Hi I'm just curious what is cerebral palsy? What causes it? My son is autistic which I am very familar with. Up until my son was born I never gave disabilities much thought. Now I live in a very different world then I'd ever imagined. I like to educate myself on different disabilities and how families cope with them. I am pregnant with my second child and very aware things don't always go as planned.

Cerebral Palsy Definition - Cerebral Palsy A-Z

What is the Definition of Cerebral Palsy? Cerebral palsy is a term used to describe a group of chronic conditions affecting body movements and muscle coordination. It is caused by damage to one or more specific areas of the brain, usually occurring during fetal development, or during infancy. It can also occur before, during or shortly following birth.

"Cerebral" refers to the brain and "Palsy" to a disorder of movement or posture. If someone has cerebral palsy it means that because of an injury to their brain (cerebral) they are not able to use some of the muscles in their body in the normal way (palsy). Children with cerebral palsy may not be able to walk, talk, eat or play in the same ways as most other children.

Cerebral palsy is neither progressive nor communicable. It is also not "curable" in the accepted sense, although education, therapy and applied technology can help persons with cerebral palsy lead productive lives. It is important to know that cerebral palsy is not a disease or illness. It isn't contagious and it doesn't get worse. Children who have cerebral palsy will have it all their lives.

Cerebral palsy is characterized by an inability to fully control motor function, particularly muscle control and coordination. Depending on which areas of the brain have been damaged, one or more of the following may occur:

muscle tightness or spasm

involuntary movement

disturbance in gait and mobility

abnormal sensation and perception

impairment of sight, hearing or speech

seizures

sorry i've been off line for awhile, but yes, thank you it did. For some reason I thought Cerebral Palsy was only caused at birth. Thanks for the info.

CP is a disorder of movement. People with cp either have difficulty producing movement, preventing movement, or controlling movement. CP is caused by a brain injury pre-natal, post or in the first 5 yrs of life. My daughter was born naturally, but breach (what a suprise as she was born on April Fools Day and we had no idea she was backwards). Due to this traumatic birth she did not breath for quite some time and had to be intubated. Because she had such a lack of O2 to the brain tissue in the brain died. As a result she was diagnoses with spastic diplegic CP. She has very little muscle tone. She is also unable to swallow and must be tube fed because her involuntary muscles don't allow her to put food into her stomach...it goes into her lungs instead. She is unable to sit, crawl or put weight on her legs at 9mo. She has had 4 surgeries to date and we are going for numbers 5 and 6 within the next 3 mo. My daughters CP is moderate to sever which means it could affect her ability to talk, walk, and even her mental capacity... it is difficult to tell as her brain is still developing and the full extent of her brain injury is not yet clear. Although CP itself is not fatal the effects of it can be. For example my daughters weak muscle tone affects the involuntary muscles of breathing as well and she often has blue spells and difficulty breathing she also battles pneumonia (3 serious bouts so far). Hope this gives you an idea but CP cases vary ours is on one end of the spectrum. Those with mild CP often go unnoticed as having a disability.

cerebral palsy is a brain injury before, during or soon after birth. It can cause physical and mental damage depending on where the injury. My daugher had an in utero stroke (before birth) on the left side of her brain in her speach center. She has a weakness in her right side of her body and little speach abilities. Since the brain of a child recovers faster then that of an adults, each child with cp can be very different

Cerebral Palsy means lack of motor abilities from the brain, meaning the brain is not able to tell the muscles to move the way they should. The main cause of CP is a lack of oxygen to the brain leading to brain damage. It's very tough to deal with but like most disabilities we must all remember that our children have chosen us for reason. :)

Cerebral Palsy or CP is a disorder of the muscles. Some suffer from very low muscle tone while others suffer from very extreme muscle tone. In low muscle tone it makes the individual have a hard time trying to get those muscles to support them. For example, my son has CP with low muscle tone in his trunk and can't sit up. He also has extreme muscle tone in his arms and legs making it hard to relax his muscles and use his arms and legs because all they want to do is extend. I am new to this diagnosis but NEEEEDDD to talk about it. If you would like to talk you can email me at [email protected]
