I am a 12 year old boy who has ADD,ODD,ADHD,and a mild case of OCD. I am on medicine and it works pretty good. you have to experiment with different medicine. I was on this one medicine and it made me suacidle. Even though im on medicine I still fell like an out cast even though alot of people like me . some times it seems hope less. like theres no poit to live. if your kid gets like that the best thing 4 him might be to let him deal with it himself. it works 4 me.

Wow- I just found this site. I have read your posts. Feeling like an abused woman - yes. Feeling like a bad parent - yes. Fearing all phone calls from the school - yes. Wonderful bright 6.5 yr old son - yes. Evil and beyond reasonable a lot - yes. Sweet and loving and compassionate on the other side - yes. School system thinks he is bi-polar, adhd, depressed and on and on - yes. Feeling like I have zero or less control over him - yes. Have virtually taken away all of his toys at various times - yes. Seeing a therapist - yes.

If I would have started researching this years ago, perhaps I wouldn't feel so helpless today. I kept waiting for him to outgrow his tantrums and obnoxious language and actions. Obsesses about genitals and tractors. OK, that is a guy thing primarily, but the rage and increasing violence...I have bruises all over my arms, scabs from his biting and clawing, and a house that looks like it should be condemned as the result of an internal tornado.

And mostly...I want my baby back and I want to help him.

My son is 9 and was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 5 he has been on ritalin la 30 for about 2 yrs now and it is working great. We tried other meds but they didn't work.. Now his father and I have joint custody with him being the primary and his father isn't giving him his meds and he isn't sending any when i have him.. I"m at my wits end with all this i'm not sure what to do or how to deal with it. when my son has his medication he acts like a normal 9 yr old (playing video games, watching t.v., ect.) without meds is a holy terror . I also have a 8 yr old daughter whom i have full custody of and it seems that when he is arround her she has to act out because i am constantly paying attention to my son. I don't know what to do...Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi evette,
My name is Brandy and I have a seven and fifteen year old with ADHD and ODD. It is a hard struggle especially with my seven year old. He was on concerta which worked well for him, then the doctor changed it to adderall. He was also on chlonodine but it was too much for him which caused an overdose of his medication but he is also on trazadone which helps him sleep at night, I understand what you are going through as well, doing it by yourself without a lot of help from husbands. I also live in michigan. I feel that the doctors just want to drug them up instead of getting to the bottom of the behaviors. they seem to think that medication will just cure their behaviors but it is not tha simple. I wish there were more doctors out their to help with these disorders instead of drugging them up.

my son is now 13, he was diagnosed about three years ago by dr. add and odd. he has been on different meds , i've went throught the parenting classes, i've tryied the rewards chart. nothing seems to work. he was in a regular school they didn't know how to deal with his behavior, so they kept kicking him out. three years ago i got him placed in a special needs school. my son is getting violent with his teachers. only i think because they are in his face when he his a problem. with odd childern you are suppost to give them a little space to calm themself down, but with the teachers in his face, he will get violent. one thing i have learned never think it's your falut as a parent, we did nothing wrong. my son is on probation for doing something a so called friend told him to do. because of the violent behavior i got to to the worst thing a parent could do or go throug. the violent behavior at school is a probation violation, so i got to watch my 13 year old child be schacled (hancuffed) and sent to detention. with the understanding that when he gets out if he messes up again, he will be going right back. so i have to try to deal with the fact i might be lossing my son. he's odd do you really think he isn't going to get mad about something. his probation officer tells me he can contol it. something i told he is my son does have a medical condition, but because you can't see it like downs kids or some other chariteristic, they don't think anything is wrong, they just think he's doing it because he isn't getting his way. any advice

