Hey all,
I am graduating from Clemson University in about 2 months. I am a Special Education major, and just have a huge passion for children with disabilities. anywhere from TMD, EMD, ED, Autism, OHI, MR....anything. I also have a huge passion for sports. I have been a part of the the Special Olympics and I do love it, but it is only seasonal.

I have been thinking about starting a fitness program - as in I would be the personal trainer, for children with disabilities. I know so many children, especially Downs and Autism, are over weight, and it is so difficult for the parents to find the time to exercise the children.

As parents, would you be interested in this? Would you pay and want your child to have this need available to him/her.

Of course I have my Special Education degree, and many years of experience of sports and even coaching. I also have my teacher's license (which ensures all the background checks, finger printing, etc.) and a passion for children. Please let me know if this is something I should pursue. Thank ya'll so much!

I think this is a brilliant idea. I do not thankfully have a child that is overweight with a severe disability but if I did I would pay for this service. After all we do pay for a gym and some pay for a personal trainer. Good Luck

I don't have any special needs children, I tutor one. I know some moms of special needs children and many of them are already spending a large amount of money on baby sitting, special tutoring and more. There are some very low cost programs that exist. Easter seals has one. I know a swimming instructor who works for Easter Seals. They deal with children who are disabled from birth. We had a girl in our Girl Scout troop who had physical disabilities with weak muscles and she was given horse back riding lessons to improve her leg strength. You might check with them to see if they're looking for instructors.
Two women in my small city have special needs children and they started a soccer team and one or two other teams for special needs children. One of the children had Downs Syndrome.
Our city has an autistic program at one of the schools. They also have a basketball program on the weekend.
I don't know that either of these last two programs make money for the adults that run the program.
