My son has pervasive developmental delays and we have been to many specialist (developmental pediatricians, audiologists etc.) who have ruled out autism and "global developmental delays." However, after 15 monts of much therapy, no one has figured out a strategy that works. At 2 1/2 he cannot speak. Has any one had any luck with methods give a child communication skills or in diagnosing the atypical child?

I am a little concerned with my 11 month old daughter. She is only rolling over once in a while. She is not trying to sit up, crawl, or stand. She won't even put any weight on her legs at all.

Keep looking for different opinions. Someone will come up with something soon. I have faith that heavenly father will help my daughter when the time is right. Don't give up.

my daughter is now 14 years old. we too were given the diagnosis of pdd. i killed myself doing research, going to
therapy after therapy and worrying. i always have been racked with guilt. did i do something to cause this? i have come to
realize, i did not. i now just love my daughter. she is happy
and well adjusted. we treat her as any other child, but with
a little more care. do not kill yourself going to specialist after
specialist. you will get as many diagnosis as doctors you see.
continue speech, but find an occupational therapy that involves
interaction such as hippotherapy. this works on so many skills
and i believe you will be amazed at the results. we were.
our daughter now barrel races and competes with the
"normal" kids and wins. do not be frightened. it is scary i realize, but acceptance will come and then you can learn to
see your child for who they are and not an "atypical" child.

Has anyone discussed PECS (picture exchange communication) with you? My son did not talk for almost 4 years. He has been diagnosed with Developmental Delays. We found a speech therapist and early childhood special ed teacher who really believe in PECS as a tool to help kids learn to communicate no matter what their diagnosis is. Some therapists think that it should only be used with Autistic kids. It is really simple, but it really works. After a year and a half, my son now speaks in sentences and has little difficulty verbalizing his wants and needs - even though he still has a tough time with his speech. He even tries to sing along with the radio! PECS opened up a whole new world for him and cut down on a lot of his frustration. Hope this helps!

My son was thought to have PDD. My son went from a happy 27 month old little boy who was on the charts to overnight no words no responses. I am not sure what happened but this did occur after he recieved some shots. After switching doctors a few times I found a doctor that was willing to try something new. The doctor put my son on a gluten and casein free diet - my son became potty trained in one month. His aggressiveness also went away when we started the diet. We have started chelation therapy and supplements to - my son has come so far he is not healed but I do believe one day he might be. His vocabulary is huge now, his words are still hard to understand sometimes but none the less he is talking. My suggestion to you is find a good DAN doctor that will run test to find out the underling problem.
