Hi my names Emma ive had 4 premmies each one has gotten earlier my last little bot was a 26 weeker born last aug he's nearly one now,but it was one hell of a bumpy ride its like rollercoaster always up and down n it still is if i honest! the next few months are goning to tear your life apart and just wen you think your getting somewhere it'll start all over again. Tj was only 2lb wen he was born adn for the first 3 days he done well he was on minamil vent help but then i wnet to bed on the mon nit(he was born on the sat)and wen i went to visit him on the tues1st thing i must add this was the first nite i had slept through normally id go up 2 times with my ebm and the only way to discribe him is that he looked dead,im crying wen im writing this as its like reliving it all ova but im hoping that helping you will bring me to get ova it. he'd suffered a massive bleed in the night 1st in his right lungs then in his brain,my 3rd son had had a bleed in his brain so i understood bit bout it however his was minamil and neva effected him in anyway, wen i asked the doctor who is now a very close friend which grade of bleed it was he said grade 4 which is the worst you can get then he added if their was a five he'd be in it he also added that this was one of the worst cases he's seen in a very long time and for him to say that well it really mad me relise how sick my little boy really was. ova next few weeks tj couldnt do anythin he jus got sucker n sicker one of the compilacations of a bleed is for the blood to block the passage ways in the head and make the head swell with fluid and tj got it within jus a few days of the bleed his head swelled to a huge size and i was told that if and wen his big enough and strong enough he would need an opporation to fit a perminant shunt in his brain to drain the fluid to his tummy but he was only 2lb and he needed to 4ib 6oz b4 th4 alder hey would even consider doin ti. that felt like a million miles away at the time. but in mean time the fluid get buildin up n up n upto the point where they said they had to tap his head to relive the pressure but its an invasive thing cos their putting a needle through the brain tissue so tteirs a chance of damage but with hte severe bleed we'd already been told their was a chance he's neva come off the vent n if he did that he's neva walk or talk so we had nothing to lose really the doctors were hopoing not to have to tap him so soon bcos once they start doin it it needs done every other day but tj ended up on daily ones u new wen he needed it cos his sats wood drop his o2 wood b up at 100% n he'd b having bradys all time. but their was more to come he ended up getting NEc which is a bowel problem and that made him very very sick and his tummy wnet black,he got ecoli and really nearly died we had him christned that time cos they were having to tap his head and siad they didnt think he'd make it through the procedure.( i was so scared) then their was the fingers he had a canular put inhis hand but they tried bout7-8 times and in end his hand wen black and they feared it would fall off but he ended up losing jus 1 finger but it was his right hand and index finger. then their was the liver problem he had hypobillirubinanemia and was on daily injection for 8 months cos hisliver couldnt work properly due to being so imature. he had his shunt fitted in nov wen he was 3 months old at which point he was on cpap but still kept ending up back on vent every now and then for a rest. i was told he'd wake straight up after opp but he neva infact he was under the general for 5 days bcos this liver couldnt get rid of it quick enough due the disese. that was scary. then he finally managed to come home the week b4 christmas i must add that he's spent more time back in then he has at home he has cronic lung disese so the slightset cough or cold knocks him for sick the longest we've had him home is 22 days to date, his shunt also got infected back in march and he had to have a new one ffitted which we spant month in alder hey for. oh then their was the pnemonia he got in april where he ended up back on a vent for 10 days, our local hospital in blackpool doesnt do vent children or babys you have to go to alde hey or manchester so off we we went for easter to liverpool its like our second home these days and from a develpment point of view he's only 14lb and is still in 0-3 month clothes and the ecoli that he had had to b treated with gentamicin antiboitics and bcos of that he's profoundly deaf in both ears he had aids but their unsure of wot he can understand bcos the brain damage. he cant sit roll or even lift his head off the floor yet.... we see specialist every 2 weeks and he has psysio evert week day bcos his left side he does not use so its goin tight he's like a one sided baby cos he only kicks n moves his right side we've tried to wean him 3-4 times bcos he feeds every other hour st trhe monent cos he needs more than just milk but he has a problem with his throte and is having a clip fitted in his tummy so i can feed him direct into his tummy they've said it might not b for life we jus have to wait n see cos at mo wen you fed him foof he asprastes it into his lungs n ends up on vent cos of infection. infact he only cameout last week cos he was in with a nasty chest infection. they doctors have now said he will neva walk ncos he doesnt have the mussle tone or strenth to support his weihgt it was very sad last week bcos its al becoming real that we dont have a 'normal' baby wot eva normal is these days. anyway thatnks for taking the time to read bout me and tj and i want you to know i feel for u deeply and the reason ive said do much is so u can see the light at the end tj might not b perfect but he's mine and i love so much for his corage for fighting jus to b alive wen he smiles my heart melts . i dont no u but i feel close to you i hope everythins goin ok TODAY i say today cos you can only work on day to day cos you neva no wot tomoro is goin hold for u. im phone number is 07999370819 and ui live in fleetwood nr blackpool [email protected] i hope to hear from you soon Emma p.s keep smiling and remember it doesnt last foreva xxx

