Campbell Co., VA - There’s an investigation into a woman claiming to sell babies online. Campbell County investigators believe she's made tens of thousands of dollars in the Internet scam. And they believe there may be hundreds of victims out there from at least 30 different states.
Investigators say the woman has gone on Internet adoption websites claiming to have access to babies through a local midwife. Cops say she'd charge couples an application fee of $200 and often times never get back to them.
They also have some information that this woman did facilitate at least one illegal adoption so far. They believe the woman has been working out of her mobile home in the county for three years.
Police haven't released her name, but goes under the screen name [email protected]. She's also been known to spend time in chat groups at Yahoo and AOL.
Inv. Robert New, Campbell County Sheriff's Office - "I think what she has done is try to exploit parents who are having trouble having children and are looking to adopt kids and give them a loving home and she preyed upon those feelings to exploit it and take money from them."
So far police have identified about 25 victims, but they believe there's a lot more of them out there. If you or someone you know has been contacted by someone with that screen name again it's [email protected], call Campbell County investigators at 434-332-9514.
