I love feet

Name: concerned parent | Date: Apr 5th, 2011 2:25 PM
I am currently 28 weeks pregnant and my son will be born with a left clubbed foot. They do not know the severity until he is born. We already spoke to a specialist at the Childrens Hospital in Philadephia and the current plan is to start with the weekly casting and stretching and then move to the tendon release and the bar 23 hours a day for several months. I am concerned because I want him to be able to do all the things that my four year old son enjoys doing and I don't want him to be looked at differently when he gets into school. How long will treatment last?

I had really bad clubbed feet when i was born and im only 14 right now. all i can tell you is just get him the things he needs and mostly support. my parents were extremely poor n they asked so many doctors what to do. after multiple doctors one suggested the sheriners and without even waiting we were in there within a couple weeks were i was met with doctor smith who i thank so much. i can deal with the pain but it hurts my mother n father the most seeing me in pain all the time. its mostly because i run around alot but i hae non-stop endless pain. but you and your baby will be fine.

My Daughter was born with club foot and I didn't know it until after she was born. They waited 2 weeks to cast her and it is tough. I think it is tougher on me than on the baby and i was not ready the first time they put the casts on her. She has to go back once a week and they take off the old ones and put new ones on. I have talked to a lot of people and it seems as if this is somewhat common. I have to trust the Doctor and hopefully everything will work out and my little daughter will be walking next summer.

My son Nicholas was born a little over 12 years ago with a club foot. We had no idea that he had it until after I gave birth to him. He had his first surgery At 8 months old but his foot was casted from 5 days to 3 months old and had to be taken off the night before and a new one was put on the next day every week. It was very stressful and nerve wracking but it went fast. Think of it in the way that thank god it is something that can be fixed. He had his second surgery at 8 years old and was casted about once a year after that just to stretch his foot out where the tendon was tight. The yearly casts could be walked on with the blue material shoe. About a year or two ago I took him back to the orthopedic doctor and was told he probably would not need the last surgery that I was told he would need after he was finished growing. His foot is more fragile than the other one and breaks, fractures, and strains easier than a child without club feet but he does play sports, run, and can do anything any other child can do. I know it's upsetting at first but because they are born with it they do not realize that they are different than any other child which is what makes them be able to do anything that all their friends can do. Please try to keep your chin up and like you said before it could be much worse! If you need or want to speak to me about this in more depth you can E-Mail me at [email protected]. I will answer any questions for you that I can. Also after reading some of the other replies I wanted to add that my son didn't have to wear corrective shoes or the bar and even though his left foot is a size and a half smaller he just adjusted to wearing the same size shoes on both feet. The only store that I know of that will sell you the same shoe in two different sizes is Nordstroms department store which is in most malls. All the other shoe stores made me buy two pairs in two different sizes when he was younger. I don't know where you live but I live in Staten Island, NY so I originally took my son to New York City until I found out that the pediatric orthopedic doctors in Staten Island were more advanced in club foot procedures and surgeries so just make sure you do a lot of research before you go to any doctor.

I was born in 1978 with sever clubbed feet (both feet). When I was born I was put in casts, which I kicked off a few times, and have a car from where one cast was cut off and they hit my skin... After that I had to sleep with a brace that connected both feet and pushed them out, fom there I had corrective shoes. When I started school my shoes were black and white saddle oxfords, not bad for the mid 80s, but hard on the bottom and not real comfortable. In 3rd grade I was allowed my first ever pair of tennis shoes and it was great. I am now 33 years old and I remember walking the halls of the doctors office, having my foot traced, going to the doctor a lot. But I can walk, run, anything I want. My feet are very small (I can wear a 3 in kids...lol) and I don't have much of an ankle, but walking has never been a problem. I am a firm believer that surgery is the wrong approach to this problem and highly suggest you ask doctors about how I was treated instead, anyone I have ever talks to who had surgery has been faced with problems, braces for life, or never able to walk. If you wanna talk, message me. [email protected]

