I don't raise chinchillas but I have owned chinnies since I was 13. Maybe I can help ya with something?

We have a chinchilla and everytime I sit beside her she starts whistling. She doesn't do it with anyone else. Is this normal?

Is it a whistle or more of a bark? My chinnies use to make this barking sound all the time. Never quite figured out what it meant, lol! It might just be a special noise she makes when she's around you.

It's wierd little sound. It could be a long bark. My husband says its because I spoil her and she is wanting treats. I've told him that is okay as long as it doesn't mean she wants to mate. I'm fine with spoilt.

It might be, I would call a vet that works with exotic pets just to make sure and be on the safe side :0)

No problem. Good luck. Hey will you leave an update when you talk to the vet? I'm curious now as to what the noise really means :0)

The only place Ive seen Chinchillas is in books.

Are they anything like a guinea pig? Can you teach them things easily?

Hiddy, they are nothing like a guinea pig. With chinchillas they are heavy chewers, so nothing can be placed near their cage that can be chewed. They also need a much larger cage, preferably one with multi levels. They love to jump. They are awsome pets (harder than hell to catch if they ever get out in your house though, they can jump amazingly high) and they don't really stink. One cool thing about them is the dust baths they need. They use a silica dust (you put it in a dish) and they roll in it to keep their fur from becoming coarse.

They look really cute. Can you train them to come to you?
Can they become affectionate?....Like a bird?

I know Guinea Pigs just kind of get used to you. They dont so much give affection as they just get used to being handled..
are Chinchillas like that?

Im sure you could. I have never tried. I know they will come for food rewards. Yes they can become affectionate. I have noticed that they do have people preferences. The ones I have been around DO NOT like people who smoke. And yeah they are really cute and they have the softest fur. I guess thats why people make coats out of them...

I went out and bought a "littlest pet shop" Chinchilla, I liked the look of them so much...lol

Why do you not have them in Austrailia? Are they illegal? Where do you live there, like what's the temp like most of the time? You have to make sure that they don't get too hot with their thick fur.

Yeah I live in Arizona and I had to keep them in a room with cold AC and a fan blowing on them so they don't over heat. They can become affectionate. Moe (my oldest chinnie, I had him from 1999-2005 RIP) and I had our own little noises we would make and he would only come to me. He used to chill on my shoulder like a parrot. It was pretty cool :0)

No, they dont have them here, actually I think Ive only seen 1 in a zoo. A long time ago.

Name: Hiddy | Date: Oct 26th, 2006 11:38 PM
They look like little cartoon characters or something.
The only thing I can think of that even resembles a chinchilla in Australia, is a billby (long snout, big ears) not as furry as chinchilla and a lot bigger. And definately not as cute!

They are native animals, you cant keep them as pets.

I just got a chinchilla about a month ago and he was all fine and loved coming out of his cage running around and being happy. But now he wont come out of his cage hardly and he keeps biting me. It makes me sad because i had wanted a chinchilla for a really long time and now that I have him I want to spend as much money as I can on him and everything!! I dont know what to do though he just keeps biting me :(

Chewy, it sounds like he has gotten scared. Our chin is the best, she will come to you. I have a round puppy kennel that I open in the middle of the living room and we let it loose in there. The little kids sit in there and the chinchilla will run to them and crawl all over them. All the kids like to watch it bathe. My older kids takes it to school a lot and shows the other kids how they act.

I brought a 3 month old chinchilla home and she has sneezed quite a few times and then made some chinchilla noises afterward. The temperature outside is quite warm, I took her from the store directly into the car and then home. Did the different temps maybe give her a cold?