HI ALL,
MY NAME IS CHRISTINE AND I HAD A 25 WEEK AND 3 DAYS PREMATURE BEAUTIFUL BABY BOY LAST YEAR 12TH NOVEMBER 05 WEIGHED 825 GRAMMS PRETTY GOOD HEY FOR A 25 WEEKER!. HE WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOY HIS NICK NAMES WERE RAFFY SUPERMAN AND ASTRO BOY!. I GOT TO SPEND 5 LONG HARD MONTHS WITH HIM UNTIL GOD TOOK HIM AWAY THIS YEAR APRIL 12TH 06. HE DIED IN MY HUSBANDS ARMS AND I AGREE WITH THE OTHER STORY I READ, IT WAS SO HARD TO WATCH HIM SLIP AWAY AND FEEL HELPLESS. I MISS HIM SO MUCH TOO HE SUFFERED FOR 2 DAYS WHEN HE WAS DYING I STILL HAVE NITEMARES. I ALSO RECENTLY LOST MY MUM SO WE HAD TWO FUNERALS IN 80 DAYS. YOU NEVER GET OVER IT, ITS LEARNING TO LIVE WITH THE PAIN THATS THE HARDEST TO DO. RAFFAEL WAS MY FIRST CHILD MY SWEET PRECIOUS BABY BOY. MY WATERS BROKE AT 19 WEEKS AND I WAS BED WRITTEN AT HOSPITAL FROM THEN. I MANAGED TO KEEP HIM IN BY RESTING UNTILL 25 WEEKS AND 3 DAYS. THEN THATS WHEN THE ROLLER COASTER BEGAN. I CANT GO INTO DETAIL AS ITS VERY HARD FOR ME. ITS ONLY BEEN JUST OVER 3 MONTHS SINCE WE LOST OUR MOST PRECIOUS GIFT. MY BOY WAS A MIRACLE TO BEGIN WITH AND HE WAS FIGHTING ALL THE WAY UNTIL WE WERE LET DOWN BY SOME OF THE NURSING AND POOR DECISIONS MADE BY HIS DOCTOR/DOCTORS! SOMETHING HAPPENED ONE NITE WHICH THEN LED MY BOY TO GO BACK ON CPAP AFTER 4 WEEKS OFF IT AND BOTTLE FEEDING! WHEN HE WENT BACK ON CPAP HE WAS THEN RUSHED BACK INTO INTENSIVE CARE WHERE HE THEN BECAME WEAKER AND PASSED AWAY 3 WEEKS LATER. THE INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED LED TO MY SONS DEATH AND I CANT GO INTO DETAIL AS ITS TOO PAINFULL. PLEASE TAKE IT FROM ME DO NOT LET THE DOCTORS OR NURSES TELL YOU WHATS BEST FOR YOUR CHILD! YOU BE IN CONTROL OF EVERY SITUATION AND IF YOU DONT WANT TO BATH HIM/HER BECAUSE U FEEL HE/SHE TOO SICK DONT! IF YOU DONT WANT TO BOTTLE FEED BECAUSE YOU JUST DONT WANT TO DONT! IF YOU DONT WANT TO CHANGE YOUR CHILDS NAPPY EVERY 4 HOURS DONT! IF YOU JUST WANT THEM TOO REST WHEN THEY R SLEEPING AND DONT WANT THEM TO BE TOUCHED BY THE NURSES DONT LET THEM TOUCH YOUR CHILD! THEY HAVE ALOT OF GROWING TO DO AND ITS ALL DONE WHEN THEY SLEEP. IF YOUR INSTINCTS TELL U YOUR CHILD IS NOT WELL OR LOOKING LIKE HE/SHE MIGHT NEED A BLOOD TRANSFUSION TELL THEM TO CHECK! WE WERE WITH MY SON 24/7 AND I BEGAN TO UNDERSTAND ALOT OF THINGS AND I STILL REMEMBER HOW CAN I FORGET! I BECAME A NURSE AND I PICKED UP EVERY LITTLE THING THAT WAS WRONG WITH MY CHILD AND I PUT MY FOOT DOWN TO GET TESTS DONE WHEN I FELT SOMETHING WASNT RIGHT WITH HIM. AND BOY WAS I RIGHT EVERY TIME! HAD I NOT SAID ANYTHING I WOULD HAVE LOST HIM AGES AGO. MY ADVICE STAND UP TO WHAT U BELEIVE THATS YOUR CHILD THERE IN