Hi my daughter was born with bilateral club feet and now at 7 yrs old her feet look and function perfectly! Her first casts were put on at 10 days old. She had to go to the hospital once a week for cast changes until about 3 months old. Then she had a surgery where they cut her Achilles tendon and then she was in casts again for maybe 3 to 4 weeks (I don't remember). Then she wore an abductor bar between her shoes full time for about 2 -3 mos. Then only when she slept until her 3rd birthday. Now they recommend until age 5 but the doc gave ok since her feet looked so good. Any way she hasn't had any treatment on her feet since and everything looks great. She is been in dance and gymnastics. The only effect her doc said is a little less flexibility then a normal foot but there is really nothing she won't be able to do. I have always bought her regular shoes but do invest in nice tennis for her with good ankle support. I think my main advice to new parents is to be religious about keeping the abductor bar and shoes on! I think this is why we had a good out come. I only had them off for an hour a day for the first couple of mos for bathes or quick trip to the store. Hope this helps. My daughter is beautiful and gifted and has even skipped a grade. We rarely even think of club feet now only at her annual checkups which now will be only every other yr.

My reply goes to "Dreams" -- my daughter was diagnosed with bilateral club feet at week 21 in pregnancy. She is now 5 months old and has gone through alot. She spent the first 9 weeks of her life getting new casts put on and now wears a brace with special shoes. Trust me, it's not as bad as I imagined. My sweet little girl has adjusted just fine and will soon be learning to crawl and walk like any other kid.

I think that your positive attitude is great and your baby will be perfect no matter what. W are expecting our fifth in November. Baby # five was a total surprise because I had my tubes tied after our fourth son was born. He is almost four and now we are finally having our girl! We found out at my 20 week visit with the Maternal Fetal Specialist that she will be born with severe Bilateral Clubfeet. I was devastated at first, but she will be loved no matter what and she will be considered perfect because God chose us to be her parents and he formed her and knew all of this before we and the doctors ever did. I have faith that we will be able to handle and endure any and all things that are to come after her birth! Good luck and I will be keeping you in my prayers!

I am 30 weeks pregnant and we found out when I was 19 weeks pregnant that our child is going to be born with club feet. There really isn't alot of information out there. I know things could be much worse and still have the possibility of being worse. Club feet have been linked to spina bifida and all of our tests came back negative but it is still so frightening. You have all the images of having a perfect child and then you get news that there is a flaw and it is tuff to here. I have had time to think it through though and I think we were chosen to have this child and that is why us. I have a 4 year old and he was perfectly normal at birth and I never thought to expect differently. I am so excited for this baby boy to be born and I want just five minutes to hold him and cuddle him before they put casts on him. That is really what I think I am going to miss with him is the softness of a baby. Other than that he is going to be here for me to love with casts and all. ↓

This is a great site.. I am 33 years old and have a right clubfoot. For me the down side to this is buying shoes. My sizes are 5 1/2 wide on my right foot and 8 on my lefy. I am the youngest of 4 and my parents would always tell me that the reason why I was the one with the clubfoot is because GOD knew that I would be the one to handle it. It makes me unique. I have had two operations, I use to wear corrective shoes, metal bar between my shoes, casts off and on for the first 4 years of my life. and braces on my legs. But I never let it stop me.... I never treated it as a handicap my parents would let me. I still don't -I work out at the gym and joined a dance class... sure I have arthritis and my foot aches most everyday.. But that is all I know... Best of Luck to everyone on this site. ↑

I have club feet both feet was born this way. My right foot is much worse than the left foot. I my self was a shriners child and had over 14 surgery until I hit about nine years old. I would recommend anyone that you watch the tightness of the cast on your kids because mine was way to tight and I ended up with a hole into my right foot left side. The cool things about club feet though is that you can possibly still walk, I cab even run and enjoy life with minimum problems. I even ride horses. I would recommend save a ton of money because shoes we wear them down all the time. I buy shoes about 3 months. I my self would recommend people look more into getting a hiking boot. The hiking boots seem to last me longer. I also would say some problems you guys might want to look at is getting a sit down job it's extremely painful to stand on my feet for a period of times. I had a job at taco bell and got off work and had to crawl all the way home. If anyone needs someone to talk to my email is [email protected] and I will answer what ever questions you guys might have.
