Hi Sedona, My daughter was born with her injury. It is called a conjenital spinal cord injury, how it happend I will never know. When she was a baby they thought she had Crebral Palsy, that what they dioganosed her with. Later as she got a little older it didnt seem as though CP fit the symptoms she had. The docs were puzzeled, they began testing. One of the test was some kind of electrical thing, I cant remember the name. They placed electrodes on certaint parts of her body such as her finger tips and toes, they would then send a small electrical current through them. If it showed a break in the curren as it went through the spine it would mean spinal damage. Hers showed a break at the C5 region. I was told her beeing born with this kinda injury is rare. My daughter is now almost 21, and has done wonderfull in her life. It saddens me, when I read about people so young having injurys so severe. It is a difficult thing to deal with. I have just learned in the past 2-3 yers about the secondary problems that have to do with this kind of injury. I never had any doc tell me about circulation, pressure sorse, change in body tempatures, sugar levels ect.. I had to learn all of this on my own. It is good to hear that he is doing well copeing with his injury. Is his injury a complete or incomplete? This was another thing I was never told eather!

They say complete. But really does the diagnosis really matter. The whole injury is devastating. He was also told he was incomplete. Is your daughter in a power or manua chair? What does she do? school work? My son is on the state long term care program. They helped by putting in a roll in shower and widen the door and put in a ramp out the front door. I had to sell my two story and move into a house. Does your daughter have problems with pressure sores ?? we have been very careful in preventing these nasty sores. My son has had the experience with pressure sores on the back of his feet while he was in the hosp. Bad bad stuff!!! almost down to the bone .

Hi again, Complete or in complete does make a diffrence. If you are complete you more than likely have lost feeling below the injury site and have no chance of the injury getting any better than it is. Incomplete you have feeling and there can be a chance that the injury will improve, not to say completely. My daughter has full feeling below her injury site, she can feal if her toe get hit or if there is a bug crawling up her leg. She also has bladder and bowel controle. She does have a power wheel chair, she is unable to operate a manual. I have been luckey with presure sores, as of now she has had none. As for what she does she is a verry motavated individual, she has just this past june received her associates in Graphic art & Desighn. She will go on this fall to receive her batchelors. Eventualy she hopes to go out on her own as an independant person, able to financialy suport herself and not have to depend on any one. I know, It is a tuff thing having to watch your child struggle every day just to complete the smallest tasks. However I cant say I know how you feel, my daughter was born with this injury . Your son's was from an accident, there is a diffrence in the emotional sence. My daughter has partial medical paid by the state the other is through my husbands work. I too just purchased another home to accomadate her needs as an adult. The new home is much larger than the other where she can have her own privacy, she has the lower floor my husband and I have the upper floor. We have also hired personal care, to assist in her every day needs. I have been her sole care taker for 20 years, it is now starting to wear on me. It is time I get her on her way to beeing that independant person she needs to be.

Sedona, I know you said his injury was at the C5 C6 site, but what part of the spine was damaged? My daughters damage was at the core of the spine.

Aisling nolin ~ I am truly sorry to hear of your sons accident, but please know that it isn't the the end he will in time adapt and accept his injury.

It has been a while since I posted this topic and much has happened. My daughter did complete her graphic art and design degree, but has decided that it is not what she wants to do with her life. After thinking for some time she has decided she would like to pursue acting. She has plans to move to La County hoping there is a market for a disabled person in the acting field.

As a mum you probably want to coddle him, but mum please don't ! Sure love him and love him a lot, but if he is babied or coddled he will not try to do what he should do to become independent.

It is difficult! I know it is! But keep you're head held high, look toward the future in time all will be brighter.
