar 29th, 2007 7:27 AM
Yes, they diagnosed the thyroid problem about 2 years ago when the clusters started. Before that he would have maybe 1 fit every 3 months or so.

He did have 2 of the mini fits last night. Dr. said they could be permanent due to neurological damage. I'll know more tonight when he has his follow up visit : (

Dawn thats terrible, hopefully they stop and it isnt what the vet suspects! Keep in mind even though we as humans see it as a horrific thing, the animal doesnt know the diffrence! He doesnt realise that he has any thing wrong! Will you keep us posted? Thanks!

Dawn I dont know what to say!!!! I am so sorry, I cant even tell you how sorry I am for you! What happend hon?

Name: Dawn C. | Date: Mar 30th, 2007 10:24 AM
Much thanks to all of you for your kindness! ♥♥
God I hate this...he tore my heart right out.

Once the valium wore off, Max went back to having the mini fits. The Dr said they were due to extensive nuerological damage and were permanent. He lost his eye sight and all motor function and I had to hold his head up so he could eat and drink. He would sing us a beautiful song every night and he couldn't even do that anymore...so it was time : (((

The Dr. said the brain damage was so bad that he would have passed on his own within a week. He was such a proud and regal old guy that I just couldn't let him go on like that.

Name: Dawn C. | Date: Mar 30th, 2007 10:33 AM
Lindalu-I have almost a full script of potassium bromide...750 mg capsules. They are very pricy so if you can use them for your baby just let me know. I don't want your home address. Open a PO Box or give me the address to a "safe" location and I will ship them to you.

I tried to donate them to the animal shelter but they do not keep any dogs/cats that need meds...I would hate to throw them out.

Name: lindalu | Date: Mar 30th, 2007 2:39 PM
Dawn you did the rite thing for Max! Cant believe how fast all that happend, it was just a matter of a few days! God I really am sorry! You must be beside your self with grief.

Thank you so much for the offer, it is trully kind! My old lady dog is on liquid 500mg doses. Will the vet take it back? My sister just lost her Bullmastif, the vet took all the extra meds back.

Name: Dawn C. | Date: Mar 30th, 2007 3:37 PM
♥ lindalu...my son's and I all took today off work/college. Just can't face real people yet. We are having a Max day...you know telling funny stories about him, looking at pictures, whole lot of tears etc.

Thanks, but I I don't want money back for them. I would rather give the meds away to someone that can use them for their own baby. We did that with the chemo meds when we lost our lady Shepherd a couple of years ago. It always makes me feel a better if I can help someone else keep their baby healthy just a little bit longer.

Name: lindalu | Date: Mar 30th, 2007 6:12 PM
Im like that too... if some one else can benifit from the meds, I would rather give them away! It is important to talk about Max, Remember all his great qualities as well as all the happiness he has brought to you and your family. Have you heard of Craigs List .com? You may be able to find some one there that can use the meds. You can list them in the pets section for free!

Take care, my thoughts are with you!
