I have a 6 year old boy with ADHD. He seems to be very bright but is failing in school and just "can't get it." He has tried adderral, metadate, concerta and is now on clonidine.I am very saddened by the fact that he is now a human guinea pig w/ no results or improvement. Any ADVICE?

My son is 7 and also had problems with school. He is one of the smartest kids in the class however his impulsiveness, hyperactiveness, and lack of control caused a lot of problems on the playground and in class. He was so hyper that you would never know how smart he is. I started giving him tenex (guafacine) about 2 months ago and he is doing much better. The good thing about this med is it doesn't have all of the ugly side effects that all the other adhd meds do. The only side effect is drowsiness which can be controlled by how much you give him. I give it to my son before school and before bed. He does so much better during his school day ( he isn't as hyper and out of control) and he sleeps better at night (he used to be up until at least 1o'clock in the morning! The other side effect is dry mouth, so I make sure he constantly is drinking water! Tenex is a high blood pressure med that started being used as adhd med about 10 years ago. maybe you should ask your doc about it because it has helped my son! He still has problems with following directions and completing tasks, but those are the least of my worries. And with support from both myself and his teacher, we can work on that. But at least he isn't so disruptive and hyper!

My son has o.d.d. and it is very hard to deal with him on a daily basis. He makes mornings horrible and he fights me on getting dressed, eating breakfast and getting ready for school. He has been on so many different medications it drives me nuts and I feel like none of them have worked. For some reason school is not a huge issue he does really well at school I don't know if it is because it is a very structured setting or what but most of the problem is at home. He is very aggressive, very argumentative, hates the word no and will make life miserable if he is told no, which he is told when he can't have something he wants. He has thrown things, hit his sister and I and had full blown tantrums which make everyone crazy.
I know how you feel and it is very frustrating when you feel like you are at your witts end and nothing is working.

Laurie, hi I have a 5 yr old that was diagnosed with ADHD. I keep saying that I refuse to put him on medication. I am looking into a natural remedy called FOCUS and also BECALM. I haven't tried it yet but I am looking into it. Maybe you can look into it also. I do give me son a fish oil pill every morning. it seems to help a little. I also have tried to cut sugar, yellow and red dyes in his diet as well. Good luck and let me know if you find something natural that I dont know about.

I am sorry that the meds aren't helping laurie. Have they tried mixtures of meds and /or raising doses? How much has his issues been looked at? Just by a doctor or mental health ppl also? My son is turning 6 this week and was on adderall for a short time...not a good experience. Now, even though my husband dosnt totally approve, he's on 5 mg. of ritalin 3x daily and 1/2 of 0.1 mg of clonidine 3x daily. It is like a miracle. When he's not on them he's a holy terror who makes me want to loose my sanity. On it, he's like a normal little boy. My only issue has been getting an even cut of the clonidine, i usually end up with one small half and one larger half, so i save the small half for his morning dose and the bigger half for after school. He has been diagnosed (and it is agreed among several of his caregivers) with ADHD and ODD...I also have him in play therapy and occupational therapy and a skills class for kids like him. The therapies are making very slow progress but it's progress none the less. I would love to hear back as no one has answered me to date on other threads. Good luck!
