In Australia, they book you in for the first one at 12 weeks. This ultrasound picks up any abnormalties in the pregnancy etc. - You will get to see the heartbeat flicker on the screen..it will be one of the most beautiful things you will ever see!!

Of course if there is any complications they will put you in earlier ( suchs as cramping or spotting )

All going good on that ultrasound they will book you in again around the 18-20 mark. Thats when you can find out the sex!!

I had my first ultrasound at 7weeks, this was just to confirm how far along I was. I had another one at 13 weeks. And then the BIG one at 20 weeks. This is when the can tell the sex of the baby (if the baby wil let them :)

I had my first at 16 weeks when I found out I was pregnant! I would have one at 12 weeks and then at 20 then 30 then 38 and 40 weeks if I could have a choice! That way you can see it growing regularly and keep up to date on it's health.

What Nicola said is wrong, dont have as many as you can. There are studies at the moment suggesting that ultrasounds can almost be dangerous and distressing on the fetous.

Did you ladies notice extra movement during and after the ultrasounds, and the heart rate a little higher?
There isnt really hardcore medical evidence that it upsets the baby, but its better to be safe then sorry
One at 12 weeks - check for abnormalities
One at 20 weeks - again same thing and to also check the sex if he/she is sitting right :)
and in some cases a later one. Depending on your situation

I had quite a lot of scans like Nicola cause they thought that my baby would be born with one kidney but it turned out ok in the end!

They liked to keep an extra eye on their growth because it was twins and they were sharing the placenta. I've never heard of them being dangerous so I would look into that if I ever have more children. I would love to be able to afford a 4d scan, one of my old biology teachers had one done for her little girl and it's amazing! Think where technology will be in another 15 years. I'd love to come back to live in like 5 million years time-if the world still exists- and see what's happened. Wouldn't you? We went up to Windosr castle the other day for my brothes history project and right outside it is a pizza hut and a macdonalds etc...my mum goes "imagine if Henry the VIII came back and saw what had ahppend to the grounds of his castle" I would love to come back and see where I've lived and stuff. Anwyay I have wandered off topic so will shut up!

I think its routine to have two during a normal pregnancy but if there may be complications you could have many!

In Canada (or atleat in my provence), for a healthy pregnancy you go for one ultrasound at about 18 weeks. Wish it was more tho..like every 2 months so you can visit your little guy/girl!!!
