I am just trying to get some information on this as my little one may have D.S.
I was wondering if any of you knew if you could still breastfeed a child with down syndrome and if you could birth vaginally or if it had to be via c-section.

Thanks :)

im sure that you can. I would think your doctor would be ablt to tell you for sure. What makes you think your baby has D.S.?

Well, I've just done some research and yes I can still bf, but I haven't looked into the vaginal birth part yet.

The afp was + and our level II u/s today also showed that she was small to date. It could all just be a miscalculation of me being due, but they want to be sure so I won't really "know" until another month or so. I'm just trying to prepare dh and I as much as I can in case we DO have a special needs child :)

And the Dr. situation is a little confusing right now...I was in the middle of switching from a MW/OB office to a MW that supports more natural birth. But now this has come up I will be holding off on switching to my "new" midwife. I also don't know if I am to see the OB at my current MW's office OR if I am supposed to see a "special" Dr. like the one that did my u/s today....

So confusing :) LOL~~~~I have a lot of phone calls to do tomorrow :)

I delivered my Down Syndrome son vaginally. They are just like any other child in terms of delivery.

I also breastfed him, and it was no different than breastfeeding my daughter, who did not have Down Syndrome.

They are so full of love, you will be enchanted, no matter what.

I've heard that sometimes DS babies take a longer time to properly latch on due to low muscle tone. But it can be done. I don't have any personal experience, but my baby is at increased risk for DS and I've been asking around.