THAT ROOM YOU MAKE THE CALLS. AND IF YOU DONT WANT SOME TWIT NURSE WHO DOESNT KNOW WHAT SHES DOING GET RID OF HER/HIM! I HAD GREAT INSTINCTS AND IM VERY SWITCHED ON, I HAD SOME REAL TWITS SORRY TO SAY THAT DIDNT HAVE A CLUE! WITH POSITIONING A CHILD TO MAN HANDLING HIM TOO MUCH DONT LET IT HAPPEN TO YOUR CHILD! MY RAFFAEL IS SADLY MISSED BY HIS FAMILY ESPECIALLY HIS MUM AND DADDY. MY BOY STARTED TO SMILE 4 DAYS BEFORE HE WAS TAKEN. I HAVE HEAPS OF PHOTOS FROM HIS SECOND DAY TILL THE LAST BUT I CANT LOOK AT THEM JUST YET. PEOPLE TALK ABOUT PRAYING AND TRUST IN GOD HE WONT LET YOU DOWN ECT ECT... I PRAYED CRYING MY EYES OUT I PRAYED NITE AND DAY EVEN AT THE HOSPITALS CHAPEL I WROTE IN THAT BOOK EVERYDAY I FELT I WAS THE ONLY 1 WRITING IN THAT BOOK. AND IVE ALWAYS BEEN RELIGIOUS NOW OFCOURSE I QUESTION IT SO I CANT AGREE WITH TRUSTING IN GOD YET. THATS NORMAL TO THINK THIS WAY AS YOU DO WHEN YOU LOOSE A LOVED ONE BUT IM SURE ILL TURN TO HIM AGAIN, THATS ALL I HAVE LEFT NOW. LOOK EVERYONE IM NOT GOING TO LIE LIKE THE DOCS DID WITH US WE WERE TOLD WE WOULD TAKE HIM HOME ON OXYGEN I HAVE HIS ROOM ALL SET UP! ITS A TOUGH JOURNEY AND IF YOUR CHILD MAKES IT HOME U ARE VERY LUCKY AND SPOIL HIM/HER ROTTEN! BUT IT IS VERY HARD AND WE MUST LOOK AT THE SITUATION AND NOT PRETEND MOST BABYS DONT MAKE IT AT THAT GESTATION ESPECIALLY IF YOUR WATERS HAVE BROKEN SOOOOO EARLY. I DONT WANT TO GIVE FALSE HOPE TO PEOPLE LIKE WE HAD. PEOPLE SAYING IT WILL BE ALRIGHT ECT ECT... NO ITS NOT ALRIGHT! YOU HAVE A HUGE FIGHT ON YOUR HANDS AND 1 MINUTE YOU THINK YOUR OUT OF THE WOODS AND THE NEXT THING YOU KNOW HE CATCHES AN INFECTION ECOLI BLOOD TRANSFUSSIONS FLUID IN THE LUNGS AND THE LIST GOES ON..... I REALLY HOPE AND PRAY THAT IF ANYMORE CHILDREN R BORN SO EARLY THAT THEY MAKE IT THROUGH THEY ARE SO SPECIAL. THEY DESERVE A CHANCE IN LIFE. I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE SUCCESS STORYS TO TELL. I DONT KNOW IF I CAN GO THROUGH THIS AGAIN IM VERY HIGH RISK. IT DOESNT MEAN I DONT WANT ANOTHER BABY IM JUST SO SCARED. BURYING A CHILD IS THE WORST THING YOU CAN EVER GO THROUGH, I DONT WANT TO DO IT AGAIN. ILL LEACE IT UP TO FATE. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU AND SOORY IF I WAS SO BLUNT.
TAKE CARE. IF ANY1 WOULD LIKE TO E-MAIL ME TO CHAT IF BEEN THROUGH SAME OR SIMILLAR THING I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU. EVEN IF ITS SOME ONE WHO HAS GONE ON TO HAVE OTHER CHILDREN I WOULD LOVE TO GET SOME HELP WITH HOW YOU COPED WITH YOUR GRIEF AND WHAT YOU DID DIFFERENTLY WITH SECOND PREGNANCY? MY EMAIL: [email protected]
thank you everyone
rest in peace my little angel....RAFFAEL xxoooxoxoxoxoxoxoxooooooooooooooooooo