Wow, reading all these sound just like me! Especially the one where she said he never grew out of his terrible twos!! That is so identical to my feelings about my son. It was like the day he turned two his whole personality changed and so I waited through it, and then three, and then four...by four and a half... I knew something wasn't right! He's soooo smart and yet has so many issues. Recently he was finally diagnosed with ADHD and ODD and he has some OCD like traits because of his intelligence. He also met most of the asperger symptoms but was lacking in one area that made it not a total diagnosis. I would not recommend Adderall...it was not a good choice for my son at all. Right now he's on ritalin 5 mg. three times a day and clonidine three times a day. He is starting to be like a normal kid his age...just a smart one. After the years of struggle...it's like a miracle and I finally have some hope back! I do have a home mediator coming out once a week, he's also in occupational therapy and play therapy...but so far i'm not seeing much progress with those due to the fact that as soon as we get there, he shuts down and won't talk to ANY of them. It's so frustrating but now we're working on a plan on figuring out why he is shutting down there when all anyone is trying to do is to help him. But to those of you frustrated...feeling like bad parents....there is hope and we are NOT! Some people have NO idea what we deal with on a daily basis emotionally and mentally. It's exhausting, but we have to keep pushing on, for these incredible little humans who we would die for. They can't help themselves, we have to help them. Alrighty, I shall return!

BTW for all you parents out there thinking drs. are trying to drug up kids, if they HAVE been diagnosed with ADHD and/or ODD ...the fact and science of the matter is is that their brain chemicals aren't doing what other peoples do...the only way to help those brain chemicals and synapses fire like they are supposed to is an outside chemical intervention(medication)....so just go with it. It's like depression or anxiety attacks...people who have a depressive disorder, or anxiety disorder, without medication, the depression comes and goes as it pleases with no control by the human. As do anxiety attacks. Medication, helps those little dudes in the head fire like they are supposed...it's a fact of life. They cannot change their behavoirs or control themselves if their brain isn't firing the right "cylinders" at the right times!! But therapy is a good compliment to medicine. BECAUSE once their brains can function at a normal speed, they will be able to easier absorb the skills the therapy is trying to teach....

they don't grow out of it. My ex was adhd as a child, and still is...same goes for my husband...their behavior and abilitie and things they do with their energy changes...they don't grow out of...and if they do it's pretty rare.

We think my 4 yr old son may have ODD. They haven't given us any thoughts on medicine yet- he just started therapy. I'm at my wits end- he doesn't listen and everyday at preschool he ends up throwing tantrums or screaming in anger when things don't go his way. I'm 5 months pregnant and it's really stressing me out!

I am sitting here in tears! i dont know where to turn anymore. I feel some what relieved that you guys know exactly what im dealing with, with having a 6 yr old boy dealing with adhd but more so odd. But at the same time im so sadned that there are so many precious children struggling with this hell!!! My son has just started Ritilin 5mg, which helps him for about 2 hours at school then i believe it makes him worse for the rest of day. Due to being 10 weeks early only weighing 2 lb he is still so tiny and it scares the hell out of me that this drug has already supressed his appetite, and stoping him falling asleep. apparantly premature birth or low birth weight is a huge contributing factor in these disorders. I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!!! your damed if you do your damed if you dont. I justfeel so much pain for my boy, he always gets so frustrated with himself he says mummy whats wrong with me i want to be good. It just breaks me. my husband and i are on brink of divorse as he is step dad strugling bad. anyone have any suggestions please??/

Im back, Well thanks to this web page and the little underlined "adhd? dont read this add" icon just shocked the fxxk out of me and any one questioning Ritilin like i was 30 mins ago will no longer have to worry because my son's last tablet was today. I am deeply shocked and horrified about what i have just read and heard. I cant believe this world could give our children a drug which is on the same classification by law as cocaine and that there have been so many kids die from heart failue due to periods of use from Ritilin and that laws have enabled them to cover this up! VERY INFORMATIVE MUST READ ALL RITILIN USERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not a parent,, however these types of disorders are close to my heart. Through reading all of your posts, I have not seen anyone mention Chiropractic. Any intereference in the nervous system can cause these types of symptoms, especially in the area of C1 at the top of the spine. Chiropractors have had a lot of success with ADD, ADHD, autism, and other disorders of this nature. It is another alternative that you might consider before putting your children on drugs, because their little livers have to deal with every drug that is put into their systems.

I have a 13 year old boy on 36 mg of Concerta. Things improved slightly, but we found when it wore off in the evening, he became angry and depressed more. We increased to 54 mg but then he became very aggitated and then had tics and was very defiant. I put him back on 36 mg and he seems a bit better. Has anyone had this problem of behaviour once meds wear off?
