It's a long story but a girl my boyfriend's family knows wanted nothing to do with her baby when he was born. Her mom and sister were trying to get custody of him but were told that they have to do a few things that they probably aren't willing to in order to get custody of him. The mother of the girl called yesterday and asked if we were still interested in adopting him because she is now thinking about it again because she doesn't want to lose him to the system and if he went to us she would still have the chance of seeing him.

Long story short, I'm wondering if anybody knows how private adoption works in CA? I've never dealt with any of this...Thank you for your time and info in advance!

first find a local lawyer to do the paperwork and you will need a homestudy. private adoption is not that difficult but the legal paperwork is not for the "average" person. If she is willing to give you the child then go for a temporary guardianship with the intent to adopt.

I agree find an attorney.
I am almost positive that you do not have to do your homestudy in CA until you have placement. You can wait until after consents are done and then do your homestudy before finalization.