Hello there,

Reading all this reminds me of my own situation. I had twins at 25 weeks - one of which we lost one day later - the other - born at one pound three (a tiddler) made it, even after a heart op, laser eye surgery and three months ventilation. He is home now and is six months (corrected age). He is just under 11 pounds and although growing slowly is doing so well. We find ourselves trying to cram calories into him, although he only eats what he wants to! Does anyone else have a problem with feeding and weight gain of their prem? Any advice would be great.

Well I thought I would share my story, just to spread some inspiration. I am 16 years old, and my baby is currently in the NICU two hours away from my home town. She was born at 25 weeks and was 2 pounds. I went to the hospital two nights before complaining of pain in my abdomen area and what i thought to be discharge., which later turned out to be my water. Instead of breaking all at once, it just leaked slowly. Seeing how it was my first pregnancy I didnt know what contractions felt like. The doctor sent me home with antibiotics claiming i had a bladder infection. The next two days the pain grew. So i Went up again. They put me on a stress test and it said my contractions werent showing up. So, they were just about to send me home with advice to drink lots and wait until the antibiotics kicked in, when he decided maybe he should check me. Too his shock i was fully dialated and about to give birth. He told me that the baby would not survive, because the hospital did not have an NICU and every unit was closed in all of CANADA, and they were going to try to air bus me to MINOt, in the United STates. They gave me a drug to try to stop my contractions for the time being and thank god it worked. An opening also opened up two hours away so I went by ambulance. I gave birth by cesarean and she was on the ventilator for three weeks. and is now just using oxygen when she bottle feeds and has no other problems. She is now four pounds and she is 7 weeks today. She should be able to come home in around a month and for now i travel every day to see her. She is amazingly beautiful and i feel all your guyses pain and give u all my sympathy.

My daughter had difficulties with her baby, due to a lot of health problem. Her baby girl Jesse Faith was born at 23 weeks. Jesse is up and down.she's a little fighter. She is now 18 days old and still fighting(NICU) for her little life.It is very scary and depressing for my all of us in the family. I will add you baby in my prayer. She has a long road to follow before we could take her home or to hold her.

