My daughter Emilee will be 3 in July. She doesn't talk at all. No words. She just makes noises. I currently started her in Speech Therapy, but don't really see any improvement yet. They are trying to teach her different signs to communicate with us. It is very frustrating. Not only for us, but for her. She becomes very upset and throws a tantrum if we don't understand what she wants. Any advice? I am so worried!!!!

We went thru our County Early Intervention Program. That is who started her with the speech therapy. But they will only help her until she turns 3, which is right around the corner. Not sure what other programs there are out there.

Has your child been referred for testing for Autism Spectrum Disorder? Autism is a communication processing disorder and it is worth looking into ~ GOOD LUCK!

I know I'm a little late on this forum, however as a speech-language pathologist, I must advise you that should always consult a speech-language pathologist when your child is not talking by 2 years. normal ranges are first words like momma, dadda, juice, cookie are expected at 12-15 months. as the child gets older, he/she should start putting two words together. By 24 months, the child should be putting together 2 and 3 word phrases. Some doctors dismiss the lack of communication to "they'll get it eventually". My recommendation is not to wait. Critical learning of language takes place in these early years. Most states have a program in place called Early Steps. This is a FREE or minimal charge service for any child with development delays of any type. In Louisiana the program is under the Dept of Health and Hospitals. It may be different in your state. Your doctor should be able to get you connected to the right place, but whatever you do, don't wait. Language development is paramount for later academic development, especially reading and writing. =

Has your daughter had her hearing tested?? My son did the same. We went to the speech therapist and she suggested that he have his hearing tested. Later to find out that he has a severe to profound hearing loss.

I saw your letter. My son is almost three and he is in infant stimulation, occupational therapy, physical therapy........ This last week he began a group program at an orthopedic clinic in long beach, CA. Oh, my son walks with the aid of a gait trainer. He has no diagnosis as of yet, just global delays. It is extremely frustrating when you have therapists who are not really tapping into his needs. His clinic runs a group program where he works with the therapists as well as is with his peers. I have seen my son within a week use signs that his former therapist couldn't get him to do. I think my son benefits from working in a group situation. Perhaps in your area you may have a similar program. Another thing we are working on is using speech and language cards. Check out this website www.greehousepub.com These cards are utilized to generate language. My son is using them to commuicate. It is frustrating, but I suggest seeking out a program like this. I would be happy to share ideas with you. It is a difficult road, but a rewarding one as well. Now my son in a weeks time is excited to show me the sign for my turn. Wow! My son's tantrums are in the form of pinching and biting. This has decreased within a week in this program. You can email me with questions at [email protected]