I had a baby girl at 25 weeks and 5 days and I had my water break at 18 weeks. I spent two months in the hospital with the amniotic fluid staying just under normal and sometimes real low. I carried for eight weeks longer and due to the lungs not getting the fluid she had lungs that were very imature. The Dr.s were hoping to keep her healthy enough for 5 weeks out me but she developed problems from the respirator and she did not make it. This was the only pregnancy that I was able to carry past 12 weeks and I will not be able to have anymore. The babies that I had come across in the NICU that were born at 24 and 25 weeks did well. My daughter had the complication with my water breaking. If she were born without the additional problem of amniotic fluid she would have made it. There are so many great stroies that you hear around you. I was not one of them and I was told from the high risk Dr. that I might think about ending the Pregnancy. I chose not to, and in the end we had to let her go anyway. This has been three weeks ago and I am no handling it well. LIke I said many around me had babies at your sons age and did very well. My story was an exceptiong

my daughter was born at 25 weeks she weighed 1lb 14 Oz. she is a fighter. she was just born 9-3-07 she wasn't due until 12-12-07. yes, this is hard and scary, she has her good and bad days. but after getting over the shock of how tiny she is, now having to deal with the constant worry of how she is doing. seeing her in that incubator is hard. but we are learning to take things one day at a time. we are paying and trying to stay strong..

My baby boy was born at 29 weeks due to growth restriction. He lived for seven days. I held him in my arms while he took his last breath. It has been 9 months since we lost him and we are still struggling. I dont think you ever get over such a great loss. I would like to talk to anyone who has lost a baby.

Hello Damaris sorry to hear about your early birth. I have been there. I have had 2 preemies. both born at 30 wks. I didn't have any complication with my pregnancys. all of a sudden my babies just wanted to be born at 30 wks!! Did this happen with your pregnancy? I hope your baby is growing every day!! My dr said the first baby was just a fluke, so they watched me very well the second time around and even mesured my cervix with an ultrasound a few days before labor pains started!! The ultrasound proved everything looked ok, but then bam! Labor began!! I hope someone has a story like mine, so we can chat. I want to have another baby but not looking forward to having a nother tiny baby. If anyone has a similar story I would like to hear what your dr did for you.

Mahaillasmom, Hi I had two premature births. My first daughter was eight pounds. My second son was born six weeks early I got told the same as you did. They said it was a fluke. My second daughter (third child ) came eight weeks early. The Dr. monitored me every week after the 20th week. My cervical lenth went to 1.5 two days before she was born. They never figured out why I had my two children premature. I went to a speacialist for my fourth pregnancy and she told me that I had a blood clotting problem and put me on lovenox shots two times a day. My son became growth restricted at 19/ 1/2 weeks. I was admitted to John Hopkins when I was 25 weeks pregnant because the problem continued to get worse with his growth. While I was at John Hopkins they retested me for a blood clotting problem and the test came back negative for this problem. I had been on blood thinners for nothing. My son was born On Dec 22 2006 at 29 weeks. HE died seven days later from respitory distress. So if you go to a speacialist be carefull what medicines you take. My biggest regret is that I did not get a second opinion before starting the blood thinners and I do believe that my son would be here if I had only gotten another opinion. John Hopkins told me that they have done alot of research into premature labor and they cannot find the answers for this problem.

I hope your baby is doing well Damaris so as the others. Does anybody found out what triggered labor so early? My sister was in a similar situation her water broke around week 19 in two pregnancies. Any suggestions on the tests she should have done by her doctor? It seem is not due to an incompetent cervix (the sonogram showed it was fine 7 days before it happened the second time) Thanks

I would like to give all of you a little hope. I am so hurt to read about all of the pain you go through. It makes my heart ache.
But some things, for whatever reason, turn out right. Have faith.
My mom gave birth to me 19 years ago. I was born at 29 weeks, weighing 1 pound 15 ounces. I was on a ventilator for 24 hours and had steroid shots for lung development at first, and stayed in the hospital for several months, but God has blessed me so abundantly. I thank him each day for being here. I am doing fine, and I hope to get into nursing school in the next year and become a neonatal nurse because my nurses helped me so much.
Michelle, what you said was so beautiful. I'm blinking back the tears.
Keep your spirits up. I am my mom's wonder baby.
God bless!
Love, H.
